I traded some of my parts bikes/trikes for a barely running 82 last weekend, my girls really took a liking to it so i went parts shopping and ended up with three more complete pre 81 parts carts/cars/whatever you call them... I'm going to rebuild the engines on two and get them going so the girls can have some fun... my question is, does anyone have any detailed pictures of the race cages (like the challenger cages) from the mid 80's I really want to dress them up a bit so my girls can run them on our backyard flat track when I finally get it built this summer...

it's my buddy's 81 fl250, fun little bugger. frame up rebuilt/resto of sorts, one complete runner and 2-3 carts with assorted parts between them. he keeps offering to sell it to me for $800. i don't really need it or even have the space, but i want it and i would like to have it. i just don't know what to do.

i'm not totally sure, but i think the cage is a Desert Star? (EDIT: it is a Challenger Race Cage.) 250r hubs and i think rims on the rear. i'd have to ask him about the shocks and other things. he did have a DG Gold head for it off a parts cart, but thought it was in too bad of shape to keep. he's wishing he would of kept it now though.
EDIT: i recommend putting padding atleast where he has it in the top pic. also wedge/press your feet against the front of the foot tub to help brace yourselves in there and use the arm straps if it came with it. watch out when sliding sideways and then letting off the gas. everyone that has driven his has managed to roll it doing donuts even him and me  his cousin is the oly one who was bright enough to try and "catch" himself. s.o.b. came close to breaking his arm.

I used to lower the seats in mine in the 80s so I could fit. No way I could fit in that green one.

That cage reminds me of the Challenger cages from way back. That offered a cage and a full suspension tube frame if my hazy memory is close...

They are a TON of FUN. We used to drag two of 'em out to Glamis when we ditched school. Put the Dick Cepek Sand Sports on and rock n' roll.

Cool thread here (I like the Pilot forum):

Check out the Challenger catalog here (sure looks like your cage):

I remember drooling over that catalog in 8th grade.

I have a rolling chasis with good plastics that I have been holding on to for a "someday project" but I will probably never get to it. I think they are real cool.

not mine, my buddy's :)
the seat is lowered in the first/current pic. the old one was a funky fiberglass one that didn't fit the frame right. that's why it's so high.

yeah it looks like it,
the front bumper was cut and attacted to the cage for the front. also i found another pic of the back, so you can see how the original cage was cut. he wanted something there to help give a little protection to the motor. notice how the side mounts on the rear cage just directly above the brake drum. you can basicly see the others in the other pics above.

EDIT: i just realized i missed the pic of it in that catalog half way down. i'm blind, that looks to be it. thanks for the link also. :beer

I have two rollers, I have one 79(?) (yellow/black), and an 81.

If only I could find the right engine for it, I have every single part needed for the 79........I want an 899 triple in it.....

I had 2- 85 350's. They are fun, but where i live didn't work out as well as i thought. My issues were turning radius, garage space, tooo heavy to move around, & a pain in the butt to get in and out of. I took a little beating when i sold them.
