i had the same problem with my 85 ended up being a corroded ground connection. so look over all your connections before you start throwing parts at it.

there is a lighting coil in the stator also the is a charging rectifier that can go bad as well, so you will need to check each part before buying a new one, or you might throw 100$ on ebay away and still need to spend another 100 before it's fixed. Go here and you can order some of the parts new. http://www.hondapartshouse.com/honda-parts.aspx?aribrand=HOM#/Honda/ATC250SX_A_%2886%29_ALL-TERRAIN_VEHICLE_%28ATV%29%2c_JPN%2c_VIN%23_JH3TE04 2-GM100011_TO_JH3TE042-GM111920/WIRE_HARNESS_%2b_BATTERY/ATC250SX-86-JPN-A/2Y14HA6FBHA619AA

I can't imagine what else we could be missing.
I do know that they do not need a battery even dead in the circuit, to run.

I think there's only one fuse but not sure about that either.
These things are so dependable, even with like 10 of the 250 models in various stages of
destruction, I rarely have to fool with them at all.

Ohm the stator coil, thanks to mm.
The specs are in there.

Older models had stator mounting issues and rust under the flywheel
but not too common on these.

Did you check the voltage TO the battery when it's running? I'd assume so.
I had a battery with a bad internal plate that was shorted out.
Never woulda guessed THAT as a prob.

so, yeah, the headlight should work fairly well at idle and above with NO battery
in the trike at all.
I have 2 like that.
Neutral light should glow too.
