I've got a POS Dell D610 Lattitude that is my only computer. I f**king hate Dells and I've had this pile of monkey nuts for a year. Yesterday I lost all sound. I did an update that had been sitting around for a while and the sound came back albeit briefly after a shutdown. Then it left again. Somebody help me before I lob this thing off an overpass into traffic!

Try re-installing your sound drivers. I've always thought the D610 were a pretty good system. You may need a total re-install of the OS if your having ther issues. Also check to see if its still under warrentee. Might be?

Warranty? Ha! This thing was bought used and it's been a pain in the arse since day one. Drivers, OS, лунный крикет. Too much for me...

Try downloading this: http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&releaseid=R99254&SystemID=LAT_PNT_PM_D610&servicetag=&os=WLH&osl=en&deviceid=6466&devlib=0&typecnt=0&vercnt=1&catid=-1&impid=-1&formatcnt=0&libid=3&typeid=-1&dateid=-1&formatid=-1&source=-1&fileid=128550

It is your audio drivers, it will reinstall them for you, should give decent instructions on the screen to walk you through it, see if that helps.... According to DELLS website you have an on-board sound card, they are the worst IMO!! Oh well, hope this helps for you, i cannot tell without being in front of your computer.....

Go here and download this, burn it, put it back in PC, press enter a few times and never have to mess with it again. Stupid windows, lol.

Or if you dont wanna do that, try this one. might fix your sound issue.

I would personally rid the evil demon they call Windows from your PC. Ubuntu is bad @$$!! for really...

*Edit*
I just remembered i had an issue similar to yours when i was running XP. I would lose sound the minute i opened a torrent app, like Utorrent. If i rebooted i would have sound untill i opened it, then nothing. Maybe a virus or something? i think i ended up reinstalling windows to fix. That was a long time ago though...

Hey cox man, not to put down your advise, but if he is having trouble understanding the simple terms associated with windows, why the heck would you have him install such a crappy unstable thing like ubuntu on his computer????? Thats one of the worst versions of linux, and as it is linux is not for the computer challenged, its not something simple to use my friend..... Not trying to start any crap, but that was a bad idea....

Not to mention that when he installs that, it will wipe all his personal files, that could be very very bad, i would hate to see that happen, lots and lots of people never back their stuff up, so wiping the drive to install another OS could be devastating....
