View Full Version : 600r ATC steering cone woes

To make a long story short I decided to turn my 85 XL600r into a three wheeler by combining it with my 85 200x. All was going well until this morning when I went to switch out front ends. The stems I'm fairly confident can be pressed out of the cones and swapped but since i want to use the longer and wider 600 front shocks I need a custom steering cone. Does anyone know of a reliable place that can do this? Basicaly what I desire is to have the 200x's width and the 600r's shock diameter. On top of that I will need a stop that is compatible with the 600r's frame. I am unable to get a drawing done for these at the moment but I am looking for the resources to do so. Any input would be appreciated.

looks close to a 85 86 250r fork size I'd check that out. some people may tell you that you can't press the stem out of 250r lowers, but you can and it will pretty much max out a 10 ton press. had to do that to build my 450 front end.
what's your plan for the brake and hub?

Thanks, I will have to take a look at that. This is all pretty much in the planning stages right now, all I have really done is put a 200x swinger on the bike itself and tore both sets of forks apart. The rest is really up in the air. I want to use the bike frame because of the oil being in the frame and I imagine I'll have to extend the swinger. The brake never worked on the x so I haven't even thought that far yet.

What diameter forks are on the XL600?

The 600 forks are 3.8cm (1.5'').

Two things:

First, you're not going to like the geometry of the bike frame. But like me, you'll probably learn to deal with it (it will feel top heavy and reluctant to turn). If possible, try and run your forks with a trailing axle and it will steer much better. This really helped out my 600X with a 350X front end (I just turned the fork around, still haven't gotten around to putting on a front brake).

Second, I put some larger diameter forks on a KX500 I had by boring out the triples. I clamped a piece of metal in the split part to get them solid and a set distance out so I could still install and clamp on the new legs, then bored them out with a Bridgeport mill. The triples turned out to be thinner than I would have liked, but as hard as I rode it it never gave me any problems. Depending on how much meat you have it would be an option. If you really want to go this route and don't have any way to get it done you could send them to me and I can bore them out. I have a 200X still, so I can go and measure my triples to see if I think it would have enough material in them assuming your forks are 38mm (1.496") when I get home. It would be good if you could get a set of calipers and measure the actual diamter (I would prefer in inches to the thousandth, i.e. 1.xxx).

Good luck,
-Jed

I will get on that first thing in the morning. For your 600 what did you use as a swinger? I'm thinking about extending the 200x swinger and using that.

I used the rear of a 350x swingarm and the front part I made all myself put just copied the XR600 setup so I could use the factory shock and stock upper mount. If you do some searching around this sight you should be able to find some pictures of my trike. I never got a chance to look at my triples on my 200x, but I'm back in town now so I should be able to get out and measure them.
