I predict there will be a run on potassium iodide
in the next few days.

Depending on the weather, of course.

I WIN A PRIZE!!!!!

There is NOthing on the entire west coast containing iodine
that can be found.

All the supermkts, health foods stores have run out.

Even the farm store got swamped all day with requests for anything containing iodine
or potassium iodide.

Maybe salt licks for cattle.

Seaweed soup?
sea kelp?

And we thought zinc/phosphorus and motor oil was a real issue.

Well Iodine serves a series of purposes. The main one being medical and the next runner up water purification. Am I correct Doc?

potassium idodine is a band-aid/antidote for radiation poisoning of the thyroid gland. I guess the west coast is stocking up for when the melt down fall out drifts across the pacific.

The next run up will be contruction material & metals. If you have scrap copper be ready it's gonna go up IMO.

I'm not worried about the radiation..... but I might hold onto my next load of scrap a little longer..lol

We are also running out of Tequila.

Farmers in Mehico are burning up their Agave cactus crops, in favor of growing corn and shipping it to the US, due to high ethanol use. Agave is like the panda of the plant world as far as how needy it is and picky about reproducing.

And helium, if the market could naturally set prices a baloon's worth of helium would be shy of $100. And if you are into the whole "technology" fad, helium IS A NECESSITY.
Of course we can make a synthetic helium, at 10,000 times the current cost......

whats the rush for iodine Doc?

Sorry if this duplicates, but Billy got it.
Potassium iodide blocks receptor sites in the thyroid gland from contamination
of radioactive iodine 137 ( or whatever the *(&^) which is a normal by product of
uranium and plutonium fission.

It is important to never take any unless detectable radiation is present.
Iodine is pretty poisonous by itself, bound to potassium as an iodide is less so.

So, say, if your drinking water is just plain dirty from bacteria, you can purify it with
iodine.
If the air is contaminated with cesium, and that uranium/plutonium nonsense,
then potassium iodide doesn't seem so bad.

It's like they say, if you're starving in the woods, it's better to go to sleep hungry
than eat the wrong mushroom and have the last few hrs be horrible.

Man, what a lousy topic. Sorry if it's offensive. But I though you guys would like to know
what's going on.

I think I'll wander over to that new kids post about a squeak and forget the whole thing.

Well, with the anthrax scare it was cypro, an antibiotic made by only one company .

I'd look into the post chernobyl economics of scandanavia.

Cattle feedgrass, water, milk was all contaminated.

We don't hear too much about long term effects on neighboring countries.
Of course, I had no real reason to look either.
