Back in 1986 my dad bought this tractor new and ever since it has been used HARD. He never checks the oil..... like NEVER, it was stone dry when I brought it home . Anyway, to say this thing has been abused is an understatement to say the least.

I got right into cleaning the thing up and adding oil...lol but i forgot to get before pics but here is a shot of the rear fenders and deck.

The rest of the tractor looked about the same as the pics above....now it looks like this.

http://i41.tinypic.com/2d8gsuo.jpg

The deck bearings were seized up so bad the blades would not spin. Dad said he was tired of the old deere and he gave it to me for free. It served him well but I can not believe it lasted 24 years and still runs perfect with how he treated it....lol

you cant go wrong with that you will never have to buy a rider again. i just redid a case 444, rebuilt the motor, deck, new hydaulic lines. i have 700 into it i couldnt by a new same quality tractor anywhere, the riders of today are junk just my opinion the case dec is 1/8 steel not some pressed stell junk, give that deere some love and she wont ever let you down

Nice resto! I have a 265 John Deere and I agree with cattle-dog. If I take care of it, won't need a new one again.

Mine also belonged to my Dad. He wrote the purchase price in the owners manuel when he got it...$5,400. That alone makes it worth fixing up!

a lawnmower is like a BR they will take more abuse than you can dish out, however nothing kills a deere like a (Case)Magnum

thanks guys

It's funny a few of you said ''show it some love and it'll never let you down''........ my buddys who all know how my dad is with maintenance said,

now that I filled it with oil (and going to keep it filled) and cleaned it up it will blow up for sure now.....lol

Got to be something special about this JD since it is the ONLY thing dad has not been able to blow up that he has had that long.

I was already cutting grass when he got the JD but when it was delivered dad mowed with it once to try it out and said he will never be seen on it again.
I then mowed with it for 7 years ( and kept the oil changed) till I moved out then my sister took over for a bunch more years but in the end dad ran out of kids so he DID have to use it again...lol

I got a question for you tractor guys.

In the deck pic above, what is the bar with 2 bolts used for? It is right near the center of the deck near the belt tensioner pulley.

It seems to be a stop for the tensioner pulley but I'm not sure.

Nice stuff SWIGIN!!

It's funny, My DAD is so unorganized that I bet he operates at about 50-60% efficiency......

I on the other hand can produce a brass, zinc plated, SS screw in flat head, round head, phillister head and so on in seconds. I can find all my fastners like chicken!

Finding parts I've been hoarding is another story though.................

My JD500C backhoe has been very good to me thus far and it's done PLENTY of work on the track!

I don't know why, but I was half expecting this tractor to be painted blue? It's looking good so far. Can't wait to see it finished. That deck looks like it will take some work though. Is Bruce making the decals for this or can you still get them from JD? Does the engine have an oil filter on it? If so, what did the oil look like when it came out, or has it come out yet? LOL That's a seriously hard core little engine under that hood.

I agree that Ford blue would be better on most things but not the old 316...lol

I am getting the decals that I care about made at work..... I work as a graphics guy so decals are no biggie. Yes the motor has a spin on oil filter, it was OLD looking but it practically fell off with finger pressure. The old oil (or what was left of it) had the look and feel of road tar. I filled it up when I got it home and ran it some to try to loosen that tarish snot. after 2 days I dumped it and it was thick and black....I never seen 2 quarts of oil get that dirty so fast! After I filled it back up and threw on a new filter I ran it for maybe 5 min....the oil is brown!!

This is going to take awhile to clean out.

After 20+ years of big people using this thing the seat was destroyed. It leaned to the left bad and had broken bolts and brackets. I added this leaf spring looking spring to it to act like a helper spring on a truck. It came off my old tractor and really made it feel nice again.

I just found out that they made front end loaders for these tractors. My 316 is basically a 318 without power steering and it only has 1 set of hydraulic lines up front. I also just found out that the 318 has a huge hydraulics cooler that mine don't have.

If I did have a front end bucket I would want the cooler as well. But thanks anyway.

Yeah, after sleeping on it I think they will stay.

Everyone has different tasts, which is cool.

I don't know why I never showed this but back when i first painted this thing I made had a guy at work make me this.

I decided to paint that snow blade I got awhile ago this week end. It was in great shape as far as blades go it was just faded with some scratches from use. I painted it and cleaned up the black hydraulic hitch part which was covered in a thick coat of oil. Once I had the hitch cleaned up I found out why it was nasty....the one line was loose and had a slow drip. So I used some teflon tape on it and cranked it tight and it seems good for now.

http://i45.tinypic.com/2e3mtfn.jpg

http://i50.tinypic.com/2z550ut.jpg

I also had 1 more decal to put on.....a 4 foot long John Deere for the front of the blade. I kept it up high so I hopefully don't screw it up right away...lol

Today I finished up filling my tires with windshield washer fluid to add weight. I used 16 gallons in my tires, at 8.5 pound a gallon thats 136 pounds! I got 12 gallons in the rear and 4 in the front. I filled my tubes so I don't rust my wheels and it even rides smoother like the tires soak up the normal tractor vibrations. I used a 5 gallon bucket with a metal air stem mounted in the bottom and a 5/16'' hose to transfer the fluid to my tires.

I don't need no stink'in wheel wieghts....lol

looks great man, probally got more time in then i do into my Z lol. why did you fill the tires with washer fluid instead of just water?

SWIGIN
05-28-2010, 04:30 AM
Water will freeze in the winter and rust the wheel real bad, but I used tubes.

Back in the day people used calcium chloride in there tires but that stuff was like liquid rust. Now I hear people use some kind of beet by product, beet juice basically. It is 11 pounds a gallon and it is what I hear the JD dealer uses. It is around $4 a gallon, the WW fluid was under $2 and is 8.5 pounds a gallon. Water would be free but is lighter yet and it freezes so thats no good.

I don't know how much time you have into your Z but you would be surprised at how little time I have in this old tractor. One thing I have learned over the years is how to attack a project.

Just an update.

LOADED TIRES ARE SWEET!!

Over memorial day weekend we did a TON of work at the track. I first mowed the track like i normally do but with the tires loaded with washer fluid it never spun mowing the jumps. A few jumps always took a few runs to get up before, not anymore!

Next I hooked up the blade and started pushing branches, logs, bushes, dirt....basicly anything I wanted to push. The 316 does a WAY better job of finishing jumps then the skid loader and it back drags better too. I had the track looking like a super highway o it was so smooth, and not all rutted up from the skid loader.

It works well with the skid loader though. He would push a 15 foot tree over and I'd shove it out of the way. Or He'd build a jump and I'd finish it off as he built the next one. Really works out great and we get more done now. But I did break my blade ALL 3 days.....lol. Nothing huge, just some broken pins and 2 broken hydraulic fittings.

All is fixed now and I can't wait till the track needs worked on again!

That looks great! My grandfather passed away in June, and my grandmother is selling the house and property. I bought his JD 330 from my grandmother. They only made them in 86 and 87, im pretty sure this one is an 86. He took really good care of it. It has 1675 hours on it, but that little Yanmar 3cyl diesel runs like new! The tractor is in excellent shape with the exception of some wear on the foor rests. It has a 50 inch deck, a snowblower attatchment, wheel weights and 4 suitcase weights that can be mounted on the rear hitch for extra weight for snowblowing. My grandmother wanted to give me a deal and sold it to me for $1000. Its a world of difference going from my '71 JD 112 with the 10hp Kohler to that 20hp Diesel!

I missed your post, sorry for your loss.

You got a smoking deal on your 330, and it's great you have it to remind you of your grandfather. The guys on the tractor site I go to are always talking about the 330 like it was made by god...lol They also say those Yanmar motors will run for 4000 hours or more with no problems. My 316 didn't come with anything extra and it was in rough shape but it was free. I hope to get to play in the snow with it this winter! Any pics of the 330? I can't say I've ever seen to many of them. I assume being in the 300 series that it i the same size as my 316?

I used 3/8'' thick angle for the frame of this thing and had some new mini jack hammer bits laying around in my garage so they are my teeth. I angled the teeth 20 degrees forward to help them dig into the ground as I drag this thing with my 316.

I am using my trailer lifter that I posted pics of earlier to mount this to my tractor since I can lift and lower it with that.

Thanks for the condolence.

My dad has a 314, and they seem to be quite similar, if not identical in many ways. But, i havent had them next to each other to really closely compare them

I dont have any pics of it just yet, but next time i get it out, ill have the wifey take a couple pics of it and ill put em up. You would never guess it has nearly 1700 hours on it. Its quite clean, inside and out....

I have a question you may be able to answer. Is the rear wheel bolt pattern the same between my 112 and my 330? My old 112 has the nice V-tread rear tires whereas the 330 has the standard turf tires. I would like to swap them but i dont want the hassle of dismounting and remounting tires that have been on the rims for 25+ years. The tire sizes are exactly the same. If i can swap them, ill get some pics when i do the swap and post em up..

if you want extra rear wheels we have the ones from the 318 my brother stole the parts from. Those older tractors have skinnier and shorter tires so that mite be a issue when your mowing.

Your 330 is the same as my bro's 316 just a diesel engine both have manual steering. the 318 had full hydro steering so it's super easy to steer with a blower on the front.

There was a 330 at the local monthly consignment auction close to here and it went for $400 and was really beat way worse them the one were stripping. So your grandma gave you a good deal.

I have heard that all the older 5 lug wheels are the same bolt pattern. So you are probably good to go.

We had a track work weekend this past weekend and I took the old 316 out to give it a work out. This is the first time I had my chains on it to push dirt and all I can say is WOW! This thing was throwing roost 4 feet high and 10 feet back, some of it hit me on the shoulder kinda hard....lol

I took tons of pics but my old camera only had these 3 pics on the card. Time for a new camera I think.

This is the 6 pack, 3 doubles in a row and this shows how nice the 316 finishes jumps. For the record, I'm basicly standing in the corner before the 6pack.....little run up to it.

These are the other 2 I have, just shows a dirty well used 316 takeing a breather.

After using the 316 at the track this summer/fall to push dirt with the tire chains I decided it was far to bumpy. So bumpy in fact that the hood would unlatch and flop around and ended up with a hair line crack in it. I was going to add a new row of chain between each original row but that would still bounce. I came up with the zig zag idea and it rides GREAT now!

I would say that it cut the bumpy ride down by 75%. I HIGHLY suggest doing this if you hate a bumpy ride with chains.

I do so enjoy reading through this thread.
Whenever I have some more parts come in, you'll have more to do. LOL I've got parts coming from overseas now. I'm not going to let discontinued parts stand in my way. This has gotten personal! LOL

FWIW

My zig zag chains are the GREATEST thing I have done to my 316 so far! It rides so smooth that I forget they are on. And Ithink they might work better too since the tire is always on a chain and not between cross sections.

If you hate a bumpy ride DO THIS TO YOUR CHAINS!

Hey nice job on the restoration. I have a 1953 John Deere 60, and I've been working on it for quite some time. A few gears were all eaten up in the transmission, and there are many more small problems with it.

Looks nice. Them 316,318,400,420,317 were good tractors and will out last any of them made now. You really cant go wrong with one of them. The old attacments are pretty cool they had. The grader blades ad loader.

I painted some spare wheels today for my 316. The tires are VERY dry rotted but I want these for winter and they will have my chains on them all year round. I also made them into poor mans bead locks with the help of 16 sheet metal screws per wheel.

I decided to finally swap my 318 brakes over to the 316. My 316 just has 1 brake pedal and 318s have 2 so now I can lock up each rear tire separate from each other. I'll just post a link to a thread I started on the tractor site...took to long to post all that the first time...lol

i decided to put the original single spool hydraulic system back on the 316 in addition to the duel spool I put on in it's place.

Now I'll have 3 hydraulic levers which means now the deck will not be tied in with the blade. 1 lever for the deck, 1 for raising, lowering, and float for the blade, and 1 for power angle for the blade.

I just need to get some hoses made up and it's done.

Gotta love Old Deeres! New ones arent anything special, but the old ones are un-killable. I got my John Deere 70 out of a scrap heap, it had a "blown motor" A new battery, she fired right up. Didnt come with a deck, so I tool off the deck control levers, swapped some pulleys around, painted it and gave it a pipe! My grandpa has a few old JD lawn tractors. One even has power deck-lift. Awesome machines.

Thanks guys!

I was never a tractor guy even though I used my 316 since it was new. The only reason Dad bought it (according to Mom) was that he was tired of my grand parents telling him to get a JD instead of the several throw away lawn mowers we had. We mowed like 7-8 aces at the time and went through cheap tractors all the time. When Dad gave it to me it was BEAT and just going through it to fix it up got me hooked into JD garden tractors. VERY handy to have around, saves me a ton of work every time I get it out.
