Wish I could help you more, but I really don't know the difference. You might want to delete this thread and re-post it in Trikesylvania. That would be the right forum for this question. You'll get a lot more responses that way.

The main difference in the 85 and 86 was the brake setup. The 85 type swinger has a large arm or brake brace that attaches to the side of the swingarm, where the 86 just has a small stay that attaches to the carrier or axle etc. My 85 has a 86 setup on it, and as I recall the main parts I had to have was the 86 brake stay, and the caliper arm or mount. Now the caliper itself will bolt right up, but not with the 85 mount. There has been some discussion as to whether 85 and 86 axles etc will interchange and I've heard it both ways, to avoid any issues it would probably be easier to make sure you had the 86 style carrier and axle also. Other than that, you shouldn't have any issues with things like the front pivot area or the shock mount etc that stuff should all be the same.

WRONG ,,,, the 85 swingarm is totally different too,, 85 needs all 85 parts swinger, carrier, brake stay, and caliper mount.. non of these parts will work on a 86,,, the axles will switch,, just need a matching year sprocket for the axle,,,

if you want to convert your 85 to 86 all you can use off your 85 setup is the caliper,,, the rest is all one year stuff

HAHAH well somehow I've got a calfab made for a 86 atc or trx on my 85 atc 250r so it worked for me, now as i said I did change out the axle, carrier, and brake parts, but the shock and all that worked fine. I guess others experiences may have varied.
