I am starting a 1929 ford pickup. I thought I would share some pics of the start of it. A good friend of mine is in the pics and he is the brains behind the build. We are going to stretch this to a 4 door and using Tall T doors on it.

Man those door are in fantastic shape, usually the hinges are falling off, and have old farm supplies welded in place. LOL. Looks great, so far. Nice shop BTW, real clean lots of room too. Keep me updated, even if you don't update this thread, I would love progress pics. THanks for sharing!!

I will keep it updated for sure. Working on getting the suspension brackets all welded in this week. Gotta start the project of drilling holes into my straight axle.

Wouldnt one desire to build this type of frame on a jig table that is plumb level?

johnny's X
08-19-2009, 10:11 AM
this wont see the road for some time. No need for jig table. lots of measuring and tweeking before the tack weld. Measure 50 times weld once. Been more than a few rods built without use of a table. That 31 in the backround was a scratch build also. Really want to get my hands on a flathead V8 if anyone knows of one.
Maybe next summer you will see this hit the road Russ

I hope it sits about 6" from the road when complete. The object is to make the frame the lowest point on the truck so if I hit bottom it will not do any damage. Next its time to mount the cowl and get the motor mounts welded in and drop in the mock motor. Tack weld the front doors on and start to build the door supports for the rear doors. The rear doors will swing suicide. Gonna try to make the doors lock like a newer truck to i dont have to have a bar inbetween the two doors. Much nicer and cleaner look without that.

What an awesome project, I soooooo wish I could be involved with something like that!!

Mad skills going on there :beer

My only thought was that one frame offset, why so short? There isn't much overlap for strength even with the bars in place transferring the torque??

I'm willing to bet that more gussets will be added, just not in this picture.

My dad still has ALLOT of 30's ford parts and a 56 bird that i know DAM WELL he'll never finish. I so wish he'd hand me the ball...........

I may not have all the funds right now, but the rough build with metal and welding isn't that expensive. It's the performance parts and finish that suk up thousands.

Anyhow, NICE WORK!! I love it!! Wish I could get my hands into it. Trikes are fun but I LOVE to fabricate!!

johnny's X
09-08-2009, 09:11 AM
Way more gussets and cross sections added to this frame. The frame will have an X pattern put into it.

What does your dad have for 30's parts? Does he want to sell?

1996 chevy 1 ton van for donor on the drive train and roof. alot of other little things like the rear heater from the van make a killer heater in a hotrod.

It doesnt take that much money to build a hotrod. A good friend of mine built a 50 chevy and it driving it. 5,000 into it. it has all the goodies and a chopped top. They can be built for a budget and worth twice what you have into it.
I would like this truck to be driving for 10,000 and when its done it shoud be worth something in the high 20's. that math sounds damn nice to me.

well here are some update pics as of this weekend. Doesnt look like much is done but most of Saturday was spent bending the square stock to the shape curve as the doors. We mounted the radiator shell and two of the four doors. Lots of measuring and figuring when building a one of a kind truck. I have searched the net for a four door model a truck and have not found one yet. I hope you guys like it so far

Long, low and the turning radias of a bus. gotta love it. i am so glad to hear that it will have a flat head. i hate it when there is a great old car or truck with a small block chev in it. I know cheap reliable blah blah blah. i built a old 60 horse for a 32 ford truck a couple years ago for a guy. He went right to auto zone and dropped $2000, got every high power part he could, dual deuce intake, headers, race cam, you name it. I am a long ways away but if you can not find a good flatty by you get a hold of me. have you ever thought of useing a lincoln flat head, bigger and tons of torqe. What style flat head did you have in mind, 60,85 or 100.

would be sick with an old perkins 2 stroke diesel stuffed in it just oen of the lil 4 cylinder deals liek used on a few of the jeeps of the early 40's

johnny's X
10-05-2009, 08:48 AM
I dont really know to much about the flat heads. I will like to go with the larger HP. I do have a small block chevy to put into it for the reasons you said. The reliable factor is huge. Break down on the road most shops have the parts to fix. My other thinking is if it does break down I can always tow it home. If the motor is built right it should run fine.

If you do not get to wild with a flat head they are very reilable engines. A good cam, heads, headers, and a good intake, I would not do more than 3 carbs, makes nice power and is still very streetable. You have to remember ford used them in everything for almost 30 years.

the frame will be black and the body will stay just how it is or maybe some flat black.

86trizinger

Flat black is so common.. so I think I would keep it the way it is. Do you know how much it would cost to imitate that rust..

12-01-2009, 09:45 AM
sure do! Chances are it will run just like it is for a year or so. Deadline on this build is july. The Syracuse Nationals are in July and I plan on bringing home a trophy of some sort. 3 cars went last year and two came home with awards. This is the only truck I have seen like this and I dont miss to many national shows. Not sure why I have not seen it, either nobody wants to take the time to build parts or people just know better..haha

adding a few more update pics. Added the bracing on the back of the doors for the tin to go on. Waiting for the rear tin to arrive that has the window spot pressed out for it to sit in. Made the visor for the front. Roof is going on this weekend along with some tin on the back. Might even start the floors

Johnny you might not be up for the idea, but I was talking with a guy on highlifter the other day about his rat rod and he was having seat issues.

The rear bench seat of a scion xb is narrow and mounts to a bar that goes across the car. Cheap and easy seat. You can get leather ones for under 300 last I checked.

I have mini van seats that are going in it. We built the width to be about an inch wider than the seats. Cade if you get a chance measure you seats. You dont see to many mini van seats in leather that are in nice shape. I would like to get leather for sure.

well its been a long time since I have both worked on and posted any pics of my build. With other projects done and out of the way it is time to get rolling on my truck again. Here are some update pics as of this past weekend. The truck box will be started this week. It should give my truck a whole new look. Since the last set of pics the hood is welded on and the sun visor is attached. The rear body panels are welded in and the rear window is in place. Small other things have been done also but these are the major things.
