hey everyone,
I just started the process of making my 250sx as military as possible. so far i have the frame, plastics, tank, axle, forks, and several other parts painted and am currently fabricating a couple other pieces for the authentic look. I have a nice military jerry can, saddle bags, radio bag, 3 ammo cans and another big bag for it. still looking for a military mirror, blackout light and a way to put on a speedometer. Tomorrow I will upload some progress pictures for anyone intrested in following the project. I know the military never offically used atc's but figured by going this route with my custom restoration i'd have a rather unique atc when im finished. anyone know if i can put nerf bars on this thing? if none are availble ill make some custom ones outta steel tubing.

I don't think any company ever made nerfs for that specific model but I'm sure you could fab something up pretty easily. Post some pics along the way. I wanna see this thing!

Actually, CMP and another company or 2 made brush guards for the 250es/sx back in the day. They look awesome but are hard to find. I bought a set for my SX from a board member, just waiting for them to get here, but when they do, I'll take measurements, etc. I'd like to reproduce a pair for my Big Red. http://www.3wheelerworld.com/showthread.php/139293-Big-Red-brush-guards?highlight=big+red+brush+guard

ive seen alotta the 250sx's turned into military style trikes. im just wonderin, why do that when you can do somethin creative that no one else has done? i dont know how you feel about it, but id rather have somethin unique than try to recreate what someones already done. but thats just me......

Here are a few photos of some of my progress. sorry about the blurry pictures, someone cracked my screen on my camera so I can not tell if its focused or not. I'll be uploading some more pictures soon. M front fender cracked in the center so i either need to fix it or make a custom one.

update
today i found some canvas material in one of my military crates i could use to cover the seat but im still debating weather i want to cover the seat or use some vinyl paint and make it black. im gonna have to rebuild the forks because the suspension is very very stiff...never done forks before but shouldnt be a problem. i also found some nice military number and letter stencils for the id numbers i want to put on it. I might make a little wagon for that machine gun behind the atc that would also lug some extra ammo cans with some dummy rounds. a buddy of mine just dropped of a military issued pick axe, communications radio with antenna, and some other goodies for the look. gonna start welding on the mounts for the jerry can and custom front end if i get to the tractor supply company for some sheet steel in time. I will be clear coating this week after i paint on the star and numbers, ect, ect. anyone have any suggestions for this thing?

thanks, i need to refurbish those mud flaps or what ever you wanna call them on the back plastics. their kinda faded, im gonna have to figure out how to make them have a semi shine, not to flat or shiney. i wanted to paint the rims tonight but i cant get the front axle off for the life of me. gonna have to bust out the old breaker bar if the impact gun doesnt do the trick.

lookin pretty cool, ive never seen anything like it. try fitting a rifle holster to the forks like they used to do with the bikes.

Im going to fit some sort of hard leather bag on the forks for a shotgun. I did some modifying of the rear frame for a jerry can rack, came out nice. cleared the back plastics the other day and just made my template for the star on the gas tank. I still need to pick up a light for it, I'll probably get that within the next two days. I was thinking about the winch but dont think i have a place to mount it. Ill be uploading some more pictures tonight.

Really cool idea. I'd love to drive it in a 4th of July parade. I would reupholster the seat. If you use paint, it will either crack or end up on your butt. Been there, done that-I had a field day w/ the stuff on the interior/top of my CJ7when I was a kid. It only held up on the dashboard and visors. Unless the quality of vinyl paint has improved in the last 15 yrs???

you can mount the winch to the front rack, have heard of several people doing it this way and haven't heard anything bad about it yet. btw, i like the little toy you have sitting behind it in the first pic. not positive, but isn't that a water cooled browning? should make a mount for it if you ever ride it in a parade. :naughty:

unfortunatly I dont have the front rack but i think ill make one. heres some more pictures, theres a few to show the modified rear frame for the gas can holder. The toy in the background is a Schwarzlose MG 07 WWI German MMG. Included some pictures of that aswell.1407491407501407511407521407531407541407551 40756140757140758140759

forgot to mention that i added some extra rack to the back rack :P. I think i might add a bumber on the back, attach it to the sides of the new gas rack. also adding on two plates for reflectors and also need to put on a new tail light.

:DI think the army would've put a snorkel for water crossings . always had them on the jeeps , 6x6 , that gun trailer idea is pretty good ,would def haul extra fuel, ammo ,gear .recover the seat with camo marine vinyl :Bounce:Bounce:Bounce:beer:pics::pics:

I plan on making one that I can attach/detach when needed. I have a nice piece of olive drab canvas for the seat.

I would put the cover on the seat. That will look sweet.

I've been trying to figure out if I should cover the seat with the canvas or get a new black seat cover. In gonna stick with the original head light and put marker lights in the square holes on the sides, I'll have to put out the pieces of plastic that go across horizontally. So many plans for this thing but to lazy to get moving. It's only half cleared and I keep taking the thing out for rides. :P

If you check out steelsoldiers.com you can find a ton of military vehicle related equipment. I built my beast for taking out in the desert or Pismo so I wouldn't wreck the ol family truckster Tahoe (seen in front). It'd be bitchen to mount blackout lights, which you can find for a dime a dozen, and wire them to the low setting on your headlight... just a thought. And judging by the look, I'd go black vinyl for a seat cover. Canvas is great, but it fades and gets brittle with age.

Loving the look. I would forget about the jerrycan since it's a bit overpowering IMO. Not to mention an extra 45lbs situated behind your rear axle might cause a few unintentional wheelies if you ever fill it. An ammo can or a small piece of cam net rolled up would look nice back there. My two cents. Great build, keep us posted.

Here's my Army SX I did last year. Its an 85 chassis with an 86 rear end, ES motor, Maier OD green plastic, Clarke OD green tank, and the cutest 5L Jerry can. I also moved the battery box back and added an aftermarket gas shock on the rear. I even added a backup beeper so people know when I am backing up (thats my favorite part).
I know where you can get a set of of the OD green plastic if you're interested.
BTW, I call it......Section 8
