I have been there twice. It is Killer. I am planneing to go in May of 03. I find if you go before school is out, the sand is in much better condition. When I was there in May of 01, there was just a few other people there the whole week. The wind was blowing, such that you could take off across the sand, and not see another track. The wind would wipe out my tracks so that on the way back it was also baby butt smooth. Some of the pics I have seen of the summertime there the sand was all rutted up.

i would imagine the first part or middle of june will be the earliest i could atempt to make it.

i was just there in august. i think the best time to go is during the week. if you dont get there by 8 on friday, you have no place to park or stay, plus, there's an average or 3 life flights a weekend out of there. the place is beautiful and the dunes are huge. theres free camping on the south side by the marsh. let me know if you get a bunch of ATCs together to go, i'll meet you there. i'm only 5 hours away and i'm shooting a new ATV film project this spring/summer.

When I was there last May, the only camping choice was really the privite place Sand Hills Resort. http://www.sandhillsresort.com/ The place is run by a old couple, Gene and Shirley. They are a little excentric, but good people. Just don't let your bike get on the grass.

The BLM was building a big campground at the Egan Lakes access, I do not know if it is finished and open yet. One of the Idaho local guys could probably tell you

Egan Lake is the best place to go for either camping or just day riding. They are mostly done with the camp area remodel an even if they aren't finished there is still camp area along the road. Also there is a trailer at the egan lake access that they sell suppliies etc. Can purchase Idaho yearly permit there also. You don't need to have an Idaho sticker to ride the dunes though. They accept current ones from all states. The motel in StAnthony does double rooms for about $40 and we always stay in there. Be sure to post when you will be going and at least a couple of us from Montana will make the trip down there.

i am from kansas and as for as i have ever known we don't have any kind of state sticker for atv's. what do u think will be needed for us to have access there? :)

All you need to ride there is a state sticker from any state for the current year. If you don't have one you can purchase them for idaho at the egan lake access. All you need is the vin # off the bike and it's description. They are $10 I live in Montana and buy the idaho stickers because they are $20 cheaper then Montana's and Montana honors them.

Just did a mapquest from my house to the resort, 19.5 hours!! Plus I'd have to go through Vegas so I am figuring more like 24 or so. You have no idea how bad I want to go! That thunder hill looks oh so sweet, I must go, I need a motorhome :( I am going to try and put some plans together and with a little bit of luck I might see you guys there ;)
