View Full Version : Kawasaki Bayou won't idle

My brother-in-law's '92 Bayou 220 won't idle or run. I rebuilt the carb, making sure all passages are clean. The intake boots are crack free. The spark plug is new and gapped properly. The air filter is clean. The float bowl gets plenty of fuel. The mixture screw is backed out just over 1 turn even though it's supposed to be 1.5. Anything over what it's set at and it will run for about 2 seconds. I can get it to idle for about 10 seconds and it shuts off just like someone hit the kill switch. If you hit the throttle before the 10 seconds is up, it shuts off immediately as well. It doesn't even try to gain any RPMs. About the only thing I can think of is an electrical issue and that's not my thing.

Update: valves were adjusted and no change (they weren't that far off). We did notice it'll idle for about 15 seconds if it's left for a little while. Coil maybe? Pulsing coil? I don't have a manual for this thing so I don't know if there's maybe a way to adjust the pulsing coil? It fires off first pull too. I should've mentioned that in the first post.

I think you still have a dirty carb.
Is the decompression cable Hanging up holding the exhaust valve open a hair?? Or the float needle hanging up in the seat Happens from time to time if its the old metal style...they wear and get small groves...hangup closed.

The decompression lever seems to stay closed (no cable, just a lever). I operated it a couple times to make sure it wasn't sticking. The carb is getting plenty of fuel and not too much either. It does have the metal float needle but I took a look at it and it seems to be in good condition. I may try and convince the owner to invest in a $20 carb kit to absolutely eliminate anything as far as fuel goes but I'm pretty convinced it's something electrical since it runs fine and suddenly shuts off with no sputtering.

Try tapping the carb while its running, if it stays running the needle is more then likely hanging up.

The carb has plenty of fuel. I took it off twice while fiddling with it this weekend and the bowl was full both times. A friend of mine suggested there may be a switch on the thumb throttle to kill the bike if the throttle sticks wide open. I never noticed if there was anything like that there but there was definitely nothing electrical like that attached to the carb.
