I recently purchased a 1985 Honda atc 200m (confirmed from a link provided by member, thanks) and trying to get it back in shape. I have never worked on a bike before so please forgive my noobie questions. I got the bike running but it needs a few things.

1. Carb needs cleaning - Opinions on the eBay carbs? It seems like an easier route.

2. When I shift into gear it sounds like something is grinding. I removed the chain cover and the chain and teeth all looked good. It sounds like its coming from the chain area but I'm not sure. It will shift smooth sometimes but if I throttle and then shift it always makes the noise. Any suggestions?

I would like to fix these two issues before I start on the other stuff. Any info will be appreciated.

Just get a carb kit and it will work like new and they are cheap, is the chain a little loose and rubbing on the chain gaurd mine was doing that and an easy adjustment fixes it but it sounded like more of a slapping then a grinding on mine

sounds like its case splitting time :( ebay carbs are okay. try opening up your carb, usually 3 screws and clean it with carb cleaner. you'll learn a lot by just looking in it. usually crud builds up in it ( you'll see it) . buy a climber or other cycle repair book, articles might even be on this site :) chain don't usually make a grinding noise when shifting. shoot some pics or give more description if possible :)

no mine didn't do it when shifting it did it right after when I would start to move of course and he should be able to find a service manual by clicking on the link

I will check out the carb kit. The noise sounds like a loud grinding/popping I guess is the best way to describe it. I included a short video that you can hear the noise.

your link doesn't work but that is a really good idea and you will have your answer soon from someone on here if they hear it

also you might not need a carb kit do what von said and open it up and clean it and it might run like new after that just make sure the jets are clear and you can see light threw them, and if you take it right apart take note how things were and pics wouldn't hurt either

sounds like the chain is jumpin the teeth on the sprocket.take the chain guard off and run it while someone follows you and watches the chain.

Based on your video, sounds like the chain is slipping, or the front sprocket is slipping on the shaft. Somewhere around here you can download the service manual for free...someone should jump on here with the link. In it you will find tons of useful info on how to adjust the clutches and chain. 84-85 200m, 83 200e, and 84-85 200s should all be the same as far as the manuals go. Take your carb off, apart, and soak it in carb cleaner. Then blow out all the ports with compressed air, then put new needles and jets it...also put in a new spark plug...200m's like the NGK brand, I don't know why....

im not all that smart with bikes but are you sure you are letting the throttle all the way out before shifting? a friend of mine had a dirty carb on his bike so he turned up te idle screw to the point where it was always giving his bike about quarter throttle so whenever he shifted it jumped and made a grinding sound.

and by the way it is frowned upon on this sight to show riding without a helmet

Even when powershifting, should definitely not jump teeth............ Chain and sprockets are worn out.

No high and low range. With the help of my neighbor it seems to be running well. Cleaned the carb and tightened the chain. I did not take it out but it didn't make the noise when shifting on the jack. Thanks for all the input and I hope it was only the chain. I'll find out tomorrow. Pic of front sprocket.

It's not just the chain - that sprocket is done. Wow. I bet the rear is just as bad.

Looking at this picture...do we have a "wall of shame" thread on here? I think this should go on it!
