Ok, I'm bored and don't have any 3 wheeler stuff to talk about. I know this is a trike site but we do have a quad section. I got this awhile back, for what I consider a good deal. I have spent about $40 on it, just cleaning and front wheel bearings. It has the 87mm JE piston in it at 10.8 to 1 compression, runs fine on pump 93 octane, Hot Cams stage 2 cam, HD valve springs, stock head pipe with a White Bros E series slip on, some P&P work ( I can't verify the the quality of the work ). It has Rental bars, Rath nerf bars, a good looking swingarm gaurd but I don't know the brand, Moose steering damper and One Ind graphics. It had spray can red under black wheels, red seat cover and red tank cover when I got it. All I did to it is changed the color on the seat and tank cover the black ($9 can of vinyl die), set of front hub bearings and seals ($10 off ebay) and a QT of paint stripper on the wheels ($9) and a couple bottles of Awesome degreaser ($1 a bottle at the $ store). Other than it being a 4-4 (4 stroke, 4 wheeler) it's a fun rider. It's nice to be able to turn a key, push a button and ride and to have tons of parts to pick from if I want to upgrade something (over 14000 listings on ebay for "400ex", that doesn't happen with "KXT250", lol).

Gotta love the reliable old 400EX. Is that your front yard? I wish my lawn looked liked that.

Yes, that's my front yard. I was trying to get pictures without anything in them. My place is on top of the hill behind the quad and my shops are on the other side of it. That's the only place on 2 acres I can get pics without anything in the back ground, lol.

What did you end up paying?
I bought mine for $800 but ended up putting about $900 into it. It needed swingarm bearings ( and other minor things )when I bought it. Turns out the swingarm bolt was frozen. Had to cut the swingarm off.... nightmare!

I purchased my first quad a little while back, which is a '99 400EX. I did a lot of clean up to it.

I paid $1,200 for mine, knowing that the rear axle bearing were shot, I bought a set but should have known better as no project I get into, goes as cheap and easy as it sounds........after needing a torch to get the axle nut to even budge, I found the carrier to be completely trashed. (Pic below) I've never seen a carrier this bad. Carrier/bearings, rear rotor hub and caliper bracket later, it's a lot of fun to ride. It is really nice turning the key, push the button and GO! It just doesn't have the character though of the old 3 wheelers.

I have about $1050 in the way it sets. I traded a set of subs and an amp and paid $500 cash.

Dam, that thing is amazing! Did you keep the stock frame and have it gusseted? I see among many other things you replaced the typically weak areas. Swinger, steering stem etc ..what motor work is done to it?

WOW jensenracing77, that one is awesome. I don't know that I would tie up that kind of money in one, even if I had it but I'm sure your riding is much different than mine. I'm having exhaust system made for mine. I have a couple pics of the the muffler so far. It's getting a longer cone but this is about what I've decided on. I should have the finished muffler this week and if I'm lucky, maybe the header too. It will all be polished, header will be mandrel bent and everything will be TIG welded. The muffler pictured is 4" and pretty open but I'm having a 3" made also that will be quieter and have a screen in it. 145027145029

my muffler is also (mostly) home made. more like home modified. on the 400EX you should just use the stock head pipe. if you have no head porting (even if you have minor head porting) there is nothing better than the stock head pipe. right inside the opening of the head pipe you will see a weld all the way around the inside. you should grind that weld off. you may find that you like the 3 inch muffler better. i have much less done to my engine than most people think. if you use the right parts, made by the right people, the 400EX will smoke 450s and will out live the 450 engine 4 times over.

also, that 87mm je piston is one of the best for pump gas. don't get any higher than that on pump gas or you will start having problems. the 400EX has some serious design flaws in the head bolt/stud design but knowing that up front and building around those problems can still give you an incredible engine.

Freestyle grabs under the seat??????????????? Nice bike!

:D good eye. i never used them very much. i needed to cut the holes bigger and the handles bigger. the hole are easy to miss as little as they are.

Did you keep the stock frame and have it gusseted?
stock frame, no gussets. the upper shock mount area on the 04 and older frames should be rewelded but no need for gussets on the 400EX. i cut the back bar off and welded tabs on to be able to remove the back bar but later found that it was a bad idea. i ended up making a back bar out of steal to add rigidity back to the sub frame.
