So I simply could not pass up the deal my local Honda shop was selling a new leftover 2008 TRX450ER for. I bit the bullet and bought one on a Wednesday.

I rode it for approx 10 minutes and was less than impressed. It just felt stupid to me. that Saturday night - we had a quad cutting party
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs1135.snc4/149710_472405192944_607307944_5736805_7340539_n.jp g

The following Saturday I was riding it in this form.
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs1219.snc4/155131_455154523314_264719198314_5577207_8259255_n .jpg

I will ride it this entire week - then tear it down for frame powder coating and all other painting and polishing.

I gotta say - this bike just feels right - the handling is amazing - and in my opinion far easier for me to ride than the TRX version. This thing is truly amazing.

My last Honda 450 conversion had CRF Cam, Yoshi exhaust and no airbox lid. I simply could not use all the power that motor put out on a track. I am going to leave this guy stock for a few races and see how I do - I think besides the holeshot - I should be just fine on it. Also - it is so quiet in stock form compared to a piped one!

Chopping up a NEW quad? That's taking it to a whole 'nother level! Looks like you guys are getting conversions down to a science. Nice work

Bravo man. That golf cart had it coming. I can understand what your theory is about actually being faster in its stock form. The power is going to be a lot more usable, or "tractable", I think...

The one time I rode a 450 quad, it just slid all over the place and never seemed to go in the direction I pointed it.

Great job, looks really good :beer

Thanks for the compliments guys. For the TRX450 being Honda's MX racebike - it sure doesn't steer very well. I honestly think I can corner faster on this thing on flat ground than I could with the quad. Part of that might be I am so used to using extra body english from riding trikes my whole life - that I can not do that cause of the front fenders on the quad - not enough room up there.

looks awesome! A couple of things... is that front wheel much smaller than a liquid 250R wheel? It looks it, maybe it's just the ultra beefy forks and the upside down trick that does it. Another, is there some way to wrap those rads? I would smack them off for sure on my trails.

I'm thinking of doing the same thing, getting a trx450R and trying it out, and then cutting it up if I don't like it as a quad.

After cutting up the quad and finishing the conversion, do you take it back and show it to the dealer? Wondering what his comments would be. Going to bring that to Rose City next year?

atctim
11-22-2010, 05:32 PM
The rads are tucked back far enough not to get hurt. They are tighter than my last 450 build - that I barrel rolled and did not hurt them.

Hey Hublake - I do plan on bringing it to Rose City. Also - I do plan on taking it back to the dealer for it's first servicing - they recommended it!

YES!!! I love it:Bounce Golf carts seem very strange after riding 3wheelers for so long, cause they turn sooooo slowwwwww, and the lack of room. It's all about the fun factor for me. Because of that, couches simply don't compare...:naughty:

That is one awesome trike!!!! I wouldn't mind to do that to mine, but the wife would probably hurt me. I feel right at home on my 450r, or at least in the air. But you're right, it doesn't like to turn. It's great if you're in loose dirt or sand, but on hard ground and on my track if you turn too fast it hooks up hard and tries to barrelroll! I can tell it's heavier than the 250r in the air, but not awkward. Between the two, the trike is much more enjoyable. Feels more like a bike in the air.

What neck are you using, what forks and valving with what springs? Who made your triples? Looks like your ride height is rather high, or is that just the picture? Looks great, alot more modern than your other hybrids. With as many 450s as there are being converted now we need to all have a 450 ride sometime just to meet up and see how each of us have done it and maybe ride each others if everyone is okay with that.

Neck - or steering tube is 250R - the rest of the frame is custom built. Forks are stock CR125 - they don't feel too bad - perfect for trails - but I think I will have to get them re-worked for MX. they are STOUT! triples were made by my cousin - The Snake. The ride height is identical to my last one - it does look high in the picture.

I was waiting for the race review to comment on your build. You can't tell much from the gate shot but height wise your all pretty close. The rake on each looks different but thats camera angle too. It's cool your extremely happy with the results of the build and finishes at Summit. Is TT looking to dominate the CRA points series? I have to stir it up so I'll just ask...Is there any nods given to 1 rider or anouther on team TT? Will we ever see a pitboard read "let him by" for a points race? I project you as the Team Leader with 2young guns under the TT race sig...Will one help the other in a race to the top spot? Your taking on TPC: you refered to as "a pair of roses", in the CRA series head to head. Is there a bit of...Custom Builders competion, as well as the racing going on this year? The 2011 Series seems to be bringing more to the table this year for you and team TT, thanks for your time. GOODLUCK this year to all of you....I'll see you at the races!

WOW - lots of questions - let me address each one individually:

I was waiting for the race review to comment on your build. You can't tell much from the gate shot but height wise your all pretty close. The rake on each looks different but thats camera angle too.
All of them are different - no doubt - an inch of rear tire height makes a noticable rake difference believe it or not.
It's cool your extremely happy with the results of the build and finishes at Summit. Is TT looking to dominate the CRA points series?
Honestly - who isn't looking to dominate the first race series for trikes in 26 years!!!
I have to stir it up so I'll just ask...Is there any nods given to 1 rider or anouther on team TT?
Most likely no, never - we are geared towards good sportsmanship and we would not run "blocking
Will we ever see a pitboard read "let him by" for a points race?
no - but we might see some pitboards with something funny on them to keep things light. Like "Trim your mustache - too much wind resistance!!!"
I project you as the Team Leader with 2young guns under the TT race sig...Will one help the other in a race to the top spot?
I am really no more a team leader than anyone else out there on the track.. We are however considered a race team - and will help each other anytime - or any other trike racer for that matter. It is more of a friendship type bond than a real race team though!
Your taking on TPC: you refered to as "a pair of roses", in the CRA series head to head. Is there a bit of...Custom Builders competion, as well as the racing going on this year?
Not really - triker friends are always trying to out do each other - LOL
The 2011 Series seems to be bringing more to the table this year for you and team TT, thanks for your time. GOODLUCK this year to all of you....I'll see you at the races!
Everyone I seen out there this weekend have stepped up their game - BIGTIME. Eveyone is taking the points series as serious as possible but we are all friends out on the track. At the end of the race - each and everyone of us has to go to work the next day. A plaque or trophy is not worth anyone getting hurt for. Basically it is still like putting on a show for the crowd - but the race fever pulses through each riders veins on the track and the top riders (as well as the beginners) are always trying to improve, be faster and beat the guy out in front!

I can honestly say that my new TT450 is the just like someone taking my ole pink/yella 250r and wedging a 450 motor in it. It handles WAY better than I could of ever dreamed. The full length forks made me think it was not possible to make it handle the way it does. I can honestly say, I hopped on it, did a quick 5 minute spin in the yard at ATCTIM's and loaded it in the trailer.
We got to the track, and as soon as I fired it up and starting throwing down some laps I felt SO comfortable on it.

I cleared the middle double and entire back section my FIRST lap on practice. It feels like a 250r! I LOVE IT!

The power is incredible, it handles the way I want. I cant ask for anything more.

Thanks alot Snake and Tim, you built me my dream wheeler.

I can testifie that the track bar to bar is a SHOEBOX, with little room to pass. Nodoubt a lot of us 2stroke fans love to see the Green bike up front. You should also understand, Carl is fast and has great skillz. I really can't wait till BIG GAME...with the addition of a few 2stroke bigbores, gate drops will become increasingly difficult to holeshot. As a person who has tasted the roost off one of these NEW generation Hybrids, they're impressive. I would say thanks to TIM and the TT crew for bringing it to the table this year. At the end of 2010 it seem TPC my have had an edge on the upcoming 2011 Series. TT had motor issues late in the season: Which may have prompted this NEW frontend design along with the revamped 450..I'd say the field has leveled itself off in a big way. I can't wait till the frist outdoor track when these bikes really shine.:beer

Is it just me or is anyone else loving how the green meanie is keeping up with all these new hybrids.... Maybe just me?

Awesome build BTW. It looks great, you made it look easy and I'm guessing it wasn't

You guys do realize the the 1st generation Tecate beat everything that day for a 1st place?? Carl and that tecate are so stinking fast. Carl beat me 2 years ago at Summit on a 200X!!! Yes - I was on a 450 conversion - and he was on a 200X!!!!!

TPC and TT racing are the new TIGER's of 2011. Build the Racer in your garage. This post gets my blood pumping, the ol lady laughed when i asked if we could move to the midwest just so i can race 3 wheelers. Who knows i still may convince her. I have a TPC trike fund bottle next to my bed i fill with change. As soon as that sucker is half full its time to pull the trigger. Best of luck to all of you racing this season. You can truly call yourselves vintage racers.

Yup - the very best built bike in the world is only as good as it's rider!!! Old Carl Wickersham is one talented man!

Good old 2-stroke...wonder what the weight difference is between the 450 conversion and the Tecate?
And yes...the machine comes second to the quality and experience of the rider. I've watched local enduros with a guy 56 years old running circles around much younger riders on faster, more powerful machines. This year he was racing a 200 KTM, and nobody could touch him. Same applies to 3 wheelers also...from what I can tell.

Very cool build...I like it!

Yeah without guys like Carl, and some others...The endless debate over 2stroke vs 4stroke might come to an end. TT putting the torches to quads only fuels the 4stroke side of the debate...now with a few 2stroke Bigbores to hit the track this Spring, the mix of machine on the line....2011 you better come get some! I'm close on my build but I already feel behind...might need a rabbit trick to distract you guys on the gate.:naughty:

LOL - Nice Matt - I like it! E-Dog - we could build you one for roughly $1500 - but you have to supply all the parts + the quad. That is where it gets expensive.

Give me a ball park figure on quad and parts?

I have been interested in one of these for a while, so I have been assessing the price breakdown

This is what I am seeing, correct me if I am wrong:

Quad = $2500-3,000 (I have looked at some 04's around this price, I love the kick start only)

Dirt bike parts = 1,000-2,000$ depending if I try to buy up all the parts I can find or buy a cheap doner bike

Plus the kit for $2,600 (TPC), or ??? (Tionesta)

Looking at 6k at the cheapest. =\ I need to make more money still.

I do like this newest model you guys have made. I wish I had these fabrication skills.

You can get the 06 and up models also in the R format which is kick only. The 06 up also has a very updated motor that is actually based off the crf motor where as the 04-05 is not, but it does however have a stronger bottom end than the 06 up. Also that electric start is handy. This new 450s are temperamental and not fun to kick when you start getting into moter mods.

Um I had an 04, I loved it. The motor is very similar to the crf motor, just tamed down and made for a quad. The cam is milder, the valves are smaller, it has 2 rings on the piston, (none of that pancake piston nonsense), Different gears, and its made to forward kick. And the 04 TRX450r with kick only, are really easy to kick. It would fire on first or second kick while cold. While hot (with the hot start) it was first kick every time.

Girls bikes have electric start anyways :p

E-dog . if you are thinking about having me build you a trike. please try to find and 06 and up. 04 05's have an oil cooler that is a pain to deal with and also a shorter swing arm. i can do you up a bike for $1500. triples and brake rotor adapters included. if you want i can get you a rough list of parts you will need. i have been seeing 06 07 bikes going for 2600 to 3000 around here
