Hello.
Right, im Andy, I notice a lot of you are in the usa, im im the uk.
Ive just bought a atc 125m for a bit of winter fun, didnt realise it had parts missing tho! Its a rolling chassis but i have engines from monkey bikes and pit bikes im gonna fab one of them in it.
the main problem is the rear axle, have any one got a picture of all the axle parts disassembled? ive seen the exploded diagrams but would like to see some actual parts,...
Ile explain what i have and what the problem is. i have both wheels and hubs, the axle, the barings are in the frame, i have the sprocket all bolted on fine, i have the brake shoes sat in fine and the drum its self but i seem to be missing a cover that goes over that??
There seems a lot of play in the axle from side to side, if i push the axle fully in from the chain side it sits nice but the drum cover wont go all the way on as its sat on the axle splines are far as it will go...

Any help would be good, hope im making sense!!

I have one with the cover missing but it seems to work,

See if you can get a shop manual from the world class help section.
I just went thru a 90 rear axle last summer but forget the bearing preload and shim stuff.

Will try to take a pic for you but there will be *&^% to pay if I don't do the family thing.

It sounds to me like you dont have the axle tightened up in the carrier, there is a nut that will lock it down. They go on the brake drum side, I would get the cover if I was you but if you wanna ride it before you can get one then make sure you tighten the two nuts down on the drum side. There is a reason that the cover goes on there, as it has a rubber seal around the outside and a dust seal on the inside over the axle. I can look and see if I have one out at the farm but I have no idea what shipping would be to you from here

I see what your saying with the 2 nuts but thats not the problem! the thread doesnt go all the way. basically once the drum is slotted on as far as it can go there is still a lot of play in the shaft! ile try and get some pics. the length from the sprocket to the hub is pre determind and it seems to be an inch more than it needs to be! unless theres some spacers missing

its as tho the sprocket and its mount is not in the right place, can that be moved ?

is it possible that you have the sprocket flipped the wrong way on the splines?

more than likely missing spacers or the wrong axle, have you looked at the manual yet? If you ask Monroe Mike really nice he might post the link for you as the previous link he posted no longer works

the sprocket is on right im sure as there is a washer bit that slots into the bearing.
I havent looked at the manual yet...
Ile get some pictures of the situation up and you can see whats goin on.

right, until i get chance to take some pics, heres an axle pic identical to mine

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/85-HONDA-ATC125-M-REAR-AXLE-AND-SPROCKET-/400233032982?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item5d2fbf6d16

this slides in from the left as your stood behind the bike. On the other side it comes out between the brake shoes. I put the drum on until it goes to the end of the splines. This is where the problem starts, the shaft has about an inch of left and right movement! If i put the 2 nuts on after the drum it makes no difference as the drum is as far as it will go.
is there something to go on once the shaft is in and before the drum goes on?

Sorry to be a pain!

i really don't know for sure, but i'm curious if yours could be an 86/87 125 axle? might take a few measurements and post them up for someone to compare to theirs. measure end to end, end to inner splines/threads (both sides) and spline to threads (center). pics with axle and tape measure if possible would be would be best. i don't have an extra axle just laying around or i'd go measure it myself and my 125 is put up for winter already. really don't want to have to dig it back out.

nice mini collection you have. :beer

I dont know enough about these things to know the differences between models. Ask me about honda dax's and thats a different story! Ile take some measurements tomorrow and some pics and get them up.
Youd be a massive help if you could do some comparing measurements. Its bloody hard to get bits for these things in the UK.

Theres about 9 or 10 monkey bikes there, not all mine, there friends too. this is my baby, 76 honda dax. 140 cc

I've been pondering all night and am starting to wonder if that could be an axle off of a 185's or 200 that you have there. I haven't had my 125m apart as there has been no need to yet, and have not done the rear bearings in my wife's 81 200, so couldn't tell you if the P.O. could have put the wrong axle in there. I do worry about the fact that you can slide the axle in and out with out a press of dead blow hammer. Those should be press fit bearings and that kind of slip movement will indicate your axle is wore out. Now I may be wrong as I have yet to have the luxury of pulling a honda axle, but all the yamaha ones I have pulled were press fit in.

thanks to those who have put some ideas forward! ive sorted it now in a fashion. Ive had to make a large spacer but ive sacrifices the rear brake... which isnt a problem as its only a snow thrasher. It has to be the wrong axle.

If you ut the spacer on the outside of the brake drum can you tighten it up or does it require a spacer in between the drum and brakes?

andy_sheff
01-01-2012, 03:35 PM
it requires a spacer between the bearing and the drum

then I have a feeling that it's the wrong axle, you might want to purchase one on ebay in the future. I know that quite a few of the sellers of parts on there from the us ship internationally, if you keep an eye out for it.
