Picked up this project last sunday from the original owner for $1000 - the guy wanted $1800 - it has a recent split case rebuild, newer 300EX rear shock, new bearings all around, new fast trekker front's and trail claw II rear tires on aluminum .125 rims, and a new EBC clutch. Immediate restoration plans include - new plastic/graphics - possibly looking at Fullbore plastix fenders but because of cost ($250 each fender ) I'll probably go the Maier route, clutch cable, shockwears, uni-filter, handle-bars/grips, .190 Douglas rims (the .125's will disintigrate on the trails near me) and either a DG Xcellerator or FMF Megamax II exhaust. - wish me luck team. Its going to be quite a change going from the power and handling of my '90 LT250R to this mellow thumper but it might just be the best thing for my bad back - and don't count the little 250X out yet as a contender for the "stealth sleeper" of the year award - I'll work a little magic on the motor as soon a s funds and time allow.

I've only ever owned 1 Polaris, a 1996 400L sport bought new in late '95.

oooh ok, Tejas. I knew abotut he 400L but thoguht ya had a utility one also...

anyways: what do you think of that one (the L) ?

the quad im currently in the market for 99 or later Polaris Xplorer 400 4x4 has the same engine (give or take the front shaft...if youve got 4x4...itll be chains all around...but you dont )..its just a differant chassis. being a 400 liquad cooled 2 stroke...they supposedly fly!

Thanks,
Rob

Nice deal. You should pick up a pair of 250R a-arms and bolt them on for an easy +2 front end. Also think about some head work, the exaust ports are so small you can't get a pinky in them.

The 400L sport I had was one of the first ones off the assy. line in Minasota - the early Sports shared the same 37 Hp. Fuji/Wisconsen-Robin 378cc. mill as the Scramblers - the later '96's had a slightly de-tuned 36Hp. (diff. porting) motor. The 400L motor is actually a close copy of the later TRX250R mill and shares alot of the same engineering. As far as the 400L 4x4 goes, I was always partial to the non-xplorer models with the older style plastic but If you can, try and get a later model ('97? and up), they have a shaft front drive.

yep--99 and laters had shafts up front. Id also like to get the one with the pod headlight (handlebars light plus heads).
