Hey everybody my name is Eric. I have a 85 BigRed 250 that my late father bought for me when I was 15. I love to ride it but I always wanted it to be faster, The other weekend I was at my uncles helping him clean out his garage and literaly stumbled over a 350x motor out of a 85 and he told me I could have it. I know the 350x is chain drive, but how hard would be to install in my bigred? I just got put on 2nd shift again so I'm up for a project. any input is appreciated. I searched but didn't find any info on the subject, sorry if its already posted somewhere.

This would be the first. It would take quite a bit of fabrication, but anything can be done with a metabo, grinder, and welder.

you would be better off selling that motor to fund go fast goodies for the big red

it would save you a lot of time if you had a chain drive bike to start with. Pick up a 200m roller or something. Switching the big reds rear end to a chain drive would be really hard

I would love to do that, and use the x motor for something else. But it seems to me that I'm runing out of gear not power but I could be wrong i don't know for sure thats just what it feals like to me. I know building the motor would give me more acceleration, but it runs through the gears good already. Would I gain any top speed by building the engine?

Fabrication of a swinger... I kinda did the torque factor to a BR...

The tops speed is hampered by gearing on your BR and is based around the transmission and the final dive located in the rear end of your shaft drive assembly. That along with a rev limiter.

Putting a 350X motor into your big red is going to take a LOT of work for so little gain. Sure you could shoehorn the motor in there but you will have to throw the swingarm and rear axle assembly over your shoulder and start again. Or convert the chain drive 350X to shaft drive. Both of which will cost you big dollars.

Then you'll be left with an overweight, under suspended, abomination that would have cost almost as much as a whole 350X.

And Yes, your right, gearing on the big red is what is holding top speed back. Not power! You could have an 850 big red with that gearing and not go any faster

What about 2x4 fourtrax motor? I know a couple of those conversions done and they seem to move pretty quick compared to the stock 250.

agreed, if you want to go fast buy or build another bike and keep the big red around for what it was made for....work
