Since all of the Toyota forums I have posted on are pretty much silent, I figured I would ask here.

Basically, my dads 84 4-runner has been a nightmare since we got it. 3 engine rebuilds later (in one year, don't ask) and it's all back in one piece and seems to run good, except I discovered it has the Federal carburetor on it. My guess is that is the reason why it doesn't pass smog.

It has all California vacuum components on it, which don't quite match up to how the Federal vacuum components go.

What I am wondering is if it will work this way, or do I need to be looking for a California carb?

if your lines arent matchin up of the carb id check around at some salvage yards for the right one.. during the 80s isuzu used a smog pump. if toyota used one it may not be working properly and is whats causing it to fail emission. also id check the catalytic converter it has alot to do with emission. from what i understand the cali emission laws are about some bullcrap. im glad OK doesnt have all of that. hope u can get it to pass .

I used to have to pay a guy that had a family member who worked at the dmv to smog my Toyota when I lived there. They run so much better when you tear all of the smog equipment out..

The smog sheet said something about NOX, of which one of our buddies at the toyota dealer said it's to deal with the EGR system. I'm hoping I got it with the re-route of the vacuum system.. Also, we did go to the local junkyard and pulled a bunch of california vacuum components, and put them on. They seem to be working, but no 22R carbs, or 22R engines- EVERYBODY pulls those engines for some reason...

Yes, But I drove mine for 30K miles with a 12" crack on the left hand side by the bellhousing. It had been JB welded, but it was time to replace the motor. It was a cammed 20R with a ported and polished 22r head with sidedraft webers. It was a monster but you couldn't keep a transmission, rear end, or with a centerforce 2 clutch in it, the clutch pedal kept removing itself from the firewall.. It was finally stolen out of Costa Mesa..

Not to mention the trim it picked up in High School :D
