Awesome!! Do you have any recent photos of it?? Got any Team Green goodies laying around you'd like to part with? How about a Hoosier front tire or two?

Racingdr.l
11-29-2010, 11:46 PM
Yes I have tires, But they are not in that good of shape, back in the 80's Hoosier used a type of natural rubber, they rotted before we could wear them out. yes i have banners ,flags and a 24 karet overlay team green belt buckle. some parts not many...Harry Klemm was very tight on spare parts...

dcreel

Got any pics of the tires you have? Hell, I'd like to have a Hoosier front to hang on the wall if it's not good enough to run. Post some more pics.. Welcome to the site..

ok guys that was definatly a bike that was raced back in the day but not a "factory racer" and it is not a 87 . There is one detail of the bike that is photographed that tells me so. By the way the guys were never given 87's to race . The guys that stayed with team green after the 86 t-3 were given quads I think either Hondas or Suzuki's until they came out withthe t-4 . I picked up a bike last year that looks almost exacly like that one out here in So Cal . It also had the calfab , number plate ,team green ceet cover and steering stabalizer . The axle was off a 84 just like this one as well . Mine had custom hand cut sand tires on it notdirt tires. I sold off the custom parts to a guy doing a old school racer up in Oregon .I still have the sand tires and Ceet cover though. What happened to the one i picked up you ask ? Well here she is http://www.wix.com/kawasakitecate/atc

Come on, Frank.. You're going to have to do better than that.. Got any pics of it before with the race parts on it? How about a pic of the Team Green CEET cover? This is a pretty hard group to pull one over on.. You got to dot your i's and cross your t's.. In my guesstimation this has to be the rarest 86-87 Tecate I have ever seen.. The things that would point this out as an 87 vs an 86 are all removed for racing, how can you tell it's not an 87? After the three wheeler racing stopped most of the factory Tecate riders rode Mojave's with a 2 stroke transplant. Not Honda's or Suzuki's..

Doug
I have spent the better part of 2 years learning about the 86 -87 T-cats top to bottom .Yes I have pics of mine .Who do you take me for bighair or trike builder lol lol .I have no reason to B.S . I knew I would bait somebody into asking some of your questions I did not think you would hit me with all of them .First I can not figure out how to load pictures on 3WW so I will email them to you .If you want to load them you are welcome to do . If you want to know ALL the differences well here they are
How about we call them "FRANKS TOP 10" ? LOL LOL
1. rear caliper with emergency brake
2. front brake lever with e brake
3. keyed ignition (have heard that this was accually only a "option" in 87 from a old school Kawasaki Dealership guy)
4. headlight bracket on 87 was slightly different to accomodate the keyed ignition
5. decals were changed and shift pattern on tank as pictured on mine was added and on/off decal for ignition was aslso added
6 .I have read that the rear fenders were changed from 86 to 87 to to rub . Not sure if the ones still being sold today are 86 or
87 left overs?
7.rear brake e brake cable was added
8. 87 models came with handlebar clamp covers
9 swingarm cliper mount was slighly fifferent and mounted in different spot

10 Like you said all this stuff is gone off the "factory bike" so how can I be certain it is a 86? Well there is at least one more difference that is pictured on the "factory bike" but just for the fun of it I will see if anybody else wants to spill the beans . I will tell you in a day or so if nobody else spots the difference .By the way Doug you mentioned a group of team green factory riders in a earlier post .I have confirmed from one of these riders that both bikes mine and this one NOT to be a Factory bikes .If youwant I will forward the email from him to you as well .

first of all no not smokin anything , that law did not pass last month here in Cali .
Of course it now looks like a stock bike that is what I do .I do oem restorations. Not the quality of Mike at Vintage motorsports .Mine are more for the guy that wants a showroom looking bike with all oem parts but to restored to the point you don't want to ride it .The bike pictured on my website is accully a combination of about 7 tecates that I bought to resotore .All the best parts from the 7 bikes were used on this bike .I have sold 3 1986's already on ebay .I have 2 more 1 almost finished the 6th one still in boxes .Yes I did have buy a bike that looked almost exactly like yours .The steering stabalizer has 2 boss's that had to be welded to the frame where the vin numbers are stamped right .Once they were welded on then they drilled holes right through the frame to put some type to plunger inside to make the stabablzer work .Still think I am smokin something ? Mine had the the rear of the frame modified as well although they acully welded on a six pack rack for duning .
For the record I think your bike is a top notch old school racer and you should be able to get 7k or more on the open market (ebay), just don't think it was a Official factory bike that was given to one of the Factory riders . There is only one of those and it is in Jimmy's garage

Racingdr.l
12-03-2010, 11:59 PM
I really don't need to explain any thing about this Tecate to you,,everyone can see the pictures...... there is no plunger in this stabilizer...may be when you have little time i could explan the working of this valve...... this tecate would run circles around Jimmys Jp Tecate....Talk to Donnie he will tell you...

I am not asking for any expanations .It is a great piece of history just not a Factory bike .To tell you the truth I did not even take the stabablizer apart as I know nothing about them and did not want to mess with it . I just remember the that the stabablizer was not a bolt on and go item that the frame had to be modified to use it The way I can tell that your bike is a 86 is that the foot brake pedal is held on by a bolt .The 87 was held on with a stud with a hole drilled through it at the end .a washer with a cotter pin going through the hole held the pedal on more like the 86 honda 250r design.

According to kawasaki.com, and the parts diagrams for the 86 and 87 Tecate. All of the brake pedal parts use the same exact part numbers for the 86 and the 87 Tecate.

Frank,, i do give you credit on your knowledge,,,although you were not there on delivery of this Tecate over 23 years ago, and how i know because it was just Heidi, her dad, myself and James degaine...you know stock tecate and we need you on this site.

Dang Frank.. You should have rebuilt it to it's former glory.. You are right it looks a lot like this one. I wish you could still buy those split rear sprockets. Much easier to replace.

fmnrd
12-04-2010, 04:29 PM
ya I thought about doing it up but decided to do it stock like the rest of them . I sold/traded almost all those parts to a guy in Oregon who is doing a racer type bike.I will have to email him and ask him to post pictures of his project .I forgot about that 2 piece sidewinder sprocket ya that was a cool piece . the bike also had what I think were UFO Radiator schrouds . if you look at the pictures of them you will notice that they have 3 windows vs the 2 windows in the stock ones .

a prime reason one should not think one knows everything about something, on the other hand he blindly made your trike worth that much more and robbed himself , then tells you yours is fake to. wow.

Nice machine and pics.
A few close friends are HUGE Tecate fans, and actually met with Jimmy White a few years ago.

Can you tell me this, I am curious?

What would you say the percentages were for the sanctioned trike races in the 80's?

True MX track vs. TT style track?
Were there harescrambles?

Most of the pics and vids I see are from mostly TT type tracks.

sugarhead
12-05-2010, 10:04 AM
So what are you selling it for?

Racingdr.l
12-05-2010, 11:19 AM
sugarhead what is it worth to you......mosh your reply,,,,in the 80 ther was a sanctioned group called AATVA that lobbied for us trikes riders that followed AMA rules an work very well..AATVA would hold, this was in 1987 i think 86 was the same 9 MX races and 9 TT races total with the finals in hurricane Mills, TN.. I think there were more non santioned TT races on the East coast from Ohio to Florida because it was fun , fast and exciting and for the promoter it was a fast and easy way to make money, TT racing is were i got my start, same as Tim Helterm, Steve Mendenhall and Rodney Gentry to name a few...
Yes their were Harescrambles, sometimes AATVA would hold a race the next day after a MX or TT race if there was lot of extra land on site.. Ted Trey was very fast in the woods...Well hope this helps,,if not let me know i will dig deeper..

Mosh

those foil pics were cool. Can you imagine if three wheelers would have never been banned, just think of how different they would have evolved for different racing applications, I could see them looking like sprint car set-ups for flat track..Definately cool though.

Racingdr.l
01-06-2011, 06:38 PM
Lazybiker79...I ran Hoosiers tires 97 percent on the time...front was a t-30 custom groved tri-trac 10 inch wheel,, the size were never on the side of the tires,,when we got tires we also got the new wheels...rear was a t-10 custom groved tri-trac 10 inch wheel.

Hey I just caught this thread and the more I read about it the more interested I became .I have a few question's that i'd like to get answered if possible.Racingdr.l , from your posting's I can obviously see that you know alot on the history of the '87 Tecate's ,now I may have missed it somewhere but were you on any of the race team's and if so who are you?I'm not farmilar with the #21 on the machine either.Threw my year's of being in my line of business and just hanging out in general and threw the internet i've been lucky enough to have talked to some old school racer's from back in the day as well as present day racer's and other famous motorsport's people and just wanted to know who you were? I talked to Tim Helter a few month's ago and if memory serve's me correctly I think he was looking for a Tecate maybe if you know him you could get ahold of him or I could let him know.He sent me some pic's of him in a TT race on what I thought was an '87 but it must have been an '86 if i'm getting this correct.Cool info none the less and i'm gonna keep an eye on this thread or feel free to drop me a pm..
