I have had a few emails from people I have never heard of as Reply Emails and I never sent one to these people. I have scanned them and all have had viruses.

My question is if I never open a virus email and just delete it, it will never hurt my computer? That is the theory I have been going on.

Well, a virus could only help my computer right now. I don't think there is anything else that could possibly be wrong with it. I have a 10 gb hard drive, 9.97 gb of which is taken up. I have so many programs, its takes a full 6 minutes to load up. All my memory is gone and I would rather buy parts than upgrades for this POS. I like to compare my Gateway to a 1950's Chevy that breathes in exhaust and blows out air and spits oil. A virus would only be the excuse for me to get a new one. I still hope I don't get it tho. :D BTW, I get so much porn in my e-mails that I just delete it all (well, most of it ;) )

If you don't open the email attachment, you won't get a virus. The best thing you guys can do to protect your systems is to switch from a Microsoft-based email (i.e. Outlook Express) to another type (I use Eudora, which can be dowloaded free off the internet). 80+% of viruses are set up to attack through MS-based software. Because Outlook Express is tied in with other MS programs, a virus can go straight to your system files and cause some real damage. If you use Eudora, the virus can't access the files (MOST viruses, that is). It is also imperative that you have a good anti-virus program and make sure that it is set up to check all email attachments. We now return you to your regularly scheduled program...

Luckily Ive just updated my Norton Internet Security program which works excellent. Kook is right, though, most are targeted at your address book in Outlook Express. Im using Outlook, and Norton has intercepted everything. Also, if you are on a cable or DSL service, use a good firewall! Yes, there are all kinds of Firewalls, and Antiviruses you can download free, and you generally get what you pay for. After 6 years as a computer dealer, I sold my business last fall, and I still highly recommend and run Norton Interent Security (not to be confused with Noron Utilities POS) even though I no longer have anything to gain by selling it! It includes both Norton AV, and Firewall. Ive gotten hit with infected emails at least a few hundred times in the last week. "sobig" is a new one which sends crap to everybody on someones address book, and makes it look like its coming from someone else in the same address book, making it hard to trace back to the infected unit. Along what Kook said, get a 3rd party address book program instead of the one in Outlook Express, and you wont spread it, if you do get infected.

I agree 100%!! I have a web based email filter ( Mc Afee ) on my email account that catches most viruses. On my computer I have Nortons firewall and anti virus. What one don't catch the other does. I haven't been infected in a long time. I just get notifications of "Infected" Emails. And I have gotten a shirt load of them. lol
