Hi, I just picked up a 1986 Big Red. I went through the carb, cleaned the gas tank and air cleaner. Put a new battery in it and it started right up! I took it out for a ride and got down the road and it quit. After 5 min I was able to start it again and return home. Every time I get it out it starts right up and get so far then it quits... Any suggestions on what to look for? It just kinda putters out and wont start again and backfires until it will start again.

Any suggestions are helpful.

Thanks142903

if its backfiring, thats often a sign of not getting enough gas...but could also be a electrical problem...bad coil / stator, etc ?

most of the time when that is happening it's a bad coil, the coil heats up and the motor breaks up or quits, I would start there.

Is the vent on the gas cap working properly?

ya, what briano said, ride it and if it quits pull the cap off and see if it starts right up.. i had that problem...

X3 on the gas cap vent!! they are notorious for going bad!! most of the time when it first starts to cut out, pop the cap, and it will rev right back up!! there is an easy fix for this by just drilling a small hole in the underside of the cap! maybe try a search on here to see if you can find a pic of where to drill the hole!

Thanks for the things to try and look for, I will see what I can do about it tomorrow. I would also like to mention that the 3 wheeler is for sale if anyone is interested.

If it is the cap, I just had 2 bad ones on my 70s. I soaked one of them in vinegar for a couple days and it seems to work now, that will eat all of the rust out.
