Remember the big bore air cooled models?? This KX420 I just got - what an oddball sized engine - Didn't Honda make a CR450 back then and Suzuki an RM370 or something. I honestly don't even know what year the KX420 is or how long they made it but I thought KAWI made a KX370 and even a KDX450 or something too. What were some of the other odd sized bikes and manufactures of the early 80's?? Oh yeah - does anyone know what years the KX420 was made before the KX500 came out?? Was that Kawi's biggest bore until then?

Check out www.georgiaoffroad.com look under the dirt bike guide on the left hand side. They have an extensive list of many dirt bikes. :-D

Yes!

Add YZ & IT 465 & CR 480R to the list!

The KX500 came out in 83. It was an air-cooled motor until 85. If I remember correctly.

Also thought I'd add an honorable mention for the old KTM 495 (they built these into trikes) and Maico 490. Those old air cooled monster two strokes woud hurt you!

The bigbore craze was started mainly with 4 strokes, but moved into bigger and bigger 2 strokes mostly spurred on by yamaha for awile and maico.

I'v had several of them...

Cr450r...horrible bike

cr480r..classic

rm500(friends)..good bike hard to find

I think alot of the older big bore bikes were made because people wanted more power, you have to remember, the old aircooled models didn't make a ton of horsepower, in fact, something in the 400 cc range would prob make about the same hp roughly as a watercooled 250 motor. Add the extra weight into it, and they weren't scary fast as you would think, although I'm sure they held their own, and had plenty of torque.
