Howdy,
I would like to get a quad. I really like 2 strokes. So I was thinking either a late 80s TRX250r or a Banshee. Im mostly getting a quad so I can have a machine with cheap easy to find parts. At the same time I would like a quad that is known for lasting a long time and being tough. I would not mind paying a little more for parts if I have to replace them less frequently. Being easy to work on is also a big plus. I have not rode a trx250r or a banshee. Can you guys give me any input about what might be a good 2 stroke quad?
Thanks,
Jason

well I have owned and had friends who owned about everything out there. 2 strokes are nice becuase of how simple they are are rebuild, but plan on rebuilding it alot more, especially if you ride hard, and with a shee that means buying twice as many parts being as its a twin. I would look into a trx 250r or even a late model ltr250, friend has one and so far its been a great quad, but if you want something bulletproof, and i know its not a 2 stroke look into a 400 ex, leave it stock and will last you along time, just my 2 cents

I would go for a 250r over a shee...but yea like xman said the 400exs are very reliable

I have owned all 3 banshee is the worst atv I have ever owned. 400ex is nice and fun to ride, I even modded mine pretty good and it was still reliable. As for the trx250r it is awesome, mine is really modded and so far so good. I would not trade it for either of the other quads. I still have a few bugs to work out since I built it from the ground up last winter. I just haven't had time to ride this summer or don't feel like riding, I think a little of both.

yfz450's run very two stroke like, the power delivery, and they are getting cheaper by the minute. 2004's are around 2500 now. that would be my pick.

I plan on buying a four stroke quad too. But want a 2 stroker first. Thanks for the input everyone. Ill be looking for an 88 trx 250r. Thanks.
Also, I worked on my first yamaha motorcycle today. A 2003 yz250. I found thier choice of screws and fasteners to kind of suck. Some screws has no slots at all, just a scored area around the head. Other screws where sooo soft. Way tooo soft. They made me use allen heads a lot for stuff that, on my hondas, is normally a screw. It almost felt like they where trying to make it hard. This made me think about not buying a recent yamaha. Maybe all new stuffs is fiddily. I dont know.

This would also be my choice ... i would go with the bike version then if you wanted to you could convert it :naughty:

I would consider a Honda 250r, or LT250r. Later on, you may want one of the
450's, but I think you would be doing yourself a favor by looking into one of the above.
Cheap to work on, plenty of aftermarket (especially the Honda)- and there are plenty of used parts out there just to keep you on the trail.

i had a few banshees all modded and they lasted fine you just have to know what your doing and keep them tuned in which can be a pain for the average rider...dont buy an 04 yfz they had bad crank balancers i had an 05 which was nice and the 06 and up have a oil port to splash the piston with oil so they are even better

No they don't, I have one. The problem wasn't with the crank in the 04's, it was how it was lubricated. And you will see similar problems through 2008. Guys would buy a strung out 450 and think that with all that performance, they weren't going to have to sacrifice reliability. Think again...
I have yet to rebuild my 04, and I ride the arse off of it. MX, flat track, Nasmoto/Supermoto, you name it. Bought it to race it, and is all that it has ever seen.

it was a problem with the crank balancer and your lucky if yours hasnt destroyed itself yet

It is a lubrication flaw. The wrist pin and rod bearing relied on a splash design for lubrication so it could seize up. That's why you can get the oil upgrade done to upgrade to the '07+. http://www.jtatv.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=OU-100
I actually bought the 04 in my sig for cheap because it had this failure happen. I put an 05 engine in it and sold it, warning the buyer he should get the upgrade done.

I recommend a trx 250r, because I feel the engine is bulletproof for 2strokes. I cant say i have ever heard anyone talk trash about their engines..I have had the atc since march of 03 and have been riding them since 02..plus if you think back to the dark ages(90's that is) and early 2000'S, it was the choice race bike hands down. Not only do i have the trx but also the atc. I have been a member on this website since mar of 03(i lost my first Screenname)and the only common problem for the trx's i have heard of is the frame cracking from all the years of motocross abuse. ...I never see decked out LT 250Rs,that is one bike i wish was popular,as a matter of fact, all the ones i have seen in person have been in junk yards....I wish the Tecate-4 was more popular too... The banshee will be my next toy....I have wanted one for so long....I cant comment on it because i have never owned it. I think the two biggest problems i have heard about the banshee is that is takes half a football field to turn around(bad steering radius) and no bottom end.....If you like really soft and cushy seats....the banshee is for you. I have no where near the seat time on my trx, but since its the exact same engine in the 85 86 ATC, i knew what to expect. I got it in march or april and rode it like 5 or 6 times down the road....I have been restoring it since mid to late april. The counterbalancer was off time and i had to buy a new frame cause the cracks from the engines vibration. Every single motormount was broke. I wanted to personalize it any ways. I bought a 295 big bore kit for it to make things interesting.Anyways.. GET THE TRX:beer

I am actually surprised all these people are recommending those four strokes to you. I love my YFZ450 but 2 strokes are the newest dying trend since 3 wheelers. I would take those comments as if it were year 88 or 89 and some one recommending the new 4 wheelers when i was asking for the one of the best 3 wheelers.Im a 2stroke person and will always be. It is a little upsetting if you ask me.....

with the R+D going into two strokes by companies like Evinrude and KTM, they will come back. i dont remember which company it was, but they created a fuel injected two stroke that had a broader torque curse than a 4 stroke, 2 stroke power, and better emissions and better fuel mileage.

I hate soft screws. but, i'd take allen bolts over screws any day of the week.....screws are too easy to strip.

How about a t4!
He wants something easy to find parts for........
Just buy the greatest sport quad of all time - TRX250R - and be done with it. Then you'll never second guess the purchase. Buy one of these newer quads and you'll pay double or triple what you can get a nice TRX for and still always be wondering 'what if?'
Just go get the TRX.

300rman i think it was the new etec from bombardier. and i hope they do come back! so much simpler and lighter and i say more dependable than the new high performance 4 strokes. when a 4 stroke blows its never simple or cheap...

really now? this has turned into a 2 stroke vs. 4 stroke thread. to me the only trail worthy 2 stroke quad is the trx250r hands down, I mean with the right pipe and the right carb It turns into great woods bike. If you wanted a duner just port it/bore it and you get a great duner what do have to loose? The banshee, lt250r, lt500, and the tecate 4 are all dirt racers stock. I like 4 strokes but I want to drive the quad and not let the quad drive me.

whats your point? i had 2 banshees and they were a blast on trails...and the lt 500 would smoke anything in the woods they have more low end nut than anything out there.
the dude wanted a 2 stroke so people should be reccomending 2 strokes. oh and he said dependable so you can throw yfz's out the window.

LOL, banshees came stock for dirt racing go to any yamaha dealership and they will tell you the same thing. Lt250r had problems, the 500 is a grenade waiting to go off.

who gives a trailprotrailprotrailprotrailpro? dirtbikes come ready for the track and i still drive em on the road and the trails. my banshee will smoke 450's on trails you just have to know how to stay in the powerband.

oh and a banshee is far from set up for a track stock....
