okay so i am completely rebuilding a 1985 Tecate KXT... when i bought it the bike was in pieces and the carb was filthy with scum and Permatex all over everything... i cleaned it but it has a 300 main jet... thats not stock, i believe stock main jet size is 260... i have options.. what do you guys think the best side is for my Tecate? 240, 250, 260(stock), 270 or 280?? I would rather not run a 300 because that would cause the motor to run much to rich and i def don't wanna change the plugs every ride cuz they're fouled.... Also i noticed there was not a scratch on the cylinder walls or piston. Guy i bought it from says it was raced. The kicker gear was just replaced. He did it in my driveway so i knew it was new and i have a complete gasket rebuild kit. ill get to that after this carburetor is finished. My needle is slightly S shaped but i will be trying it to see if it runs rich or not, if not i will keep it, otherwise i am going to replace it. As far as reeds, i haven't taken the cage off yet to see whats going on in there. Ill be posting pics soon.

What other set ups is everyone else running and what kind of trike??

what has been done as far as the exhuast and air filter? with a pipe and pod filter a 300 jet is right in the range

I agree with Ben! Also might wanna check your flywheel and if its still stock, send it to jeswinehart to get refurbed so it doesnt fly apart and take out your stator. That'll save you some headaches that are sure to happen at some point if they havent already to the PO. As far as you needle being S shaped, Id check for a rebuild kit and just do the whole carb and eliminate some guess work then do the fine tuning. I run weisco piston and rings and havent and problems but it is just like anything else, do you maint. and treat it right and youll be ok. Race it, mix it to lean and beat the crap out of it and youll have constant problems. I got mine in the same condition as you did, am still working out bugs years later. I did my first rebuild on it with out 3WW because Im old school and didnt believe in needing a computer, so you will be better than me. Good luck! Im getting ready to do mine all over again, the right way....

Very nice work guys. And yes stock pipe and filter but I will be upgrading at some point but it is race bored and not sure on piston but new and very clean. I have no idea as far as flywheel though, it looks old. Roughly how much did you spend on your flywheel?
I bought the stock jet just in case. 260

What do you do to it? I am a machinist.

but it is race bored

Race bored eh? Watch out with that thing then...

Like the other guys have told you, if there is an aftermarket pipe on there then it's been jetted to run right with that pipe. A 300 sounds like roughly the size jet you would expect to see on a Tecate with an aftermarket pipe and a, um, "race bore".

11-06-2011, 04:23 PM
what is the number on the top of the piston? I'm think you meant or (were given bad info) race port) post detailed pics of the cylinder on the intake side and exhaust and we tell you if we spot a port job

STiForester
11-06-2011, 06:04 PM
Ok. I just took a look and I don't see any over bore. I haven't taken the piston out yet. And I ordered 250,260,270,280, & 290 jets. Stock pipe and they cut the silencer off of it and put a fmf silencer on with a hose clamp. Looks rigged I will be replacing that in the near future. I will be posting pics. I think the previous owner put a 300 in thinking it would be faster... But just runs rich with no pipe. I took the airbox out and I will be running open filter most likely. Haven't decided if im going to put it back in yet. I have new jet needle, gasket set, jets, clutch cable coming. Just put new msr bars on it.

STiForester
11-06-2011, 06:18 PM
IVe been thinking. And I should prolly pull the flywheel and do it... I don't want it breaking

fabiodriven
11-06-2011, 07:49 PM
The first thing you're going to want to do is get rid of that stock pipe. They choke the poor Tecate to death.

I would recommend leaving the airbox in the bike. Removing it is not going to gain you a whole lot and you'll be very susceptible to sucking water in the intake.

STiForester
11-06-2011, 07:55 PM
yes true but for now until i clean the mud out of it it'll have to stay that way. what pipe would you guys recommend?

DG worked good for me

jeswinehart
11-06-2011, 08:14 PM
Ryan, if you run open filter (which is perfectly fine), be sure to support/secure the carb and/or filter in one fashion or another.
As it is now, you are relying on a 20 plus year old intake boot that in Tecate world has a proven history to crack and suck air, even when the are secured by factory air box.
I reproduce those intake boots, and guarantee them too, but with no support ~ warranty void.

P.S. - if you click the links in my previous post it shows what I do with flywheels. I am sure you may have some good ideas along similar lines you could come up with at your shop.

If you got the funds a Jemco is a great pipe, thinking around $370 and its better than a dg. This is on my husbands (84t3) x-mas list and he has told me how bad he NEEDS one!!

fabiodriven

Ryan, if you run open filter (which is perfectly fine)

I have an open filter on my R and you can't even go near puddles with it. It sucks water immediately. Just my .02

DG worked good for me

I personally didn't like the DG when I had it on my bike, but others have said they like it fine.

STiForester
11-06-2011, 08:24 PM
hmmm very good point^^^^ and yea i couldn't locate a boot for it so i had to seal the cracks with permatex... you said you have boots?

There is a hole in the clutch cover that I need to weld before I can put the gasket on and full her up and kick her over

STiForester

So I just dropped off my clutch cover to be welded and my gaskets and clutch cable have arrived. I'll be making an album soon. I'll keep you posted

I strongly recomend having jeswinehart do your flywheel over, $50 will save you hundreds down the road, and get an intake boot while your at it, you dont want to suck air and blow it up.

Swinger
11-11-2011, 09:43 AM
While you have it torn down make sure to check all bearings and seals in the motor. I would just get a whole kit and be done with it. That is what Im in the process of doing to mine right now but one thing leads to another and got a few things that need touched up. Take your time and do it right the first time so you dont have to do it again any time soon. Good luck

STiForester
11-11-2011, 01:46 PM
Yes this is true. Thanks guys. I'm def interested in a new boot and having the flywheel done.

STiForester
11-11-2011, 01:47 PM
What material is the clutch cover made out of? Die cast aluminum correct?

STiForester
11-17-2011, 11:39 AM
Ok so I got the Cover welded and the bike put back together. Needs a new kicker gear cuz the teeth are messed up and it
Slips. Everything else is ready to go. Carb doesn't leak and everything is cleaned thoroughly.

12-12-2011, 02:23 PM
Ok so I know it's been about a month and a half and I was gonna part it out. The CDI box is good just had a bad ground. I got it to start first kick. Also needed another kicker gear... I'm waiting on a #260 main jet and an exhaust gasket. I can't get it to change idle. Only idles really high and worries me. Any suggestions? It was spitting fuel out of the exhaust port all over the pipe. Ps I have 116 vp gas in it

fabiodriven
12-12-2011, 02:57 PM
Why were you going to part it out?

The high idle is more than likely a vacuum leak from somewhere. Are you running the Mikuni carb? If so, check this out- http://www.3wheelerworld.com/showthread.php/135054-Intermittent-Death-Rev?highlight=

STiForester
12-12-2011, 03:09 PM
I didnt have the money to get a new stator and CDI box and redo the flywheel. But now that it runs I'm just prolly gonna keep it and restore slowly one piece at a time. I was just iffy if it was ever gonna run without dumping $ into it. Runs super rich and the plug is wet so I got a 260 jet on the way. Came in pieces with rust and permatex in the carb an had a 300 jet instead of 260(stock) But whatever. I got it all back together with a new kicker again and it runs strong. Almost broke my leg on the kick lol. Started first kick tho. Put a smile on my face.

STiForester
12-12-2011, 03:14 PM
Yea and my carb boot I had to permatex cuz its cracked everywhere

campdrew
12-13-2011, 07:35 PM
If it won't idle down no matter what you do, it would seem to me that it's runing lean. Having a crack in the boot/ removing the airbox are going to cause it to be lean. If you think it's running rich, check to see that you have some freeplay in the throttle cable and that the slide is going all the way down in the carb.

STiForester
12-14-2011, 09:02 AM
Yea I wanna order a new boot. And I have the needle at factory 3rd slot. By it had a 300 jet. I'm gonna go to 260 and fix the boot and see if it's any better. If I turn the screw left or right will it raise or lower idle? Which way is which.

fabiodriven
12-14-2011, 09:23 AM
Right (in) raises it and left (out) lowers it.

STiForester
12-14-2011, 10:29 AM
Thanks. That's all I needed to know. I'm pretty sure its a stock pipe I have to check. The muffler is and answer.

STiForester
12-15-2011, 12:26 AM
the exhaust isnt stock and the bike was raced so im gonna keep the Aftermarket exhaust and 300 jet and needle groove just to see if the intake boot makes a difference.... also i dont think my slide is going all the way down either i may have to slack it up

so fresh 93 octane with a 32:1 mixture.... and new intake boot... other than that its ready to go.... well se if its still running rich and ill go down to a #290 jet if not maybe a 280 jet.... i looked and it does have port work done i can see... guy who had it before says he thinks its at least .20 over.... but i have no idea. hmmmm we shall see soon as the intake boot gets here

You are very welcome.

P.S. that wide radiator hose clamp will ruin your new intake boot. It will cut in on the bottom side over a (short) period of time, just like it would on a original o.e.m. one.
You might want to put a shout out for a oem one or look up BMW hose clamps, they use barrow clamps on some of BMW cars (forget who told me that)

yea most def.... when i got it, it was a rolling frame with not even working rear brakes... motor in pieces in a trash bag and all the bolts and hardware arent correct size and they were all in a muddy bucket... its coming together very well for the little i have spent on it.... your building the 350x right? coming along very nice ive been keeping up with it

hell yea! def worth it when you look at it before and after!! let me know if you need helo looking for parts, im laways willling to track stuff down! dont give up on that 350! thats my next buy once i learn a thing or two about 4 strokes

Do you have all the plastics for your build?

STiForester
12-21-2011, 01:28 AM
Yea it came with them but there all white and falling apart. Chel my profile For all the pics. Right now I'm collecting parts and putting together to make sure it runs 100% than its tear down and sand blast and paint and all! Yah thats where im at,getting the running gear and getting all of the little things to get it so it runs and is a complete controllable chassis. Then cosmetics....ive been religiously surfing ebay...lol...I think youll love 4 strokes, the torque is AWESOME!Ive been on both and prefer 2 strokes for bikes and 4 stroke for anything else. Those plastics look like theyve been in the weather oxidizing for YEARS!I love seeing rescues like these!

STiForester
12-21-2011, 01:48 AM
Yea it sat in some guys farm who said he used to race it in the 80's. The plastics turn your hands white if you touch them ha. Runs tho just to the last point of getting the jetting right. I may be able to find parts super cheap for your bike local and I can ship them for cheaper than a company. I'll keep my eyes open.

STiForester

Ok so with the new boot it idle great just need the air filter to fatten theixture up a bit so it runs good at half to 3/4 throttle. Will be updating after x mas. Once I know the bugs are worked out. Motor comes back out and bike gets torn down for new bearings and a sandblast and possibly powder coat. I have a sandblaster at work
