So I've seen all kinds of threads about regular firearms and paintball stuff but I would like to see who all is into high powered air rifles. More than just BB guns, these are usually pellet only, single shot type guns. Most commonly break barrel type but sometimes charged system type.

I'm quite new to the scene but have developed an insatiable interest in it. I got my starter gun for Christmas but I intend to upgrade ASAP because I just love the power, accuracy and cheap shooting of these things. My starter is a standard .177 pellet shooter, but I'm looking to add a nice .22 to the mix very soon.

Here's my rig...its a Remington Vantage rated at 1200fps w/lead and 1500fps w/ ballistic rounds (cracks like a .22 due to supersonic delivery!). It carries a 4x32 scope and easily registers a quarter size grouping at 30 yards. It will also easily penetrate 3 soup cans back to back and hit targets out to 100 yards.

Up here in Canada, we're only allowed to have pellet guns that fire under 500 FPS. The most you'll ever find aroung here is 495 FPS. Mine fires 490 FPS, enough to take out those damn squirrels at very close range.

I bought a Crosman Quest 1000x a couple months back. It's been great fun and pretty accurate. I'm happy with the $95 I have into it.

I have a Crossman Phantom. Nice pellet rifle. I put a nice scope on it. Squirrels at 50 yards don't have a chance.

I assume this was before the 500FPS limit.
I do know a guy that bought a pellet gun online a few years ago and it is over 1000FPS, don't know how it got across the boarder.

When I was 12 years old(1980), I hunted rabbits with my .177....it would go clean through them. I have no idea what it's rated for or it's make. I still have it and it works great, but it's in N.S. at my parent's house.

I have a Gamo Wildcat. I think its rated at 1200 FPS with the Gamo Raptor Ammo. It went through one side of a small hibachi grill.

benjamin sheridan .177

And oldy but goody. at 10 pumps it'll go through 1/4 inch plywood at 40 yards...that's cooking pretty good for a little pump gun.

I actually considered that one too Okie. I decided to go with something simper and slightly more powerful for my first one. I still might go back and pick up the beeman and just leave it as a .22.

My sister-in-law's boyfriend picked up a Remington Vantage last week. It's essentially the same gun as mine (Crosman Quest 1000x) but it's putting out an additional 200 fps. Wednesday we went and bought an assortment of pellets to try out. This is what we bought:
1) Crosman lead field points (http://www.pyramydair.com/s/p/Crosman_177_Cal_7_4_Grains_Pointed_250ct/108). I can shoot a quarter-size group at approx. 30 yards with these. The Remington is reasonably accurate with them. Not very loud and probably pretty slow at 7.4 gr.
2) Daisy lead wadcutters. These shoot fairly accurate out of my Crosman. Not as good as the field points above but good enough that I would feel comfortable getting a squirrel at 30 yards 4 out of 5 tries. These shoot as accurate out of the Remington as the field points shoot out of my gun.
3) Gamo Raptor (http://www.pyramydair.com/s/p/Gamo_Raptor_PBA_177_Cal_5_4_Grains_Round_Nose_100c t/399). These things are ridiculous. Coming out of the Remington, they sound like a .22 rifle. They aren't quite as loud out of mine but still loud enough that I would never think about shooting pigeons out of my bedroom window here in town. Not only are they much faster (louder), they are incredibly accurate out of both guns. I shot a nickel-size 5-shot group at 30 yards. The Remington performed the same.
4) Gamo Rocket (http://www.pyramydair.com/s/p/Gamo_Rocket_177_Cal_9_6_Grains_Ballistic_Tip_150ct/423). These are interesting little pellets. They're obviously much slower at 9.6 gr but I imagine they would knock down just about any small game you shoot with them. The BB in the tip separates if you hit something hard enough with it (rib, skull, etc.) and this makes one small projectile and one large projectile to knock around inside of an animal. Accurate out of both guns to probably just over a quarter-sized group at 30 yards.
5) RWS HyperMAX (http://www.pyramydair.com/s/p/RWS_HyperMAX_177_Cal_5_2_Grains_Pointed_100ct/675). These are about as fast and loud as the Raptors. They didn't perform very accurately out of my gun but performed very well out of the Remington. I'm going to give them another try when I have a chance to see if it maybe it was just me.

I'm going to pick and choose some more ammo from Pyramyd Air since what I listed is about all that is available locally. I'd like to try the Crosman SSP (http://www.pyramydair.com/s/p/Crosman_High_Velocity_Super_Sonic_Pellets_177_Cal_ 4_0_Grains_Hollowpoint_Lead_Free_250ct/739) to see how those work, especially since they're only 4 gr. Also on my list are the Crosman Premier hollowpoint (http://www.pyramydair.com/s/p/Crosman_Premier_177_Cal_7_9_Grains_Hollowpoint_500 ct/318), Eun Jin round nose (http://www.pyramydair.com/s/p/Eun_Jin_177_Cal_16_1_Grains_Round_Nose_220ct/284), and Gamo Red Fire (http://www.pyramydair.com/s/p/Gamo_Red_Fire_177_Cal_Pointed_150ct/699).

I have a Crossman bolt action .22 co2, all wood and metal, not sure the model right now, but it is pretty powerful, and well made. It was like $120. Packs a nice punch.
Then I have my trusty Crossman 766, 20th anniversary commemorative edition, all wood and metal, no plastic. That thing is pretty dam accurate for a $35 bb gun back in the day. I can regularly hit a dime at 50ft. I have many kills with that gun. Took out a red squirrel like 200ft away, right in the head. I didn't know what it was, thought it was a bat. I usually don't kill animals though, very rare.
Bunch of hand bb guns too, gammo, crossman, some airsoft guns too.

Interesting thread. I make big bore air rifles. 45 caliber to be exact. gargoyleairgun.com Guys hunt pigs, deer, coyote, even buffalo with them. You can shoot squirrels but if you don't take their head off, it will about turn them inside out. My gun will shoot a 143 grain round ball over 1000 fps. = 330 fpe. The are bullets available up to 405 grain. The standard gun shoots a 225 grain over 400 fpe.

I still have my old crossman 766 that my dad bought back in prolly77-78. We would go shooting down by the train tracks where i grew up as a kid. As i got old enough, he eventually gave it to me and i would practice all the time with that rifle. Eventually the seals failed and it lost nearly all power. I think it was rated at 700fps. Does that sound correct? Where would i purchase a new high powered rifle from these days? Preferably not a piece of China junk either.

Depends on the caliber you want. Most small caliber rifles are made in Asia, some from Korea, some from Taiwan, but many came from China. You won't find an American made gun smaller than a .308 and they are custom built. Check out http://adventuresinairguns.com

benjamin .22 cal i love this little pump gun i chronoed some where around 800 fps when i had a chronograph a long time ago. its a sweet shooting gun it does real well on squirrels, rabbits, and them pesty possums and coons that get in my trash can. i also have a .177 its great too but doesnt have the knock down power as the .22 both are super accurate.

Pyradmyd Air has a lot of guns but unfortunately, lots of Asian guns. For ~$100, they're pretty decent though. I wish I had the money to buy one of topless' guns. Those look like great fun.

cool thread!! i started out as a boy with a daisy single pump bb gun i got for christmas. then came the crossman 10 pump with scope, now I have the holy grail in air rifles, a little pricey for most, but the german made RWS air rifles by Dana are the most precise, stunning air rifles you will ever shoot!! I will try to get some pics up! 1250 fps!! not your typical 12 year olds air rifle!!

I just used some of my tax return money to pick up a new GRT-III trigger, Leapers 3-9x40 scope with red/green illuminated reticule and rangefinding and barrel bipod for mine. Also picked up a Crosman 1377c pistol rated for 600fps as a sidearm...lol

Got a couple .177. Shoot around 1000fps.

I use it to hunt.....in my yard. Rabbits + squirrels = meal. I'm hoping to eat a coyote and skunk this year, but I may need a zip gun for that. (Yes, an odd goal to have)

But I'm more into custom building paintball guns. Not usually 'scenario' or 'real looking' ones either.

Ok, so all my Happy Tax Return goodies finally showed up and have been installed and tested. I gotta say, its like having a whole new gun. The scope and trigger are works of art...period. The trigger has given me a much lighter feel and retained the two-stage action, with incredible adjustability. The scope not only works great (I LOVE the red/green illumination and mil-dot rangefinding features), but it makes my rig look fantastic. My little plinker is now officially a back-yard assassination piece!

The Crosman 1377c 'American Classic' pistol is very fun also. Its quite intimidating to look at, as it is like 13+" long. Its a multiple pump unit, like to common Daisy and Crosman rifles nearly all of us have had or still have. Future plans for this include a simple red dot laser pointer for simplicity sake.

Here are some pics...

I don't know how it works elsewhere but there was no check for the one I bought. They didn't even check my ID.
