Well I just picked up a 85 350x, not bad shape but smokes alot. Figured for 350 dollars I couldn't go wrong. Shifts good now to take of the smoking. The motor sounds good with no rattles or clanks, also has good compression. Would the smoking be from valve guide seals? or possibly oil ring? Any help would be appreciated.

Does it smoke more when you give it throttle then on idle? if it does then it is probebly rings but could be both rings and vavles also

Yes it smokes more as I give it gas. Is it possible to buy just ring sets or am I just better off buying a whole piston kit?

that would depend on the cyl wear

You have to take it apart and find out. Could just need a hone and rings, and obviously valve seals.

I recently purchased an 85 350X with the same smoking problem. It ended up having a valve guide cracked along with all 4 valves needing replaced. The cylinder was std bore but within tolerance. Rings were worn out too. I went ahead and ordered a Wiseco 10.25 : 1 piston kit (81.5mm) and am having it bored.

I will tear into it tomorrow. How much does a valve job cost? hoping to get it together soon.

I got all 4 valves for $55 including shipping and the guide was $11.00. The valve stem seals are around $20 for all 4, and I am guessing that the machine work will be around $50. I have gotten everything in but the valve stem seals, and they are supposed to be in tomorrow. Then I will take the parts to the machine shop, and hopefully have it going within a couple weeks.

THANX!! I got the new valves off of ebay, and the valve guide from powersportsplus. I ordered the Wiseco piston kit from Amazon (part # PK1016) which does not include the valve stem seals. I just surfed the web to find the best prices and shipping cost.

How bad does it smoke?

My 350X smokes enough to make the two-stroke guys not want to follow me. However, my dad and I thrashed it all over Little Sahara last week with no issue.

I figure, I'll ride it 6 times a year max. I'll just keep checking the oil rather than tear it apart and spend the $$ for a rebuild.

I tore it down today, cylinder is stock and no grooves. What im worried about is the cam journal which are slightly scored. Should i get the journals fixed or will they be fine considering how well the 3 wheeler ran besides smoking? I can upload pics if ya guys wanna see the journals.

Could you post some pictures of the journals?

Ya i will go take them now. The only ring set I can find on ebay is .25mm over. Do you know where to get stock rings?

Not sure if your familiar with seafoam you could try that? Seafoam is a multiple purpose engine cleaner. You can add it to your gas tank to help clean your entire gas line. (clean your gas, remove water from gas, clean particulates off your fuel tank, clean your injectors/carbeurator) You can also add it to your engine oil as a motor flush (add to oil, run for 10-15 minutes, then do an oil change) to help get rid of extra muck and carbon build up. I used that for my 350x that smoked alot and it worked great! !

I'd recommend getting oem rings from servicehonda or your local dealer.

That first pic doesn't look good to me. Might need some machining. Is the oil galley plugged or something? The second one is a little blurry. I'd wait for more opinions since I don't have experience with the 350.

Not Real Sure The Decompression Cable Is Broke Though, The Cam Doesnt Shake Around So I Dont See What It Would Hurt?

Well i will see what heads I can find. Thanks guys on the input. It is weird how well it ran with the scored journals.
