Saw this one on Craigslist. Talked to the guy, he said it needs a new kick start lever and carb cleaned. What do you guys think, he seemed to be pretty soft on the price once I commented on the lack of fenders and silver spray paint.

so all cagivas were converted dirtbikes with engine swaps?

Eric250R
01-09-2010, 11:08 PM
No engine swap, Tricky Dicks replaced the subframe, made there own swingers, tripples, and front hubs while retaining the cagiva forks. Add some 250R and Tecate plastic and there ya go. Cagiva trike. And Damn, wish I had some cash.

Would a guy part it out at that price???? I'm think'n.....not a big money maker.
I'm really not big into the Cagiva scene, but must admit, this is kill'n me to be so close (about 45 mins). I've got the guys phone #, but ....... I'm a little lite on the $ CO-ching rite now! UG! Would love to see someone dive in.

He shared with me that he's from Missouri, as well as were all 65 original Cagiva's he helped build. Can't imagine it finding a better home. It was real nice learning from him. Look'n forward to see'n more pics. I'll shut up. It's his story to tell.

Well, on Saturday my Dad and I drove up to WI, got the Cagiva and drove straight back. Long trip. But it's now in my garage. Still in the back of the truck though. This one has quite a story. It was an early build that we shipped to a guy and his son in WI in '84. He was one of three sponsored racers we had racing for us. The agreement was that they return the trike at the end of the season. Well they refused to return it. The guy ended up being pretty crooked. So my dad went to WI with the title, got the sheriff and went to the guys house. He said Tricky Dick's owed him for evaluating the bike. My dad said that was BS and at that point the sheriff said it was a legal issue. Dad went to a lawyer and he said it would cost 5K up front. Well that was obviously more than the value of the trike. So he came back home empty handed. 25 yrs later it's in my garage. We joked that at least we got it back cheaper than going through with the lawyer.

That is quite a story. It also what makes that trike worth more in sentimantal value than it will ever actually be worth realistically. How did you ever find out it was the same trike? Did you find this out before you went and got it or after you picked it up? Did you guys ever beat the other dude with a ball bat? LOL

I've been waiting for warmer weather to pull everything out to take some pics to post. I now have 3 200cc trikes, 2 parts bikes, 125cc bike and a misc parts.

We didn't know until i got it back home to look up the vin numbers. We had a feeling it was. Two of our three sponsored racers were in WI. The other was Boyd Calvert and he returned his trike.

A beat down never took place but we wanted to.

Also, thanks to another craigslist post on here, I was able to pick this up to use to restore mine...

Too funny....... Boyd Calvert lived in my home town for many years. His folks and siblings still do. He was a big deal back then. '91 & '92 Open Pro Am champ on his Suzuki LT 500 powered TRX 250R. He was featured in the ATV magazines a bunch. Still see him around now and then at the ice races. Pretty good guy!

That's a nice looking WMX. Was it in KY? I'm sure you were able to use quite a few parts.

My Dad always had very nice things to say about Boyd. He's a standup guy. Back in the day he had a very nice '72 SS Chevelle convertible that he was selling for $1800. I was 16 and wanted that car so bad. Boyd was going to trade it for a Tricky Dick's a Cagiva four-wheeler when we got one done. We closed the doors before that was done. My dream was crushed. :)

Thats a crazy story about how you guys ended back up with the bike, what were the chances that 25 years later it'd end up forsale and you guys would be able to go get it? Garage picks are cool as heck, you and dad gonna try rebuild/restore them?

The 3 wheeler was in Ky, the bike was in North Carolina. Haven't even torn into it. Waiting to get a few more things together before I start a restore, and with funds being very limited at the moment, it may be a while before anything happens. But, it has a good home and it will live again.
