We need A LOT more info to give you an accurate answer. What type tires? What size? What machine? What are you going to be using the machine for? Racing? Playing?

I am wondering the same thing ditch mud. I would like to get into ice racing. I have an 81' 300R and 20" cheng shins on alum. rims are going on it. Will probably be a combo of racing/playing. Any suggestions for me John?

I would start with a box of 1000 1" screws.

J/w but Would 3/8" rip out?

Even 1" ones will rip out sometimes but 3/8" will definitely be spitting out regularly on something with some power that is getting slid around. If it were just to put some in something like a Big Red so that you can putter around on the ice then I'd say you'd probably be OK with the small ones. Also, pumping the tire pressure way up while you're studding them helps retain the screws (only the longer ones that penetrate the tire).

Do you put slime or anything in the tires? Silicone on the screws?

shouldnt need 1000 of them, i ran 200 per tire on a quad and you could drop the clutch and damn near flip over backwards!!!

i know here in wisconsin, the ice racers run one screw per lug on the chin shing tires, fronts dont nearly need as man as the rear, pretty much make apattern down the center 3 rows of lugs,
the tires on the back of my 200x were on a piped raptor 660 and it had 1/2'' kold cutters and i think it only ripped out about 8 studs between the two tires,

so il be running ether 1/2s or 3/4s in my 200x, and halfs in the cr125 ( i know they will rip out on the bike but i dont want to replace tubes come spring

Ditch. Get them hooked up. Im going to put together a ride down here at Portage Lakes. Its about 10 minutes from my house. Its a chain of lakes that are completely legal to ride on.......O and did I mention there are 7 bars right on the lakes to ride to and get some beverages.:beer

Max - let me know when you do this. I plan on stuffing some tires for raffas this year - and would love to come hang / ride with you and hit up those 7 establishments.

Ok I have some 18" turff tamers. But I'm thinking that they aren't going to work well because they seem to be of a softer compound. Let me look at what else I got.
What length stud? And Sam what was that glue you used to help retain screws in your tires?

If you get the right tires (Cheng Shin 826's) and 1" studs you don't have to worry about gluing the studs in or anything as long as you put them in the way I mentioned above. I stand by my suggestion to get the box of 1000. The rear tires take a lot of screws if you put one in each knob and you can always use them on your next set. Plus the box of 1000 comes in a nice plastic case that will keep them contained.

I did the set that was on my T3 so I could play on the ice a few years back. I'll be out in the shed tonight and I'll try to remember to take a pic.

826 18" Chens take 320 screws per tire, if you stud each knob. I dipped mine in silicone before screwing in.
Your going to use over 800 screws.

The sheetmetal screws will fly out or wear out in a matter of seconds.

I studed my 18" Fast Trekkers just like John did in his pic and they ran pretty good on the ice. Running a Kenda Front Max on the front of the Tecate and that combo seems to work real good for the Tecate people. 1000 Cold Cutters bought and a few left over for spares if needed. Did mine 2 years ago and not an air leak yet. Did it just like John said and he did me right. :w00t: Probably show up to raffas but with no ride I just cant seem to keep that Tecate running. $8000 paper weight.:(

i ran sheet metal screws last winter on a blaster.. 300 per rear and 126? per front... allll came out with the same nut driver they were put in with.. prob had.. 60? hours on them on the ice, many many road crossings, and even 2 drag races down a pavement road with them in.. and didnt loose a single one

Maybe yours were longer than mine, but on my 110, they came out right away, and lost there cutting edge very fast. I couldn't even imagine them on my 250R, they would be like missiles to the people around me.

One other note. Once I learned why people wear spikes on their shoes for ice fishing, I decided to put sheet metal screws in my boots. (I am a sheet metal worker BTW) They worked great for a while, then in relatively short time, they got flattened out, and became slipperier than boots with no studs in them.

Cold cutters are hardened steel, sheet metal screws are not, and lose their edge extremely fast.

I also recommend not driving on pavement AT ALL WITH THEM AT ANY TIME, you will dull them in the first 10 ft.

i ran 3/4 inch ones in my blaster... not sure who makes them but i bought them at menards.. just says packaged by rcs pkg sheboygan wi i ran #10s in the blaster, the ones i got to fil lspace on the 200x are #8 so there a smaller head, i mainly used them down the middle row of lugs on the front tire just for going straght and the rows of lugs on the side of the middle row are kold cutters, for turning...
