Carb is clean, idle perfect, runs fine. As soon as it's put in first gear it stalls, unless you give it gas at the same time. Any suggestions?

did you clean your carburetor
if so did you make sure the throttle needle is set in the same place it should be

Possibly a broken primary clutch spring.. The primary clutch (on the crankshaft) on an auto-clutch tranny works just like a chainsaw clutch. If there is a broken spring, it would be trying to engage even when engine RPM's are low... Could be what your problem is.

Not sure what year BR you have... But if the shift pattern is 5 down try pushing the shifter down and holding it down. This should keep the secondary clutch disengaged. When you let the shifter return upward if the engine stalls then the primary clutch is very likely the problem.

If the gear pattern is 5 up, do the opposite. Shift the lever up and hold it up. See if it stays running. Again, if it wants to stall out as you release the shifter back down, primary clutch is the likely culprit.

Thanks for the input. Turns out someone put the clutch together wrong. The friction spring and the flat washer were in the wrong order. Spring wasn't broken. Problem solved, purrs like a kitten.
