1985 atc 250r electrical questions

I have an 85 honda 250r. Ran fine until the transmission siezed. (wanted to upgrade anyways) Put an 86 250r (bored to 310) powervalve engine on it and am having issues getting a spark. It still has the 85 wire harness and cdi unit and all of that stuff from 85. Ive kicked it a couple times and have seen a spark (rarely) but cannot get it to start. Any ideas? or does the 85 cdi not work for it cause I know there is minor differences between the 2 years and the cdi's are wired differently but I dont think this should matter? I have had a couple of my friends with trikes look at it and it still sits. Any help please Thanks

Is the stator from the 85 engine or the 86? If it's the one that came with the 86, swap 'em. They're interchangeable but based on what you wrote, that's the only thing that changed electronically.

Definitely check your stator and connections. Pull the flywheel to see whats up.
