First of all, the truck we're dealing with- 99 F-350, 2wd, 6-speed, 4 door, 7.3

I had my rear wheels off yesterday to to a wheel rotation and re-paint. It was the first time I had them off the truck since I bought it a year and a couple months ago.

First of all, my parking brake sucks and has since I bought the truck. It's iffy at best and I usually have to park the truck in gear. I've been meaning to address it for some time.

Secondly, I knew my rear brakes were worn and I could tell the fronts were doing a lot more of the work than they should be. I was appalled to see how bad my rear brakes really are. Plenty of meat on the pads, but rotors are smoked.

I just ordered a brand new set of rear rotors and pads, but I'm not sure what to order for the parking brake. I've never had it apart so I don't know how many shoes I need to order. Are these the type with one big "horseshoe" shoe, for a total of two shoes? One on each side? Or is it two shoes each side, like a traditional drum brake setup?

The rotors that are on the truck look like they're going to fight me a bit. Do I need a press to get them on/off?

Should I get new axle seals or is there anything else I should get that I don't already know about?

Sorry for the rush and the barrage of questions, but when I pull it apart it has to get done and go back together ASAP as this is my only non-two wheeled mode of transportation.

Thanks for looking guys!

You can get a repair manual free on-line from autozone. Im looking at the one for your truck now. Seems fairly informative.

Glad to help. The Autozone manuals have saved my cheap butt many times. They are kind of hit or miss though. Guess I can't ask much when they are free :S

Parking brake has 2 shoes per side. The rotors are just a slide on fit and you don't have to pull the axles or anything. Just remove the caliper and hit the rotor from the back with a BFH. I had the same problem on my 03 250 SD, the rear rotors just flaked apart. I replaced all the rotors and pads with EBC drilled and slotted rotors and green stuff pads. Night and day difference in braking.

Was your truck dual rear wheels Todd? I've got somebody telling me I've got to pull my hubs to get the rotors off.

No, it's a SRW but I am fairly certain that the rears are the same and the rotor goes on from the wheel side.

according to my job, those later years, you need to remove the axle shafts and hubs to get to the brake rotors. They have e350 and e450 with a bus body on them. They are drw and not four wheel drive. My 97 drw has rear drums, so I can't speak much about it. My old bosses f150 is very similar to yours, drum brake inside disc brake. drum is parking brake, disc is main stopper.

This is what I keep getting. I posted this same thread on two different Ford truck forums and I keep getting conflicting information.

If its a dually you will have to pull the hub off cause the rotor bolts on from the back and you might as well replace the axle seals when you do it too and with the hub off the ebrakes are easy to do then

The weather is supposed to be decent the rest of the week. Tear it apart today and you'll be fine until like Sunday.

big specht is right. I just consulted with my buddy across the street who maintains a fleet of Super Dutys. Hubs definitely need to come off.

I've got a ride to go on Saturday Deepa. I'll either do it during the week or on Sunday.

Thanks a lot guys!

Those parking brakes never did work correctly all that well on those. buddy has same problem on his.

Looks like Ford recalled them and will fix some of it for free...

Defect: On certain pickup trucks equipped with manual transmissions, failure of the front parking brake cable (http://www.alldatapro.com/alldata/PRO~V268419345~C32815~R0~OD~N/0/70910848/78036491/78036580/78036583/34853741/34861870/34862880/34862927) input button could result in failure of the parking brake system (http://www.alldatapro.com/alldata/PRO~V268419345~C32815~R0~OD~N/0/70910848/78036491/78036580/78036583/34853741/34861870/34862880) to hold the vehicle stationary. This could result in unintended vehicle movement and a vehicle crash.
Remedy: Dealers will replace the front parking brake cable (http://www.alldatapro.com/alldata/PRO~V268419345~C32815~R0~OD~N/0/70910848/78036491/78036580/78036583/34853741/34861870/34862880/34862927) and the controller and verify the performance of the parking brake system (http://www.alldatapro.com/alldata/PRO~V268419345~C32815~R0~OD~N/0/70910848/78036491/78036580/78036583/34853741/34861870/34862880). The manufacturer has reported that owner notification began April 5, 2002. Owners who do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact Ford at 1-866-436-7332.

Also it makes a difference on wheter you have a DANA or Ford axle for your rotor and hub removal.
Either one requires a special hub nut socket for each application. Many times you can use RTV to seal the axle flanges.

All that recall is for is the pedal assembly that would skip when applying ,that is a old recall I haven't done any of those for years
