My Big Red shifts good but shift lever has alot of play in it. Just doesnt seem as firm as it should. Anybody know where I should start?

If the shift lever is loose on the shifter shaft, be careful.
They can strip the splines on each other.
More commonly, the shift lever will strip before the shaft does.

I've heard of people widening the space that the pinch bolt closes so it can bite tighter.
Not sure if they do it with a hacksaw blade or what.

New shift levers are pretty cheap and available at almost any bike shop.
Glad you got to thinking about it before it got too bad.
Someone else may have a better idea
or
see if the search key works, trying words like 'shifter loose' or similar.

I agree 100% When the shifter lever is loose on the shaft, I pull the shift lever off and use a air cut off disk to open the gap up. This works good for a temporary fix.

Now if your shift lever is tight on the shaft, then you probably have internal issues.
