View Full Version : June 12th - Three Wheeler Friendly Harescramble - Dornsife, PA

The Line Mountain 4 Wheelers (link) (http://www.lm4w.org/index.htm) are hosting a harescramble June 12th in Dornsfife, PA. There are events going on there on the 13th as well but the harescramble will be on the 12th so that is the focus of this post. I haven't gotten specific times from the organizers for when tech inspection will begin and end on Friday and when it will resume on Saturday of even when we will be up to race on Saturday but one of the members here (jason85atc250r) has run in several of their events in the past and has been good enough to provide me with info on how it has been run in the past.

Friday Early Evening - Gates Open - Tech Inspection

7am Saturday - Tech Inspection Continues

9am'ish Saturday - ATV/Trike Classes begin their running

11am'ish Saturday - 4x4 Trucks and Buggies run for the rest of the day

Sunday - In the past they have had dirt drags and an obstacle course but you never know for sure.

Here's a quote from Jason in the thread that this all came up in:

you have to definitly be there by 7:00 saturday mourning to do the tech inspection and sign up. They have sign up and tech friday nite also.

Racing the 3 1/2 miler and coal bucket + 7 miler are always saturday. The quads start at 9:00 line mountian time (sometimes a little late). Trucks and buggeis start around 11:00.

we will have about a hour 1/2 to do our 3 laps for the 3 1/2 and the coal bucket is 4 laps in the same time. They are dead engine starts like district harescrambles and the scoring is by bar code stuck on left side of your helmet. You stop quick at the check points and you get zapped like groceries and tack off.

Sunday is just the drag racing sometimes they dont have that and the Short Obstacle course in the afternoon. It's a course at the end of the parking lot.

Link To Original Thread (http://www.3wheelerworld.com/showthread.php?110945-Anyone-Do-GNCC-or-Harescrambles)

Here is some more info from the original thread from Jason:

You do not need registration i never had it on my quads i have only seen a couple of the utilty class quads with it. They want you to have a kill cord for tech inspection.

Also we can all camp at the track there is plenty of room and you can drink after the race just not during if your racing. Just dont be cuasing a big rucis or they mite kick you out just have to keep it to a mild rucis. You can get there Friday nite and camp till sunday for a $20 gate fee and can go as you please with wrist band. Regular gate fee is $10 a day.

For the races the 3 1/2 miler is only 3 laps, Coal bucket is 4 laps , 7 miler is 2 laps. You get a 1 1/2 hours to finish it usaully without problems takes you a hour or a little under.. You have time to do some repairs and still finish.

The three wheeler class is a definite. I have confirmed it with the VP of the club:

Good afternoon John we talked about having three wheelers race and we are all okay with it. Use will have your own class. So please tell all your friends and get a big group the more the better.

Thank you and see ya at the races.
Vice president
Denton Kosmer

I am going to send him an email asking if they have any sort of itinerary available so that we will know for sure when tech opens/closes and what not. Please feel free to copy and paste this wherever. Since they are making a specific class for us I don't want to disappoint them, when the next two races come up in July and September we'll make plans for them as well. If anyone has any questions please post them here and if we don't have the answer I'll try to get it from the club itself.

PLEASE TAKE A FEW MINUTES TO READ ALL THE RULES ON THE CLUB'S SITE. THERE IS CERTAIN CONDUCT THAT WILL NOT BE ALLOWED AND I'D HATE TO SEE ANYONE GET EJECTED FROM THE EVENT FOR SOMETHING DUMB. THEY ARE NOT ONLY GRACIOUSLY ALLOWING US TO PARTICIPATE IN THE EVENT BUT THEY ARE MAKING A SPECIFIC CLASS FOR US WHICH I BELIEVE WILL INCLUDE POSSIBLE PRIZE MONEY AND TROPHIES SO LET'S PUT OUR BEST FOOT FORWARD.

Thanks!

John

Im getting ready to get my x ready. I cant wait to do a harescramble. Hopefully we can get a big turn out. So who's already to race?

I am just about all ready to go. Got to replace header bolts on the 350x and rejet for the new cobra. Will start on that tonight after work. Wanted to say Thanks to John for contacting Line Mountain and getting this all set up for us to participate in this event. It should be a good one. Seems to be a lot of interest already.

I"ll be there with my 85 atc250r and my 250r/400ex contraption

YOU all will want to get kill chords thats one thing they check for. Your sscoring tag goes on the left side of your face shield on your helmet. It sticks on your helmet so just letting you know if you have issues with a stciker on your shiny helmet. LOL You'll get zapped like groceries when you stop at each check point.

The entry fee is $40 and that all goes back into the winnings. Top five get trophies and cash. You have to finish to get the winnings so if we all break down with are old contraptions we get nothing. LOL You have to get a Line mountian membership for $10 or so it's a card you have to show at each race when you sign up. YOu only pay that at the June event and it's good for the other 2 only pay once.

Here are my quad i raced there last year in 2 stroke class and my trike i'll be racing with you all. The last time i raced it there was 1998. They both needed washed before the pics as you can tell so they dont look that beat.

Got the proper 6 ply tires and beadlock wheels coming this week for my 350X. Doing a shakedown run with a bunch of 4x4 quad guys the weekend after next to see how it works. The only thing I'm wondering about is how it will run with the airbox lid on. I never ran it with the lid so I hope it doesn't blow my jetting totally out of the water. I want to run the lid for that water crossing that Jason is talking about.

John

I'll be going around the water crossing taking the wussy route. It's usually up to your fenders

ChrisD
04-25-2010, 01:34 PM
The water issue is a big one for me. I will have to seal up my 85R good and rejet the thing.

A couple questions:

Is the course rockier than Tower City?
Do you need a tether kill switch?

Just trying to figure out what I need to order to get ready.

JohnR.
04-25-2010, 01:39 PM
The rules on the LM4W site say the tether is suggested but Jason says they are more of a requirement. You can go around the river crossing if you need to and depending on how high it is the day of the event I'll cross or go around. In order to win you gotta finish!

John

it's not really a river they just damned up this little tiny stream that trickles dowm the mountian. There also is alot of deep puddles on Interstate 80 (it's what they call this old logging road that really strait that we race on) you will see ways around them some are deep.

REX my quad has a ESR air box elimnator kit and it works okay i just avoid the deep puddles.

Chris D it is really rocky in some sections.

I'm ready. I've basically done what I can do avoid flats so the rest is up to me. Just be warned, I'm going to be in good shape, been hitting the gym at work for an hour every afternoon and cut way down on the beer consumption, only one beer since last weekend. New wheel and tire package is ready! (http://www.3wheelerworld.com/showthread.php?113051-New-Tire-and-Wheel-Porn!!&p=867244#post867244)

i'll be ready tire wise also. Went toget some beadlocks i won on ebay for $100 for my frinds raptor. Got a set of slitly used pair of ITP Holeshot GNCC's 20x10x9's for $40 on yamaha wheels. Mount them up on some gold factory 250r wheels and i'm set.

So anybody want a real nice set of 4x115mm factory Yamaha rims No dents.

Mite steel the beadlocks and RAZR 2s from "rex" they seem to be the most indestrustrable tire i have used. I have the one stock front honda wheel on "rex" smashed so bad from rocks at Line mountian that the tire went flat mid race. The front Razr2 still hold air just the rim is square and leaks over a couple hours.

I'll have extra tires if somebody is going to be there for a pit crew. they let you have pits by the start finish line so you can just pull over change a flat tire and keep going. so somebody needs to bring a buddy or 2 for our Nascar like pit crew.

We need to exchange phone number or something so we can figure out when everybody is showing up so we can camp and pit in the same spot. Also to find each other at the track when we arrive. I have off every friday work 4 10's so i can get there around 5 or 6 o'clock and try and save a spot.

JohnR.
04-30-2010, 10:17 PM
Sounds good. We'll lock stuff in as the date gets closer and people confirm if they're 100% or not. I'm planning on bringing my Turfers as a back up set, its about all I have as far as woods tires, I have plenty of ice tires though.

John

jason85atc250r
04-30-2010, 10:50 PM
i'll have some other tires people can use. JohnR you dont want to use your Turf Tamers out there i dont want to see you ruin them. Every time i seen a guy run them there they got a flat. .

I have extra I razr's and some Holeshot copy's. I've gotten about 20 pairs of wheels and tires from the guy for $20 each wheel and tire. He does not want to bother shipping them due to sizeand does not have much room at his storage unit. He ebay ATV's and dirt and street bikes so just wants them gone to get more space. You could fit 8 cars easy in there and it's packed full of the stuff he buys and parts on ebay that did not sell yet.

IF you have any freinds up there with Yamahe sport quads i have a bunch of rims for them front and rears. I just wanted the tires.

JohnR.
04-30-2010, 11:05 PM
Thanks Jason. I was only planning on using them as a last resort and believe it or not I've been riding the woods with the same pair for close to 15 years and they have been great. You can ask ChrisD about how rocky it is around here. I think rocks are the official crop of Orange County. LOL!

My cousin has a Raptor and some of his friends also ride Yamahas so I'll mention it to him. I could use a set of 20" woods tires so if you have any you want to get rid of send me a PM with what you have and how much you want. Maybe you can bring something along for me to buy.

John

I took some time today to mount the new wheels and tires on the X, narrow it up some, put the air box lid on, and re-gear it to be more tight woods friendly, I think the ice gears would be a bit much for the hare scramble. I just need to put the tether on this week and I think I'm good to go for next weekends test flight. I feel like I need to go to a silver rim on the front now so it matches the back.

Got a reply to an email I sent to the club a while ago:

Friday night and Saturday morning early inspection and regestration for all classes jeeps buggies and atvs. Saturday morning "AROUND" 9 we will start all atv classes. Your required to have longsleeve shirt, boots and goggles. Also a teather cord killswitch is required. 20$ a person for the weekend or 8$ a day. 40$ to race plus a 10$ membership. There is cash payback to each class. Camping is avalible to all racers and spectators with a concession stand and bathrooms on site. Saturday night we do trophie presentations and kids race. Sunday is are short obstacle and drags and costs 10$ for each. Hope that awnsers all your questions. But please feel free to ask more. See ya at the races!!!

Vice president
Denton Kosmer

That should end any question about the tether cord. They really should update their rules if it is going to be a required item. I have to put one on my X soon and I'll be ready to go.

YOu could bring one of the 70's along and your son could race it in the kids race. It's just a slalom course set up on the drag strip. Your wife could race in the Utility quad class with us also.

I"LL definitly be there so that makes 4

I am still planning on coming. I should have the 350x good to go by then. She's still in pieces right now. I've got to send the head to DC this weekend to extract the header studs. Should be a quick turn around to get that back and put back together. I'm pretty sure atckeith is planning on bringing his 250r. I will verify and point him to this thread.

I'm ok guys. You are all my cousins. I love hanging and riding with all of you. Good to see you Bryan, and BJ, nice meeting the rest.
MY bike was loading up with fuel for the first 500ft, and I was hoping it would clear out. I Was even thinking of quiting because it was running so shitty. After the first hill climb, there was a straight, and I was sitting back on the seat like half throttle, and all of asudden it kicked in, did a wheelie with me hanging off the back, and I couldn't reach up to let go of the throttle, so off I went. Of course the trail turned, and I was on 2 wheels. Two things came to mind, 1. WOW it's running great!, and 2. this ain't gonna end well. I ran out of straight, and dumped it off the back. I bounced a few times, hit my head, crashed my leg into a boulder, and then some how the trike turned around and ran me over (which didn't hurt I don't think. Got the wind knock our of me, and couldn't get up for a few. Z28, and another guy on a 225 stop and moved my trike off the path, and made sure I was ok. I just told them to go on, and report it at the next check point. Two random guys ran up and also went back to tell them I crashed. I was just laying there for a while. Then I got up, and planned to ride out, but bars were bent, and throttle smased, clutch handle broken, I didn't have the strength to try and ride it out like that. So I started walking all f%^ked up out of the woods, back down the hill climb, and to the officials. THey got the ambulance over, and asked me a bunch of questions, and when I showed them the marks on my back, and that my neck and head hurt, they recommended I take a ride in their cool truck to the ER. Got a catscan of my neck, and x-rays of my back and leg, and all were negative. They said I was very lucky.
Tom lent my a chest protecter, and I believe it saved me from getting a broken back, since I think I landed on a rock, and the protecter spread out the load of the impact. I have a almost perfect impression of the protecter on my back. Also Jason lent me a long sleeve shirt, and that helped me too from getting more cuts and scrapes. So I hurt my head, neck, back, left leg in two spots, and my right knee. All pretty good bruises and contusions, but I will be ok. Took a jaccuzi bath, and I feel kind of good, plus I took a painkiller.

Sucks I missed the 4x4 trucks, I wanted to see them, and I never saw the course, but John said it was extremely rough. Oh well next time. I will either bring my 4x4, or the 200x. The 250R is over kill, plus I hate the torque band in the woods. It's not set up right for all that tight stuff, and you don't need 100hp.

JAson, pm your address and I will send your shirt back, washed of course ;)

Out of 7 trikes that entered, 6 were from this board and of the six only 3 finished plus the non-member one makes 4. Jason got 1st on his R, I got 2nd on my X, FastZ got 3rd on his R, and a guy who isn't on the board got a distant 4th on an old Yamaha that I think was a 200. The rest of the guys had one sort of crash or another that landed them out of the race altogether. Riverrat took a rough spill and ended up getting checked out at the local hospital but he's OK.

It was definitely a difficult and technical track. The tough sections are on par with the tough ones we used to ride over here but the difference is the ones there go on and on and on without letting up. Once in a great while you get a short break where the trail is smooth dirt but they are few and far between. I'd like to do the race that Jason said was the other course they have there. Its not quite as rocky and hard on you and your machine. Fortunately my X didn't suffer and damage worth mentioning and the only problems I had was the time I stalled it and it took a good 5 minutes to get it going again and then when I had to stop to adjust my goggles I let it stall again and it was a little tough to re-start. Overall I had a lot of fun and wish I could have stayed for the drags and obstacle course on Sunday.

Holy cow, that race seems close to impossible to finish without some sort of mechanical or bodily failure. Wondering what the percentage of starters is who actually finish the race? Glad to hear everyone is going to be ok after some time to heal up, cause it seems that just finishing could be considered a huge accomplishment.

Geeze guys, I'm glad to hear that everyone is "OK"....at least there are no permanent injuries. I hope you guys recover quickly!

JohnR.
06-13-2010, 09:51 AM
My recovery starts today. The muscles in my back are so sore its beyond words, my thighs are killing me, my shoulders hurt, and even my hands are sore.

I don't know about the rest of the classes but I did the math and we had about 55% of the three wheelers make it to the end. I think next time a lot more will make it. IMHO we lost some guys who were trying to run too fast on a course they didn't know at all. I think the key to this whole thing was knowing where you could make time and where you had to just make it through a section without breaking stuff, stalling, or tipping over. I'd like to give the course a shot on my 4x4 quad sometime, I think its more in line with the terrain of the track.

Yeah, I know. I can't believe it takes over an hour to do those 10 miles. Each time I got to the next 1/2 mile marker it was hard to believe that I only covered such a little bit of ground.

Did anyone stay to collect their winnings? The lady said since I had to go get Anthony from the ER she would send my stuff and his jersey to me. I'd like to know what I can expect in the package.

For an over the counter drug Aleve does wonders to your joint and ligaments...Cycle thru a weeks worth 1in the AM then 1 at night the second week you can repeat but after 3weeks you might consalt a Doctor for croinc pain. It reduces my joint popping noises and helps with cronic elbow/knee/back stress. I was told this by a Cleveland Clinic Sports Med Dr, tried it and it helped me. He said some have better results with than others, just passing it along. Raffa how far along did you get before gift rapping you tire around that ?tree, rock, stump? I can't believe that axle was any fun bending; not to mention limping back to the pits all busted, must have been a treat in itself. Wow that gash looks pretty deep. I'm sure the full spectrum of brusing is going to surface day3 after the race...When your like wow it felt good yesterday...man! Well get better men sounds like this was a hard fought battle.

John call Tom with the quad on the phone he grabbed your money and trophy. They actually put a trike on top of the trophy.

It was fun racing with everyone and glad to see it's nothing real serois for the poeple that wrecked. They are definitly having a trike class again in July.

All you trike guys that raced mite find this funny I actuclly beat Tom on his trx250r on adjusted time. I was 45 seconds faster.:D He got 23rd overall and I was 22nd. JohnR got 30th and Fastz28 was 2 or 3 after him overall.

Thanks for the info Jason. The lady said she was gonna mail it up to me, I probably won't see Tom for a while so he might end up having to mail it to me instead. LOL!

Unfortunately, I won't be able to make the one next month but I'm planning on getting to the one in September. I'm going to mark it on our calendar so we keep the dates open. Maybe the wife and kids will come, we'll see. Is the 7 miler the one that is the smoother course or is that the Coal Bucket?

Raffa I have some 9" stock wheels from Yamaha raptor's to help with your surgery. If you have some 4x115 mm hubs you'll be set.

The one set is silver with some black paint on the outside. cheap spray job should come off easily. they are not dented at all. Plus another set that was painted red. I"ll sell you a pair for $20 each i have no use for them.

Glad to see she's back and ready for action!

Is the 7 miler the same course as the one we just ran?

I wish I had 200X or maybe better yet a 200 autoX for that place. It seems like it isn't about the power, its about being able to be smooth and IMHO its way easier to be smooth on a lighter machine.

I have both sets of wheels dismounted we just have to figure out when we can make the deal. The Raptor wheels are way thicker by the lug nuts then the ones you were running.

Johnr the 7 miler is most of the same course backwards plus alot added past where we turned off interstate 80 and went to the 2nd check point.

Yes they are exactly like those but silver ones with the paint. No dents just the normal scuffs at the bead lip.

The red ones mite be a cheap powder coating job look to good for spray paint. The black ones just have black primer sprayed on the outer half.
