I'm thinking about doing an oil change on my big red today and was wondering what kind of oil I should use. Should I use honda 4 stroke oil or what?

I just changed my ATC 250 ES Big Red the other day with Havoline straight 30 weight oil. Not sure on the recommended oil for it, but it has about 1.5 trillion miles on it it seems...lol so I figured the thicker oil wouldnt hurt it.

I always used honda oil,but I always heard straight 30 is a good oil to run in anything especially if you don't know what oil was in it before. It shouldn't damage the engine, switching a engine from straight 30, to detergant oil is a bad idea, but the other way around is fine.

the oil needs to meet JASO-MA specs to be safe for your wet clutch that our ATCs use.

Honda oil is great, any ATV or motorcycle spec oil will work. just look for JASO-MA

Valvoline ATV oil works great

Use the Yamalube 15/40 its for aircooled engines and has the same heat rating as mopar turbo 15/40 oil SH. Turbo motors run very hot due to high compression and so due aircooled engines. I made a mistake of using water cooled 4 stroke engine oil and it broke down to a water like fluid and took out the thrustwashers on the lowercrank on my 200x. Thats when I learned about heat ratings. In the last 8 years the government has tinkered with the SAE Ratings on all the oil so it was and is still difficult to figure out what oil is good to day. The Two I mentioned I no works.
The Government 8years ago made the oil companys take out the zinc and phosphorus for pollution reasons. Doing this has destoryed many engines and they really didn't tell anybody what they did. At a Chrysler Dealership I worked at I figured it out once they started playing with the SAE Ratings. We cooked oils and froze oils till we figured what we were going to put in our own cars/machines.

castroil GTX 10w30 works pretty good, but synthetic is better, although a little more expensive, it doesn't get thick when cold.
