View Full Version : Trikefest haulers

Not sure if anybody else is going to care much at all about this thread, but I've been working my arse off on my truck and trailer to take to Trikefest. I've got so much work to do on my rig I don't have all that much time to put into my trikes. We're getting to crunch time, so it should all fall into place. Trikefest is about a 16 hour drive for me.

Did a lot of modifications to the truck this year. I won't go down the list of things that have already been done but I'll say what I still have to do.

Truck/camper

Replace rear brakes

Add dedicated turn signal and third brake light wiring from the truck to the camper and trailer. I want turn signals on the sides of the camper and trailer because the overall length of the rig is about 44 feet. The lines must be dedicated for just blinkers and third brake lights, otherwise the side blinkers will come on with the brakes and the third brake light will blink with the blinkers.

Change diff fluid

Change hydroboost fluid

Change brake fluid

Trailer-

Rebuild all brakes. Two axles, four brakes.

Fix broken spring

Paint trailer

Change out all lights for LED's and add aforementioned turn signals/third brake light.

Move trailer tongue jack so it doesn't interfere with camper

Add interior lighting

Etc, etc, etc....

looks good! i've been thinking of grabbing a truck camper so i could make some trips. does you truck camper have a bathroom?

My camper has everything but A/C, and I never came across a situation where I would have used it with my first camper that I bought last year. I fell in love with truck campers after I got my first one. This one I super-scored on. This one had about 4k dumped into the interior and I picked it up for 2k! :naughty:

This one has

3 way fridge (brand new). Runs on propane, 12v, or 110 volt

Sleeps 6. The back folds out and becomes another bunk.

Heat

Hot water

Stove and oven (brand new) also with a brand new hood over the stove

New counter tops

Bathroom with crapper, sink, and shower (brand new)

Double kitchen sink

New upholstery and brand new memory foam mattress on the master bunk

Radio with iPod hookup

It's completely self-contained, meaning I can park it wherever I want and do anything I need to. Take a shower, take a dump (before the shower, of course), make a lasagna, rock out (cock out optional), eat ice cream, whatever. Anything electrical runs off of the truck batteries and anything gas runs off of the two propane tanks.

If you've ever considered getting a truck camper, I would highly recommend it. I absolutely love this thing. BigMike here got me into them. I was a tad leery after I got my first one and it was parked in my driveway. I was asking myself what I had gotten myself into. Turns out I got myself into a lot of fun!

Here's a better picture of the camper, although the marker lights have since been changed out for LED's

Ok your truck is nice as hell already, but you went and changed my entire outlook on truck campers lol that thing is king! I want one! I have been wanting to pick up a truck and toy hauler and set the hauler up with bathroom/shower for real camping and showering/ business but this looks like the ticket ! You're welcome Fabio, its payback for getting me into Trikes!!! Gonna need a hell of an extension for that trailer huh? Did you buy that from the "crazy" neighbor? I gotta get Skippy running better before trikefest and make up the extension for my trailer too. We are getting down to crunch time. I gotta get off my arse and get in gear and starting getting things done!!!

fabiodriven
04-26-2012, 05:11 PM
My new extension is 34" Mike. You can have the extension I used with that camper if you think it's strong enough for your trailer. I think it's 18".

Big Mike
04-26-2012, 05:13 PM
I will grab it and see if it will be long enough. Were did you get the 34" extension from?

Now thats the ultimate setup for going riding, racing or just camping.Sweet truck I like the color scheme.Afriend of mine years ago had a trailer like that for gocart racing .He had a shop setup in it.He could rebuild a cart at the races.

This was a pic of our hauler last year. Since, we are alittle different. Back to stock wheels on the truck, with a truck cap on it. Sides on the trailer with LED tail lights. Douglas rims with new tires on my wifes quad, and a slew of new part for my trike.

I just did the rear brakes on the truck last night. Holy hell what a job! I was missing one (yes one) nail that holds the parking brake shoes in place. I had to buy a $100 backing plate kit just for one stupid brake nail! Brakes work fantastic now though!

nice setup Fab. Your truck is a gasser right? You gotta be spending about $700 or so round trip dang

Rob

fabiodriven
04-27-2012, 11:50 AM
Thank you Rob, and aww hellll naaa, my truck ain't no gasser. It's the 7.3 Powerstroke. It's truly an awesome engine. They run for 4-500,000 with no issues if cared for correctly. Best diesel Ford ever made IMO. I had the camper on 2 weeks ago (no trailer though) and was passing cars going UP the mountains in New Hampshire. It cruises with camper and trailer in tow at 80-85mph like nothing. Motor is bone stock with 200k on the clock. Only mods are a 4" straight pipe and a K&N air filter. Still got the factory airbox even.

The TF trip last year cost me about $800 in fuel total. That's round trip. A gasser would've used a lot more fuel and would have been struggling in the mountains. Actually, a gasser would have been struggling on the flats!

All backed by a 6-speed stick I might add. Automatics transmissions are for pansies.

Just went out and snapped these on my lunch break. This is a good approximation of my TF hauler setup (remove a BR and 70, insert P3 and R).
Not bad for a little 6 cylinder rice burner.
Also, check out our new yellow toy we just got here at work (in the background).

Yeah, the 7.3 PSD engines really are some of the best light/medium duty diesels ever built. At my work we still have some old Ford heavy duty f-350 and 250's going back to 97. These trucks have been put through hell, and continue to run great on their original 7.3 PSD. I work for a city, and we have literally junked newer Super Dutys with the garbage 6.0 because of poor quality and zero durability. We have 5 old 7.3's from 97 to 02 still in the fleet. The Triton V10 gasser is another poorly designed engine that seem to develop problems as they get close to 100,000 mi. Up till that point they just spit plugs, and drink fuel like nothing i've ever seen before. Fabio, ya got a sweet rig...

04-29-2012, 01:20 AM
Rear brakes on a dually! NO thanks, I would've gave up after beating on the tire for 10 minutes just tring to get them off. Good thing you did it though. Would've hated to set the parking brake at haspin, go for a ride and come back to your rig and the bottom of a hill.

Made progress in leaps and bounds today! I entered today smelling like sh!t and came out smelling like roses!

TecateDan and I yanked the drums off the trailer brakes today and they were smoked! Nothing left of em! Luckily the guy I bought the trailer from gave me two extra axles that had BRAND NEW brakes on them! We pulled the drums from the new axles and I couldn't believe what I saw! The springs and shoes still had paint on them!

Next thing to do is paint the trailer and get rid of all the factory lights for LED's. :naughty:

I'm going to be hauling a camper with a 18' trailer behind it. Is that legal in Indiana?

I'm confused. Do you mean you're driving an RV that has an 18' trailer behind it or are you towing a camper behind a truck and then you have the 18' trailer tied in to the back of the camper? Don't laugh. I saw guys on the highway last year towing two trailers at the same time. I know for a fact doubles are not legal in Massachusetts.

If it's a camper with an 18' trailer I see no reason why that wouldn't be legal.

RoscoW
05-29-2012, 06:40 PM
With double trailers it is a state by state thing, and I'm pretty sure all will require the lead hitch to carry the whole load. It's fairly common around here to see a truck hauling a fifth wheel camper which is towing a small boat or trailer. Not sure what the license requirements are though.............

All rolled into one. No trailer this year as I have in years past.
I did need to pull a trailer last year because of delivering trikes to folks and that thing was SO in my way the whole time I camped at TF2011.
All I need to do is empty out the scuba gear and load riding + sleeping gear.

The big thing these days is having a DOT number.I know here in Pa.it is big thing. Here I think it is a combination of 10,000.You also have to watch what endorsements you have.Different laws for goosenecks also.Think a lot of other states are cracking down on this stuff.Better be safe than sorry and check it out, fines are hefty.I by no means am a expert on this subject,so don't take my word for it.Just have heard of a lot of fines people have gotten lately.

I'm losing hair over the current truck/trailer/camper buildup that's going on. The clock is ticking now and I currently have a set of airbags installed in the rear of the truck that will not work correctly. (Not my fault)

I took a note from John Swinehart a good many of years ago, with the exception of he has way more room. I picked this gem up for a song and dance. It has a 318 so it pulls better than my 6 cylinder truck, and no tent sleeping ever - has AC, a bed built in and even a TV - which I rarely use.

Just got home from working on my trailer. Added 8 tie downs ( 4 per side ), adjusted the tension on the rear door / gate, tightened up the side door, fixed a pinched brake wire, touch up paint on the rims, found a spare tire ( just in case ). The spare tire is actually the donut tire for my 1990 Town car. LOL Got to get a Battery mounted on the trailer yet, and also make a shelf that can be used for a bed, or ???.

I then had to repair 3 P3 exhaust ( broken studs on the rear ), Have 2 P3's to get finished, and then hammer out a couple 70's that need a refreshing. Plus round up a few parts that just got ordered today. ;)

I am very fortunate that Fabiodriven took me to TF 2012. I never meant to be an ass-hat but I just wanted to get away and forget all the issues I had at home and I guess that was my way. I REALLY NEEDED THIS!!!!!!!!!! And I am sorry John.

I never turned on my phone because if there was an issue, I couldn't fix it from Indiana and it would have ruined my fun.

With the exception of some disagreements, I am still very fortunate I got taken there in basically a hotel. He got this whole setup together just to go and be a bit more comfortable. Johns whole rig was awesome.......

Balls deep in the hauling department now. Steve and I attacked the trailer last week which is in the midst of getting some fabrication and maintenance. The rear crossmember was rotted right off which is the mounting point for the rear door/ramp hinges. We're putting some new metal and hinges on that. We haul very heavy and fast which has taken a toll on the tongue of our trailer. We use heavy load distribution bars which force a certain amount of the load off of the rear axle of the truck and on to the front wheels and the trailer wheels. The system is so effective that it has bent our trailer. We will push the tongue back where it needs to be with Steve's backhoe and then reinforce and gusset everything. Not only that, but the trailer brakes are smoked so four new brakes are going on the trailer.

I put a full day in today working on the truck and camper. We didn't have a mounting system for the camper after having gotten rid of my pickup bed in favor of a better looking and more functional flat bed. The only problem with that was the lack of a system to tether the camper to the body. I tackled that today, so that's good. I also have a tuner for the 'ol 7.3, but we can't run that without a pyrometer in the exhaust, so that got hooked up today as well. I cut out the old trailer/camper wiring harness as it had seen its fair share of miles and was thrashed. I'll be rewiring it starting tomorrow. Remember, we need two harnesses. One for the camper and one for the trailer. I also got a new "dynamic" trailer brake controller that operates with a pendulum type system and applies the brakes as needed rather than the "light switch" type controller I already had. The problem with the light switch style is that it applies the brakes as soon as you touch the pedal, therefor using mostly the trailer brakes to slow down almost 18,000 lbs when decelerating from highway speeds. I'm fairly certain that's how we roached the brakes on the trailer in such a short amount of time. As I was under the truck today working on the camper mounts I noticed a broken leaf spring in the passenger's side rear leaf pack. That will be replaced next week and we'll also be getting six brand new tires next week. This is just a taste of what we're going to be up to as I'm sure I've forgotten some things and there are always last minute surprises. I'll post some pics when everything is done.

RoscoW
05-30-2014, 10:37 PM
That brake controller will be night and day better than the old one, they are sooooooo smooth, you don't even notice them. The next time you tow with a fixed gain model you'll want to rip it out and run it over, herky jerky POS.

Here is my Chatieu for Trikefest and other adventures. It's a 20' Haulmark enclosed trailer with a camper package. It has A/C, toilet, shower, fridge, sink, microwave and an awning. It has 2 bunks that fold up to the wall so you can load. Picked it up over the winter. I've already camped in it twice and it holds a lot of toys! I've had 6 trikes and one 4x4 quad loaded in it. I added a queen size bunk in the back, and with a full size air matress beneath it the camper will sleep 6.

Very nice set-up......That is so what I want and need. This will be my first Trikefest and I will be camping in my tent......Looks like I will be the fool, LOL.

Well, you won't be the only one in a tent... I thought of making my hauler into a camper too... but camping is part of the fun.
All I suggest is that you get a blow up mattress or cot.
Planning your meals is a big thing too... foods that can be dry stored, cans and bottled water is the way to go.
I am trying out a coolertron which I will have to plug in for an hour on my deep cycle batteries or truck and a small bbq.

That's a nice trailer Ditch!

I spent the entire weekend working on my truck and trailer by myself. Still have plenty of work to do this week! This will be the first time my truck camper has been on the flatbed so fingers crossed!

I tent camped for 8 previous Trikefests. I've been in severe storms with heavy winds and rain. I have also been in extremely hot conditions. I guess I have paid my dues lol!

I throw an air mattress down on the floor of the enclosed trailer. After I had to tank down a tent in a thunderstorm with a broken wrist in 2011. I won't pitch another one.

We picked up this trailer real cheap from a local craigslist ad about a month ago. We were told it used to be a regular camping trailer, and then was used for ATVs, etc. We bought it cheap and have re-done the wiring & lights, primed & painted it, all new deck, new tires, sandblasted/primed/painted the wheels, new break-away safety box, new chains, eye-bolts for tie-down straps. We think the trailer is from the 80s.

Basically a whole new trailer for a lot less than you could buy one new, and designed to fit our needs. We have test-fit it and will be bringing 9 trikes on it to TF2014. See you all wednesday evening!
