Anybody into the hobby? I've been flying for 14 years, working on a couple of sponsors right now.

I fly mainly 3D, but I'm also a big slope nut :Bounce

Combat is my favorite, here's a video I made year before last...

I've been flying for over 10 years. Here is my clubs web-site which I designed and run:
http://blackdirtsquadron.org/
You can check out my www.youtube.com/antslake channel and see some RC videos too.
I fly, run boats, and used to race RC, I was sponsored back in the early 90's. I won the ROAR North East nationals against 90 other drivers, that was pretty cool, then I got married, lol. That will end your RC career quickly. I think that is biblical or something.

fly, yes...land, no. i got one about 20 years ago and had it up about 15 times. i have yet to land it myself. it always finds the ground before i am ready for it to land. it is so heavy from glue that the last time i had it up, it just barely got off the ground. i started the engine up about 3 years ago and still runs like a new one. my favorite crash was when the elevator came off (i panicked) and it hit a brick wall. somehow the engine survived and i was able to crash it 5 or 6 more times after that.

RC planes are pretty cool, but only one question remains.

Can it blend?

what is the easy cheap way to get started with rc planes?
Gliders that are held together with rubber bands?

I started with one in the tall grass so every crash was a soft landing
until it hit the only tree in a 1,000 yards.

Simple. Anything, no matter what, is utterly useless unless it can blend. The V8 engine for example:

I used to have a few planes back in the day, but I sold them to fund other hobbies over the years. You Definatly got some mad skills! I know how hard it is to keep them from splintering into pieces, let alone be able to fly like that!

Hobby Zone Micro Champ RTF. $80, includes everything, and has taught thousands of pilots how to fly already. Horizon Hobby is real good with their customers too, they treat them well.

Or if you would rather a larger plane, then the Hobby Zone Super Cub LP RTF. Again, has everything in one box, even transmitter batteries, for $180. This has taught hundreds of thousands of people how to fly, and is THE most popular RTF trainer out there (along with the Multiplex Easy Star, who has taught similar numbers of people how to fly):

Or get an easy star, it is near indestructible.
The best thing that helped me was using a simulator with my transmitter.
Aerofly or real flight are great training tools. I practice all my moves on that before I go fly. In 10 years I've only had to trash one plane due to my own thumbs.

Next question.

Can it be used to benefit the old?

Xpress

Yes and no. First, the ones that are into the hobby, good relaxation for them, and social time...

No because the ones who are out of it hate it.

When I was in about the 7th grade I decided I wanted to get into RC planes and started hanging out with the local club which were all retired guys mostly. I witnessed an 80 something year old man crying when he crash landed his pride and joy WWII era plane and pretty much totaled it. If I remember correctly a servo failed and he was barely able to keep it from going into the bay.

Next question.

Can it be used to benefit the old?

Yes! I know of several older people who I help fly that enjoy it tremendously. Matter of fact, the hobby has more old people in it, than young people. That is something we work on all the time, trying to get young people involved.

That dude who crashed his plane and started crying needs to learn to let go. Most planes will meet their end, very few get retired. Although that number has been changing more towards the better with todays planes, construction, and radio systems.

When this happened, my kids cried though, they weren't expecting it. Kind of traumatized them. The big yellow and blue is mine. She still flies today.

Yep, every plane has an expiration date. Half the fun is trying to figure out when that is. :D

well this plane wasn't a $200 complete out of the box job, guy easily had over 1k into this plane plus all the hours building and perfecting it. Its not like he broke down into hysterics, but he was visibly upset none the less.

I know, often times the work you put into it is more valuable to you than any price tag.

Usually, scale planes start out at those $100 kits you can find from Great Planes or wherever, then the ball rolls down hill from there  Some guys even scratch build them, based off of photos and simple knowledge of what airfoil to use.
