2 months is a long time to wait to post, and I think this is going to keep a lot of trike newbies away from this forum and really limit this forums growth. Maybe one month would be better? Oh well, sucks that there is so much spam in forums to have to resort to this.

It really isn't that bad, and the areas you can't access right away isn't anything special. Anything you can do in the restricted areas you can do in the "newbie" section, it just isn't broken down in categories as much.

Either way, welcome to the site and enjoy your stay =).

I'm not an admin, but you're more than welcome to post at the link below, even though it is a new user section, a lot of members still watch for posts there including myself.

Hi, I've been a member on 3ww for a few years now. Never got around to posting anything. Wanted to say thanks for such an awesome sight. I ride a 86 250r, a 83 200x I converted to a 185 auto x, because my wife didn't like the kicker and clutch from the stock motor. It's nice to have a place to go to for ideas and technical support

So, when the rule says "10 total posts," does that mean 10 new threads or do replies to existing threads in the new member area count towards the 10?

Either works fine. A new thread counts as a post as well. As of this post you have the 10 already, it is the number under your location.

the thing i worry about with the 2 month waiting period is that I joined this forum because i need help with a specific problem and I just worry about how often 'experienced' members, that are the ones who could really help me, visit the 'newbie' section. I dont want to wait 2 months to get an answer so that i can get my trike going.

not trying to say that I wont get the help i need just being in the 'newbie' section. I just think i would get more help in the specific sections. I am glad to be here!

New member. Not the end of the world with these restrictions guys. The info, parts, etc. that can be accessed here are worth it. Think about all of the benefits available here for free to anyone. We should probably just accept the guidelines and thank the folks responsible for making this site run.....for free.... I bought some parts from a guy here and he suggested I leave feedback for him. I can't because of these rules. But, the sun still came up the next morning. I still got my parts. I will go back after I have served my time and leave him some feedback. Just one old guys opinion. No intention of ruffling and feathers or anything. But it is their site, so they can run it in any manner they wish. I would have to guess that these rules make good sense to the folks that have been running this site for many years.

Long time lurker, have a question. First, an intro...
I have enjoyed many three wheelers through the years starting in 83 on a Honda 1981 200, then my Dad had bought a new 200m in 84. Then I bought an 83 250R when I was about 17ish. Since then I have had KLT200, ATC125m for my son at the time and a pair of 250ES big reds. I have kept my 86 250ES, and swear I will die with it. I have had a Rhino, 800 CAN AM renegade and other toys including many many snowmachines. My first love is that big red however!

My question... I picked up a ba$tardized 225DR trike/quad conversion that was rough but I was looking for mostly the drive train for a golf cart swap. I didn't want to cut up a good trike. Anyway, I drove it into the garage and over time fit it in the golf cart. When it was time to run it I had no spark. I ohmed the stator to find it was out... odd since I drove it in the garage months before. I rebuilt the stator replacing the two coils and had a weak spark, but it ran (and ohmed out within spec). Then I pulled a complete rookie move and welded a bracket forgetting the key on with the battery attached. Now no spark. I figured I smoked the CDI and bought another one from a regular 225DX (non reverse). I matched wire for wire and plugged it in. No spark. I am at my wits end. Stator still ohms out properly. Any ideas?

OK; now I get it.... guess I should have dug a little deeper before I sent our administrator a dumb question.!!!!! Thanks Billy!!!!

In an effort to help new members familiarize themselves with the site and some of our habits here we've introduced a trial period for new registrations. During this trial period you'll be limited to this forum, the Introduction forum, and also Site/Feedback section if your having problems. Veteran members will be available to help answer questions, and you'll still be able to search and read in other portions of the site but you will be limited to posting in these areas only. Full access to post in the rest of the site is of course still 100% free. We only ask now that you spend some time in these areas first and learn more about the site first before we turn you completely loose. Those requirements are:

A registration time of 2 months or more.
At least 10 total posts on the forum. If you had existing posts before this was implemented, they will count towards your total. If you are new, then you'll need a total of 10 posts in the three above mentioned area before your given access to post elsewhere.

Again, you are still available to read all of the other existing threads and posts on the site, you just are not able to reply to them or make new threads until these requirements have been met.

Thanks for your patience and glad to have you here at 3WW! :)

Well, finally to post #10. Now, I just need to wait 2 months to see the rest of the site I am blocked from. I thought it was odd there was not a members classified/for sale section. I have been here for awhile just reading posts and learning how to work on my bikes.

Front and rear suspension is completely shot. Rear wheel bearings are almost non-existent, triple bearings have a ton of play, tires are bald, front break doesn't work, rear break rez is broken...

Idiot kid I bought it from had put "dual exhaust" on it, and by dual exhaust I mean he hacked that head pipe with possibly a Dremel, slip on clamped a y pipe and then put two slip on mufflers that are, I kid you not, zip tied to hold them on. The second melted a hole it the airbox and something had rubbed through the pipe so the exhaust has a big whole in it.

Come to think of it, many of the parts are held on by zip ties. Headlights, tail light, exhaust, etc.

This 18 yo kid advertised this beast as in excellent condition. He claimed to work as a motorcycle mechanic and bragged about his custum work. I asked him before and after I gave him the money, " come on dude, level with me, what all is wrong with it" and with a straight face he said nothing. Ha, kids, whatever. Anyway, the motor ran strong and all the gear worked so I bought it, so as of today...

I am planning on extending the swingarm 3 or 4 inches before installation of it and 350 shock. I am hoping someone on here makes or sells the modified linkage required. Since I have an 83 I don't even have the original linkage to get measurements and fab one and I would rather just buy one anyway.

I also have read what seems to be conflicting info in the front end swap. I have read everything from straight swap to you gotta change the neck, the races, the bearing, it'll need shimming plus a new steering stop.

I have arbitrarily decided that a new bearing set and maybe a shim will make it work, we'll see. Also, granted, this is more down the road but I and curious whether these Chinese zongshang it whatever 250cc ohc motors are direct bolt ins. I have seen it implied in multiple ways but I have never read anyone saying yeah, I did that and it is. Any thoughts?

I think I probably got my 10 so I'll finish this up by justifying myself a little.
Why am I extending the swingarm? Well because I'm a big dude, about 6'4" and 240. I've already put risers and higher bars on it. Both the front and rear suspension will be higher. I'll probably put a thicker seatpad on it and seat what can be done with peg positioning. I'm stretching the whole bike out so to speak. Yes, I know I should have a 350 at my size but I don't. It was an impulse buy and this is what I got, hell or high water. Oh, and what do you guys think about a supertrapp slip on? I had one on my xr so I'm nostalgic for them. Also at my size and weight I'm considering just increasing the spring weight front and rear but would rather not if it isn't necessary.

Thanks for listening, tomorrow I'll check and see if I have full access yet and any feedback you fellas want to give me.

Woot, tricky though when you need technical help fast and existing threads dont exist.

I'm also wondering the same thing.If you post your question in 'New Member Discussion', the rest of us will see it and someone can help you.

You are encouraged to ask as many questions as you like starting right now. Just please start a new thread and there's a greater chance that someone familiar with your specific machine will see the post and answer you.

If you need parts, you can post a 'want to buy' thread (post) in new member discussion and it will be seen by everyone on the site as well so chances are you'll get a response on that fairly quickly too.

Posting gibberish/junk text is counted as spam, pretty sure that's not acceptable, if it was, then what's the point of having a 10 post limit in the first place.

Hello, I just joined as I am working through converting an 83 ATC 200E into a hardtail motorcycle. I have 2 ATC 200E's that I bought for cheap and I am going to try and keep the one that is the most complete together while converting the other.

This is what I am starting with:251031

And this is my conversion inspiration:251030251032251033

I have two questions to begin:
1. Are there any detailed instructions/pictures on converting a front hub into a rear with a sprocket?
2. Has anyone used the rear axle as a jackshaft so they could maintain use of the rear brake? I see issues with where the chain from the gearbox would meet the axle hub but if that has been modified easily before, it could really simplify the jackshaft and brake assembly. Plus I like reusing parts where I can. Let me know!

I'll keep posting questions and pictures as I move along with the build.

Happy to be here!

New to the site. Excited to have access to so much info! Currently I have a 1984 Honda 200m and a 1985 Honda 200s. Both run great and I've literally been sucked into the 3 wheeler world. (No pun intended) These are so much fun to drive! Quick question that I haven't been able to get info on.

For my 200s... If I wanted to get some more power out of the motor what would be suggested? I'm looking for some real feedback on bolt on parts and also how well they worked. I'm also looking long term. I might want to change the piston, etc,etc. How many people have upgraded engine parts on their 200 and does it make a huge difference? I'm just looking to start researching my future plan so I can research, start purchasing parts, etc.

Thanks,

I thought the same when I first joined [recently] but it dawned on me quickly, it's a good thing. It keeps the one timers from mucking up the whole site. Lots of people join places like this only to solve their one or two problems then are never heard from again. That doesn't contribute anything to the community as a whole. Just start a new thread and describe your issue, quite a few people check both new member and old member sections. Also don't forget to post what year your 185S is, sometimes there's different specs or changes year to year. This section is pretty much a generic talk about anything for new members, atleast how I see it.

Think I have 11 posts now lol when do I get to see/use the classifieds!?!?

To know there's a lot to think about, I know it's wicked confusing and misleading and there's a lot of math involved.

Basically, get a calculator. Ask your calculator "Calculator, have I reached the ten minimum post count of this forum?" See what it says, if it says anything.

Then ask the calculator, "Calculator, have I been a member of this forum for two months?" See what it says to that, once again, if it says anything.

If it doesn't reply to either question, then you'll have to continue to wait until it tells you it's OK. Usually it's two months and ten posts, but we've actually put a restriction on your account so your probationary period is longer. It's all up to the calculator now.

Since we are on the topic of becoming a "full" member, another side effect is once you meet the requirements, it can take up to like a day for the server to run an update to update your status to a full member. It's not an instant thing.

Also yea that math is a bit hard. I come from a programming background, so the problem looks more like:

if($member['posts'] >= 10 && $member['daysMemberFor'] >= 60){ // 10 posts AND 2 months)
$member++;
}

However there's a fair chance someone could read the first post and get the wrong logic applied like this:

if($member['posts'] >= 10 || $member['daysMemberFor'] >= 60){ // 10 posts OR 2 months
$member++;
}

If you know C/Java then you can follow along, other wise it's just jumbled text for you =). Well I guess really it's more PHP because of the $ vars, I've done too much programming, can't even keep the langs straight.

Hey! I’m new to the site kind of I’ve always come on here looking at stuff but I just got my first trike and I’m doing a rebuild so I’m going to have some questions so I registered. Does anyone know what front brake calipers are interchangeable on the ‘84 atc 250r? Or where do I need to post to ask about that? Thanks.

You can post in this forum. Near the top left of the page it will say "Post New Thread". Click on that then enter the title of your post like "Any 84 250r brake caliper options?".

A 200x front caliper is the same with “your bracket” but whatever you do DONT fall for the $80+ dollar new caliper on eBay.... it’s a $20-30 dollar China caliper he’s reselling. The caliper is fine though but don’t spend $80 on it. He always lists it as the last one, believe me it’s not:p

The China bike it fits they’re about $20 (sometimes cheaper)
I’m not saying buy a Chinese one but they are out there.

I agree , 2 months is a long time !!!!!

I think the 2 month requirement was lowered a bit. It's been a while since the update post though.

I've been looking into new wheels for 1985 250SX. Want to run with a 10x5 Polished front wheel to get a taller Narrower look with a Maxxis RAZAR2 23x7-10 front tire but have read a lot of different wheel offsets or unknown's. (I am leaning towards 4/110, 10x5, 2.0+3.0 offsets polished. And on the rear thinking of 4/110, 10x10, 5.0+5.0 or 3.0+6.0 offsets polished with 20x11-10 ITP HOLESHOT Rear Tire. If someone has any knowledge on this or completed similar build I could use some information on it.

Ihave hovered on this site for a number of years made a few posts and always gotten good info.
Today is no different. I have a 1980 185atc. It needs rings and I have bought 2 sets that and said to be a fit but do not.
I have read the only real solution is to swap out jug and piston. Id rather not but if I must, I just want it back in the woods. Any help is appreciated. A link would be great.

You'd be best off creating a new thread so the topic is focused on your atc185. There's several people that know a ton about rebuilding engines, should be able to get their eyes on the post then.

hey yall, my Honda ATC 25SX A is producing 36V to the battery.. AND it WAS producing 4.4V-AC to the headlamp back when the battery was taking 12VDC

You'd probably be best to start a new thread.

The voltages don't really make any sense though, if the battery was showing 36v the acid would be boiling hard. 4.4v is super low. Headlights and battery are effectively on the same wiring besides some switches. The 250SX outputs AC to the voltage regulator, and that rectifies it to DC power for the battery which is what you'd be measuring the voltages in if that wasn't clear. If you try to measure the AC voltage you'll be measuring the rectified AC that's above the DC voltage which is normal on those machines. On a car AC leakage there's a limit for how much is acceptable, I've never seen a spec for that on the atv side of things though. To much AC leakage is normally a bad voltage regulator though.

So when i checked the headlamp it was 4.4VAC but 3ish VDC cant remember, the battery was doing fine at that point too. the Neutral light and the headlamp flickered a bit then didnt come back on so im not sure what i should look at, im assuming a new rectifier/regulator

(edit: when i last checked it was about a month and a half ago, i havent been able to mess around with my bike for a few weeks, but i was today and this is where im stumped, because back then the Black wire that leads up to the left cluster also had 70VDC)(edit2: this machine is really confusing me)

Is your meter battery low or something, the readings are all over and don't make any sense. On the yellow wires directly from the engine if you disconnect them and hooked your meter to them, you'd hit 70V AC pretty easily. If you're getting those kinds of voltages after the regulator, then the voltage regulator sounds fried and it's just passing through the rectified DC unregulated, so idle it would have low voltage, rev'ed up it would increase. I've never ran into a bad regulator/rectifier for a stock Honda, but I have tried to wire up regulator/rectifier from China to a 350x and blew out the voltage regulator instantly (they couldn't get me any specs, so figured it was worth a shot). It still got rectified DC through but there was no limits, so i easily hit 70v ac. Hooking a couple head lights up to it at idle it did ok, give it any gas at all and it blew them though.

At the head light, green is the ground (same as frame ground as well as battery ground), white is for dim, blue for bright. The power feed from the ignition switch is what powers the lights, and that comes from the regulator/battery. Probably wouldn't hurt to grab a service manual for the wire diagram, but kind of sounding like a blown out regulator/rectifier, big time if it's blown out the headlights easily. Careful with a battery hooked up to that thing with it being like that, it can boil and spark and explode. There was a member on here quite a few years ago that had a garage fire that if I remember right was deemed to be caused from the battery (possibly shorted maybe?). Either case, when voltages aren't right, be very leery of the machine. Long long ago my dad had an old junk battery he was trying to charge to bring back to life and it caused a nice explosion, luckily no one was near it. Lead acid is normally pretty safe, but in just the right situations they can be dangerous and over voltage and over current are two of the main concerns.
