I've been looking at this, trying to figure out if I can tow it or not.

The trailer weighs in at about 450 pounds. The bike weighs in at about 700 or so. The load capacity of the vehicle is 900 pounds. I've hauled 1400 pounds internally 1300 miles with zero ill effects in very very very hilly terrain.

The total weight of the trailer and bike will be 1350. My weight with a passenger will be about 470. Total weight carried will be 1820 pounds. Total time driven... 1.5 hours.

Now I know I can move the trailer...and I know I can move it along on the interstate at 70, my worry is engine stress... stopping isn't an issue, as that's something I can control with careful and creative driving.

So what does everyone think... will my little 108hp econobox tow it...or will I end up towing my car with the bike instead.

Your XB should be fine! If we are placing bets - I'll put my money on the Scion!

I would give it hell... I dont think the engine is your concern as much as transmission slipage... Manual or auto??

the engine will handle it fine its the trans you have to worry about.if its an automatic.time to put a tranny cooler on that scion

A couple points from someone who has trailered tons of stuff. 1350 pounds in the vehicle is a lot different than towing 1350 pounds. You have to take into account the extra rolling resistance of the trailer tires and the extra wind drag. If you can find a trailer that's as narrow as your Scion it will help with the air drag and you might want to run the tires at a slightly higher pressure to help with the rolling resistance.

not to change the subject but until you just parked that quad infront of that scion i never relized how small they really are!!! or how big the newer 4x4 monster quads are. if you took it easy i think you would be fine.

I towed my 660 grizzly full tank of gas & gas can & gear in my 05 camery from NNJ to WV. The only part where the camery was working hard was in WV. Those hills are sick!

A trans cooler will extent the life of the trans, but like what others asked. How often are you going to make the trips.

When i first read this i thought you wanted to tow the quad down the highway without a trailer. I was like WHAT?

I would ditch the slushbox IMO, but that's just me. I think they could pull each other, about evenly matched.

well as long as your smart and keep up on maintnance i tow 15k daily behind a 03 f250 with an automatic and it works good but i change tranny flid and filter every 15k just to keep it fresha nd workign more efficently. and a tranny cooler will help dramaticaly if i can pull a 5k bri mar dump trailer that weighs 2800lbs with a 2 wheel drive s 10 with a 4 cyl that scion should easily be able to tow a quad just try to ballance weight on trailer with slightly more tounge weight.

only plan on pulling it twice a year. Got a maintenance agreement so I'm gonna be doing a yearly checkup.

If I'm not mistaken the auto XB came with a transmission cooler factory. A lot of people add a supplement cooler.

I'll be towing about 90 miles with completely flat ground for the most part, only time I'll have any sort of incline is the Mississippi river bridge on I10 and the occasional overpass. Considering I pulled it home with a ford ranger with both less hp and less torque...that makes me feel a little better.

The Xb will pull it just fine.

think of it this way... if you pull it, and you blow your engine half way through the trip, chain it to your sportsman and you can pull the car home fine!

motor will be fine. tranny would be my concern in hilly terrain, but you'll be fine. just pay attention. if the thing downshifts all the time to maintain speed, SLOW DOWN a little ;)

this is louisiana, we don't have hills. lol

the highest point in the state is only like 500 feet or so.

One new concern was presented to me...what about bending the Unibody? THink that's enough load to do it?

Nah... You are good... I had a class 3 hitch on my old cherokee (unibody) and loaded the spot out of the thing without issue... Took getting rearended by a f150 to tear at the unibody/hitch mount point....

SYKO

take it from me that unibody is perfectly suited to tow if you get a good hitch that has adiquate mounting points it will evenly distrbute the weight and stress and it wont even know it.......now you go bailing over a 50 ft bridge you will....but thats if..

i worked at an AAMCO transmissions here for about 6 months. as long as your running a transmission cooler, have overdrive SHUT OFF and change your Fluid every 5k miles!!(USE GENUINE SCION/TOYOTA FLUID) you will be able to go 200k no problem

300rman
08-16-2010, 12:09 PM
trans fluid changes every 5k? yeah.....flushes are usually recommended every 50K.....ive seen trannies go a LOT farther than 200K with 50K intervals...5K interval changes will cost you more than a new tranny will by the time it chits out...

0GravityMX

not on the toyota units they are NOT cheap...and flushes arent worth it. just a general filter and fluid is all you have to do to keep it working right.
if you want some proof ill send pics of a clutch pack after it was flushed..and explain what happend to it

I bought a motor and tranny forthis car for 600$... And it had less than 20k on the clock. Not to mention all cylinders tested within five psi of each other.

I'm all for advice, but you're erring a little too much on the safe side for my tastes.

n Toyota or Honda, with its production occurring predominantly in the US and japan, should run 200k problem free with oil changes. My first motor went caput due to some high water.
