View Full Version : Picked up a new truck 86 Chev halfton Project
Thought i would throw some pics up of my new ride, 86 Chev 2wd, 305....For a case of beer. It's on Propane, but that is Getting Hocked, Back to Gas for this Gem, The body is Solid other than the Cab-corners, and a few dents n stuff, Someone used a golf-ball for filler in one cab corner
Took 2 hours of pressure washing to get most of the crud out from underneath it today...All Cow crap and feed (truck came from a feedlot) Got it fired up with a propane bottle off the forkift...Runs SMOOTH...not bad for 264,000 kms....Need to rip the interior out tomorrow and wash it, chase the mice out....yet and pic up a few parts, check the brakes ect :beer

nice project beast.i didnt see the propane set up how is it connected?
Theres a couple tanks in the Box under that old wood tool box, runs a line up to the regulator on the passenger fender then to the Carb- or whatever they call it...Not much a propane fan...dont need to worry about 60 gallons of it leaking out and Blowin me sky-high:lol::lol:

Doesn't look to bad. I've got an '86 GMC, and the body is in about the same condition, and I drive mine pretty much every day
Yea its not bad for an Alberta truck....Surprised the Box fenders where good...Cant see in the pics really but the one box side on the passenger side above the tail light is Mangled pretty good, Nothing a multi-angle Swing press cant fix.

how's the floor? mines been replaced once before, at it rusted out again.... damn road salt
Floor looks solid From underneath, need to pull the seat and carpet to check it out, We don't use Much salt on the roads here so it helps. Gota find a Cheap aluminum intake and carb too...

before you go any further, ar eyou sure you dont have a DUAL FUEL setup? not just only propane? my k5 had dual fuel setup for a little while, gas and pane.
Yea i looked into that...Far as i can tell its only pro-pane..no fuel lines Or a pump anymore..If it was i would leave it, Just don't need Frozen Propane bottles in the middle of winter....

My father works on propane trucks ever day if you take a engine off of it and put it back onto gass it wan't last long the propane burnes so clean that when put back onto gas it will run dirty and over a few months blow up.

thats complete nonsense... if a clean engine were to blow up in a few months from gasoline... then how would a new engine ever last?
Well, I dont think i will have to many problems, Yes i know propane burns CLEAN,,, Heck the oil in it looks like its fresh outa the Jug after 6 years of sitting, i Could see over time the carbon build up Plugging oil gally's n such...as with any old Gas jobber, As for cratering in a few months...i highly doubt it, If it dose...just an excuse to throw a BBC in it  :beer

i would try to sell the whole propane setup to someone .. theres alot of offroaders out there that would like it for their trail rigs
Anyone Real familiar with holly carbs? put a kit in the one, manual choke 600cfm...running it on the stock intake with an adapter,,, and seems to work good other than a Real hi idle..messed with it a bit today...checked for intake leaks,,,Set the float levels....Played with the screws and nothing!! can only get a normal idle with an almost closed choke, im starting to suspect a leaky manifold gasket,,,,Any suggestions???
Well got the Problem solved...It was the Junk- Adapter set up To Use a Square bore on a spread bore intake, Not enough sealing Surface (there is some) between the secondary bores. Was Sucking air-Could See the Wash marks on the gasket...So on the old q jet went for now. Maybe put the aluminum one When i get more time. Also Started On Getting all the Mouse Nest/crap out of the cab....Just need to do the heater box/vents Tomorrow....will get some pics.
Couple pics after the Mice where removed, Got the brakes Working good today and the Carb Dialed in pretty close....Still need to pick up a Fuel tank and Go over a few other things. :beer

Cool thread, old Chevy trucks never die. So what further plans do you have for this project?

judgeing by the color of the interior.. it looks to be a old U.S state/county truck..

Well the plan is to Use it as a daily driver, Going to Pull as many dents out as i can, touch up the paint a bit...picked up a set of duals for it yesterday..the stock system is falling apart,,, Might stick the intake and holly on it After its on the road, Yea know..Drive er till it dies..!!! I thought it used to be an old alberta high-ways truck, Could have been a lease at one time, but i found the original bill of sale From a local dealer, to a paving Company...So who knows

Its easy to shorten them old long trucks too. There is a flat in the frame right behind the cab. You cut about 13 1/4 inches out, roll her back together and weld it up. Sit you a short wheel base bed on her, bob a little off the end and mount the bumper. I have done a couple of them and sure makes them look alot better. Driveshafts aren't hard to shorten either but you may want to go have it ballanced.
**That is unless you just want to haul lots of trikes in it.

milk, bread, eggs, ADD medicine, you know, the usual.
Little update!! Got it on the road today, Cleaned up pretty good for a 24, Ended up Putting a new tank, pump, Carb, air filter, Cap, rotor, wires, plugs into it..Fixed the lights, Bled the brakes Gutted and cleaned it, cleaned up the weatherstripping and re-used it (yes i'm that cheap) stuck a set of duals on the stock manifolds (cant go wrong for 50 bucks from the wrecker) Runs pretty good for a stock 305 with 264000km, Still hits 85mph no problem!! Things to go yet...Cab corners, Carpet, radio, Trans pan gasket...And maybe some Paint for the rims and mirrors..that whit is driving me nuts!!!

Glad to hear that you're making some progress on that beast. Now all you need is some dual 2" exhaust with cherry bombs and lots of gray primer and it will look like the stereotypical "mechanic's" truck! Oh yeah, don't forget to drive around without a rear bumper.
Didnt get the cab corners in this weekend but I did get some stickers on!!!!
I pulled this out of another truck today....should make for a good tire burner in the farm truck!!!

I've always liked the look of the rally rims; nice touch! Strip off any remaining chrome and paint it flat black. What's that new mill got in it?
Well I have been busy this week!!! Ploped the new "mill" in. its a 98 5.7 vortech, pretty stout in stock form compared to the old 305. Switched it over to a carb and electric fuel pump with a 600 vac secondary holly and headers for now, need to finish up the exaust and a few other small things tommorw....next is some front end work and brakes  and some better pictures..haha
