Easily the pinnacle of quad design. After riding quite a few of 'todays' sports quads I can honestly say I don't think the TRX has yet been surpassed.

Cool didn't know you had a 250R quad. I would love to get one someday but it's hard to justify it to my wife since I barely ride the toys I have now!

Cool didn't know you had a 250R quad.

Yup. The Fooler is in the middle of a rebuild/restoration - needed something fun for our rock infested trails. Plus these kids on the 4poke craptors need a lesson in 'history' .. lol

I can't believe just how much better these 20 plus year old quads feel when compared to something off the showroom floor of today.

Rob

I'm lucky - my wife found this one semi-locally in the classifieds and pointed it out to me. I got it for a song just about because it needed tranny work. I got it home and split the cases, installed a gear and a main shaft and been riding the piss out of it since.

It's a pretty mild build, more suited for trail/woods riding then racing.

The 'normal' mods:
Slight porting (clean and match)
Paul Turner 89TRX 'race' pipe with a Fatboy silencer
38mm Keihin PJ
Vforce 2 reeds and cage
K&N Filter
14/38 sprocket combo
Elka shocks up front
Race cut plastics
Handguards

Again, set up for trails/woods/all around riding.

I love it!

Nice 250 Saul, I agree that they are much better than the sport quads of today. If I had to have a quad I would definitely choose an R over anything.

i agree the TRX250R was the best out there,,, BUT i have spent enough time on the yfz to disagree with the best ever,, and i am talking stock 250r stock yfz 450..... i think the frontend on the yfz is quite a bit crisper in the turns,,

I have to agree the YFZ Is a great quad, but a TRX250R with a 18.5" swinger Is a friggin turning Unit. I have switched from a 86-87 steel swinger to a 88-89 aluminum, and the difference was AMAZING. The other thing I love about the TRX250R Is the low seat height.

That is my next planned mod. I wanna go with an 88-89 length rear swingarm, widen the rear a couple inches and add +2 arms up front.

I love my 86..I just need to ride that damn thing more.

I will agree, I would love to slap a shorter swinger on mine.It just wants to spin out in the turns.Good for hillclimbing though.
So Saul, this is the one you had the cases welded on?

I guess it is holding up well then..Awesome.

WHOAAA..Edit. Just saw the before and afters.
That poor thing was HIT..
Did you starigthen the subframe?

Nice resto for sure.

I actually went ahead and bought another sprocket side case.

WHOAAA..Edit. Just saw the before and afters.

Actually it wasn't. It's straight as a whip - what you're seeing is the rear plastic sitting funky & the tail light bracket was bent while we moved it.. Believe me, this thing was unmolested (until now) I'm the second owner & it was/is in shockingly good shape.

I've had it striped to the bare frame during the rebuild and, again shockingly, no bends, twists, cracks or welds! I figured on a few stress cracks or welding fixes but none are to be found.

Nice resto for sure.

Thank you very much. I'm proud to own a TRX, I've always had great respect for them and the reputation and lasting power of the platform. When I got this one it was neglected and unapreciated - the original owner bought it new and rose it sparingly for a few years - a gear got grenaded during a winter romp chasing snowmobiles on a lake and it sat in that condition for near a decade. The owner finally grew tired of looking at it taking up space and put it in the classifieds and luckily for me I made the call about 20 minutes after he put it on there.

I made the 5 hour trip to his home the next morning, I sung him a song and we loaded it into the back of the Dakota. For the 5 hour ride home I spent 2.5 hours looking forward at the road and 2.5 hours looking in the rearview at the bike in he bed! You couldn't wipe the grin off my face if your tried.

Took me a month to get the gear and main shaft - but - once I got it running it hasn't hardly had a chance to cool down since! I try to log about 2 1/2 hours of riding every day on it. It REALLY does my body, mind and soul real good.

:beer

Anyways .... wth am I at, writing a book?!

Always wanted a TRX, the closest I've ever gotten to seeing one was a roller in some dude's backyard...

Looks sick. Love old-school machines. My dream is to someday be able to build one up, but I guess the chances of that are slimmer every day. Oh well.

Hope you have many more days riding that thing.

i agree the 250r and 250x were awesome handling machines. the 250x in my avatar was raced in the 350 nationals and was built by nacs(engine by TC) its by far the best handling wheeler ive ever drove.

Me too, after seeing some of the vids made with one.

Also, I should have said, some shots from the front during the vid, not the whole thing, those can get annoying after awhile.

I agree the new quads break way to much. That is why hopefully i'm trading my 03Z400 for a 2000 YZ 250 tomorrow. All my buddies have sold or traded their quads for dirtbikes. MY crankcase broke on my Z and the dudes bikes needs a crank. I'm just sick of the quads breaking and costing to much to fix. So i'm going back to 2 strokes. In the spring i plan on buying another Banshee which i wish i never sold or TRX 250r or LT 250r or the mighty Quadzilla.Banshees and LT250R are cheap around here but TRX's and Quadzillas are expensive. Her's a few pics of my old Banshee and my Z400 that's currently broke. This is a common problem with the Z's KFX and DVX's.

I didn't hurt the 'boys' But I've got two daughters here at home regardless.

I did however tweak my ankle - it's fairly swollen. First time on that ramp, nobody to watch go before me to gauge how much speed I needed. Just winged it - came up a lil short obviously. Funny how it works - I made a couple clean passes afterwards when the batteries were dead in the camera.

Hell yeah Mosh! You don't mind jumping on those stock front shocks huh? Good on you bro, good on you.

Question - that looks like a Paul Turner pipe on the red TRX, is it? Cause I have a question for you if so ....

Mosh
11-01-2009, 10:19 AM
Nah The front shocks are in good order..Hell after jumping Trikes 30- feet on my 85 ATC Stock Front forks, the front quad OEM shocks feel like Elka's LOL.

Yes My Red 86 has the 89 TRX PT Midrange race pipe, and my white 86 Has the PT TRX 6 Midrange pipe.

Ha! I hear ya.

Yes My Red 86 has the 89 TRX PT Midrange race pipe, and my white 86 Has the PT TRX 6 Midrange pipe.

Here's my question then - on my PT 89TRX pipe there is a small hole on the top of the headpipe right up close to where the pipe meets the engine flange/mount ... it's for sure put there for a reason and not an 'accident' type hole or rust. It's perfectly round, centered perfectly on the pipe - again, on the narrowest part of the pipe just before it mates to the engine.

Does yours have this hole?

I'm starting to think maybe it's there to hook up an EGT gauge of some type maybe?

Mosh
11-01-2009, 06:10 PM
Nah..Mine dont have that..Must have been for a EGT sensor that someone added on yours..

I will tell you this..

If you want the best Low end trail / woods pipe for the TRX R, get that PT type 6..
Hands down the best low end ,midrange pulling pipe I have ever run..
And I have run the FMF fatty, PT midrgange, FMF gold series, and FMF rev series..
That PT type 6, is the shiznet for low end grunt..
Pulls awesome from idle to about 7000 RPM, then it lays down..But it has stump pulling power in the meat of the powerband..

Saul
11-01-2009, 06:16 PM
Thanks Mosh, I'll look into the type6 - low end is where it's at in my neck of the woods/trails.

Interested in this EGT gauge stuff now. As is, that hole won't hurt will it? Or should I plug it somehow?

Mosh isnt that front plastic on the red 86 from an 88/89? i dont know much about trx's but i thought the 86's had headlights like your white bike only. TRX would definately be my ATV of choice.

so guys just wondering how the trx 250 fourstroke quad .buddy has one needs some work but waiting for a price to see if i want it .and do they have reverse

12-19-2009, 02:08 AM
they made 2 different 4 stroke 250's. utility version with racks and the 250x which is a sport version. Both are good machines. Yes they have a reverse.

87,88,91,and 92.
The only changes were the 91-92 models had stronger trans gears, white and blue plastic and seat, and water collectors in the air intake system.

The 87,88 models were grey and red,and I have seen a white and red one too.

250x's are awesome little quads with massive potential, and run forever.

Here is our old one.We had it for almost 10 years.I had 400ex A arms on it with Banshee front shocks.Made it 2 inches wider in the front.
