Hey guys I recently picked up a sweet 84 250r but it feels like it's missing a gear. Pls help is this a 4 speed motor . So I got neutral 1 down and 3 up total of 4 speeds . Is this right. It's pretty fast but I think the sprockets were changed stock is 13/32 but mine is 15/45 tooth now is that a trail set up for faster low end . Pls let me know

See that's the problem I've heared should be alot . Like should be 4 or should be 5 .
Im looking for yes they were all 5 or yes they were all 4 speed . It determines weather I tear the motor apart or not . Or is there any easy way to find out .

You've got a weird way of wording things.

Like Ride Red said, it's supposed to be a 5 speed. What are you questioning?

Yes they were all 5 speed. I believe stock gearing was 13/44 for 81/82 at least. Higher number of teeth on front sprock = more top end, as does a lower number of teeth on the rear sprock. Hope this helps somewhat.
Me and Fabs must have been typing at the same time.

This how it goes when I start it up in neutral shift down for first and the up three times should it be up 4 times . To make I a 5 speed I'm just trying to word it in lamens terms so it's understandable. As the sprocket goes my question is answered for that. If I'm actually missing 5th gear I need to find out why. If got a repair manual on order hopefully that will help me

Sounds like you do in fact have some kind of transmission trouble. Only way to tell would be to dis-assemble it and see what's going on. Could be a bad shift drum, shift fork or worse. When you try for 5th gear does it grind or make any weird noises? Or is it just not there? I hate to say it, but I think you are going to have to dig in to see what's going on..

Ya that what I'm thinking. The thing runs tits . I can throw 4 gears with ease I try or 5th and te shifter dosent even move no noise no grinding nothing just stays in 4th . Well thanks for your help I'm just gonna half to tear it apart

The first thing I'd do is to check to see if it has the shift pattern on the engine case by where the shift shaft goes inside the engine. This will tell you how many gears it's supposed to have. If it's only four, I would guess that you don't have the original engine on your trike. From what I can remember, the CR480 engines only had four gears. that's the first thing that came to mind when I read your first post.

Brushed off a good amount of mud around the shifter and couldn't see and visible depictions of the number of gears. My phones charging currently then I can take some pictures?

I don't think the shift pattern is on the cases but I could be wrong. The 82 cr480 was 4 speed, 83 was 5. Take a picture and post it up

The previous owner swore to me it was only 4 gears.. Anyways, I put boyesen power reeds when I cleaned and put a new seal on the carb. It also got new breakpads and more break fluid after new years.

Well it has a forward kick on it so I'm sure it's the right engine. Have you rode it to confirm what you were told?

That's a 2nd gen motor for sure. So if he can't find gears I'd suggest checking the shift drum/forks/gears like mentioned above.

I could of swore they had the shift pattern by the sprocket cover like the 200x does, the hardtails, etc. I have a 83 250r but never looked lol. I'd get a picture but I'm away for work for a few months.

Thats the right motor for the second gen 250r.81-84 250rs are 5 speed .Your shifter cog could be timed wrong or could be bent or broken shift fork.Only way to be sure is split the cases.

Ive ridden it up to 4th and around in 4th for a little while. When you try to shift into 5th there is just a stop and it wont budge like its backed against something. It rides like it was built without the 5th. I cant believe the owner lied to me about missing the last gear.. so dishonest

I'm not defending anyone, but maybe he bought it that way and thought it only had 4. Then again, you could be right.

I wish, he was the original owner
