I have a 1986 Big Red that I picked up and got to checking it out and it has a grease packed rearend. Why would someone do that? Any ideas, any help would be appricated. Thanks wrecker704

You mean, a grease gun fitting on the rear axle?

No, pull filler plug and the grease is in the readend.

I'm thinking someone couldnt keep oil in it due to bad seals, take it apart and see what condition the seals are in, you gotta get that grease out anyways.

That sounds like a tough job to take the rearend apart. Will the grease hurt it? How bad of a job is it?

Is it hard to get the grease out and inspect the seals?

If you plan on making any long rides on it I would think that the gearcase would get hot. The grease will not lubricate like the oil will. I have not pulled my diff out of my red, but it doesnt look like it would be to hard. Once you get it out clean it with parts cleaner or gasoline and put new seals in it.
