1979 YZ 80 at 14 years of age, $600 bucks, my money earned trapping. No time on mini-bikes, trikes, carts nothing. Talk about baptism by fire. Had to rebuilt it myself in the basement a year later when the rod bearing went.

My first toy was a minibike, tough little thing. Wasn't that fast but it hauled my tail through anything I ran it through.

First 3 wheeler was an 84 200es.

First roadable bike was a '78 XL250s.

First real dirtbike was a '75 Husqvarna 400.

You wanna talk about a change? I didn't ride that XL very much before I sold it, and went straight to the Husqvarna. Me not having much experience with bikes jumping on this TINY(about as small as a modern 80, but alot shorter) 400cc two stroke. I felt like I was riding a rocket that had murder in it's heart.

I hear ya there, I had the DT175 for a short time and then the old man bought a Can-AM Qualifier 400 2-stroke left side kick, he told me and my best friend, dont ride it, then he got to the point were he said, "If you can start it, you can ride it" Bought broke my leg the first day but I got it running and that was the end of it. Stupid Fast, and your quote sums it up very well: "I felt like I was riding a rocket that had murder in it's heart"

My Dad had a 73'Honda 100 that he rode to work, that was my learning experience. My first bike was a 72' Ossa Pioneer, that was new to me in 74'. Quickly I found the limits of the Spanish motor, handling & fiberglass. I swear all you had to do was think about landing from a jump & the fenders would crack. My Dad quickly helped me to secure an RM 250A in order to preserve the "SLOWSSA".

My first three wheeler was a 1983 185s that I got from a farm next to my granparents farm. Poor thing was in bad shape, front fender broken off, rear axle was frozen up, gas tank was rusted out bad, no seat and of corse broken pull start, but ran great after a little cleanup. If ebay was around back then I might still have that one but finding parts wasn't so easy for me so it was quite the frankenstein.

Wow great thread idea, brings back forgotten memories....

in 1974, I was 10, my Granpa gave me what was probably a 20 year old cast iron Briggs and Stratton engine. I found a beat up belt drive mini bike frame/tires and wheels that I gave 5 bucks for. I put the motor on and connected it with a coolor pully and alternator belt. Rigged a throttle with a bycycle grip, duct tape and a bycicle brake cable. I had to push start it as there was not clutch, or brakes. I would ride it till it got so hot it would quit, let it cool down and then go again. I took that old motor apart about once a week and it always ran when I put it back together. The front tire threw the tread off down to the cords so I just wrapped it in duct tape, never went flat.

I think the fact that my Dad and Grandpa let me loose on that thing shaped my whole life. Guess that's why I am on this forum now. I just picked up an 81 ATC70 as a project for my 10 year old grandson. Now I am going to turn him loose on it!

Good times!

Well, My first dirt bike was a 1973 Yamaha RT 360, there is nothing like a screamimg 2-stroke.

Probably around the same time, for the street, I had a 1972 Yamaha R5, 350 cc. Another screamer.

Again around the same time I had an Antique Bike: 1946 Indian Chief

Those were the good days. "On any Sunday" was playing at the movies; every biker should see this flick. And every kid had a motorcycle of some sort. Nobody had a computer to sit in front of; so we just rode, all the time.

Mine was a 1974 Suzuki TM125. That was the predecessor to the RM. That thing was a hill climbing SOB but it had a dredded down pipe on it. I modified it with an RM125 front end and swinger but never could overcome that damn down pipe.

First bike of any kind was a 1972 Kawasaki F7 175. Next purchase was a 1982 ATC200. Still have em both. The Kawasaki needs a piston. The ATC200 still runs. I rebuilt the engine when I was about 16.

Well, my first was a mini bike with a tecumseh motor in it. But my first "real" motorcycle was a '71 Yamaha JT1 Mini-Enduro. Awesome little machine! Moved from that to a '71 Yamaha 90 Enduro, then a '72 Yamaha 100 Enduro, then a '74 Kawasaki 100 Enduro (my first bike purchased "brand new", and the bike I started racing on in the desert at age 15). Next came a '76 Kawasaki KS125, then a '76 Yamaha YZ 125., followed by a sweet '79 Yamaha YZ250 which was my last "race" bike. Started getting into 3-wheelers with a '82 ATC250R, and then bought a '85 ATC250 brand new in August 1984 (one of the first ones in SoCal) that I still own & ride today. Arguably the most technologically advanced 3-wheeler ever mass-produced, so there has been no reason to replace it with anything! :D

Of course I have also owned a couple of street bikes ('82 Yamaha 550 Vision, '88 Honda Hawk GT 650), and of course I currently have a couple of other sand toys as well; '07 Honda TRX400EX for the kids and other people we take out to the dunes, and a '85 Yamaha BW 200 (great fun in the dunes), and my wife also rides a '85 ATC250R.

First bike my brother and I were 11 and 13, had a paper route and got a '79 RM80 for $100. We wonder now why our parents didn't stop such young kids from buying a machine like that haha. Rode that thing to hell and back. Always ran great. Jump to high school, my buddy finds an '84 YZ125 frame with wheels and a big box of parts for $30. So I grabbed that and fixed it while in small engine classes in school. Sold that and got into cars. Now I'm married and getting toys again. Got my '86 TR200 from a guy I work with in March '12, in a similar state to my YZ for $300. Fixed that and went back for an '86 Polaris Scrambler 250R/ES (P3). Here is where I sit now, my next toy was going to be a dirtbike, but now I have been infected. It's time for a 250R :)
