1985 with a long list of problems, one I am most concerned about is the shifter will not return when pushed down, guessing a broken return spring- do I need to split the engine to fix this? Only four stroke I ever owned was a yamaha raptor and I never had to tear that engine apart. I drove 2.5 hours to get this pig, cant wait to get it driveable.

Looks in decent shape, how much did you pay?

I almost bought an sx like that but didn't follow thru.

The guy had a spring mounted on the outside and it did work that way
but I was too c.s. to buy it.

I had an 85 br that had a hanging up shifter and it turned out that the shifter itself was hanging up on the case.
NOT real obvious at all, the shifter simply wouldn't return.

Let me know if you can't get to the 'search' key and I'll try to look for some answers for you.
Free manuals in the world class help section btw.

Will it shift normally if you reach down and pull it back up?
Shifter rubbing on the case?
shifter loose on the shaft?
so...?? you can pull up and get into first and 2nd etc? but you downshift once and it's a one trick pony?
unless you reach down or pull up with your toe? and then press down again to get to a lower gear?
will it clunk into the next lower gear of you do that?

Have faith, these machines are just so worth having.
Those rear fenders alone are worth 300$ at least from what I've seen.
Front fender, best part of 100$.

Wish I had a ready answer for you but we'll get it.
Someone who's done one will surely chime in here pretty soon.

I think we have 7 of these things and could not run the farm without them.
There's nothing better for our needs.

These videos will keep you interested in getting your br back in shape.
There is simply nothing more capable, IMO.

Thanks for the replies, I bought this last Saturday for $200 and have been working on it all week when I have free time. The shifter problem was fixed by turning the clutch adjustment, the jam nut is missing and the screw is turned all the way out, may need a new clutch soon. Rear brake shoe linings crumbled when I pulled them out, front brake shoes were fine but after I adjusted them I pulled the lever the cable snapped, starter button is missing/ choke lever is busted off, air filter was destroyed and the boot was off of the air box to carb, all tires leak, one wheel is wasted, battery is shot, starter was not working till I nursed it back to life. So I spent close to $225 in parts today to get the old girl safe and reliable, I don't think I am going to keep it, I might off in the spring and buy one in better condition, I hate having run down machines but this is all I can afford right now. One more thing, the kid I bought this from said it was idling really high, so high I wouldn't put it in gear. When I pulled the cover off the side of the carb there was no slack in the cable and with the adjustments all the way in for most slack it was still 1/4 to 1/3 throttle? Looked like a stock cable, my guess it was a 86 throttle cable someone put on?

These machines clean up nice with money. I need a side cover, fork boots, and tool box which should be here tomorrow and I will be happy till I put new fenders on it.

Thanks for the comments, we'll see how it does pulling the ice shanty this winter, might keep it if it does the job. I rode it for the first time over the weekend, nothing like the tri-z I owned years ago, its a little tippy with those balloon tires and high center of gravity.

It's homemade, type in ice fishing in the search, there's a recent thread on this topic where I posted pics.
