Howdy all,

I recently acquired a 1984 ATC 200S, for free! I have a few questions to start and am sure many more will follow. All 3 tires are shot & I just won a front tire with rim on ebay ($5.50+25 to ship) & need 2 rear tires. Was looking at a few different brands, looking for something that will work in both the mud & hard pack dirt of New Mexico. Here are a couple of links to some I am interested in - maybe some of you have tried or use 'em:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/2-22X11X8-22-X-11-X-8-Honda-ATC250SX-ATC-250SX-Tires-/360363727475?hash=item53e75a1a73&item=360363727475&pt=Motors_ATV_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr

Here are a few photos of my new trike! I have been wanting one for many years, had a 185 back in the day...

It had been sitting for about 2 years with about 1/4 tank of old gas in it. After about 20 pulls & messing with the choke it fired up. It runs very strong, looks like it was hardly used minus the trashed tires. I am at least able to ride it for about 3-5 minutes till the front tire is too soft to ride

The previous owner said his friend gave it to him but only after swapping out the near new tires on it for a friend & replacing them with these you see :(.... If anyone has a pair of rear tires they are looking to get rid of please let me know! I am also looking for front & rear racks.

What other wheels will fit on a 200S? There are so many sub models but I am not sure what bolt patterns will work on others.

Thanks for any help!
By the way I did search thru a lot of the threads & yes they have been helpful!

Thanks! Always happy with free (duh who isn't!) & I seem to have some luck as I got a free 1984 Fourtrax TRX250 back in January, another minty, perfect plastic bike.... That one just needs to be put back together. Here's a couple pics, first photos - as it was found, in a building under years of bird crap & tons of dirt!

As far as tires I need something that will get me around, we live in a very remote area with nothing but dirt & rocky terrain. The mud here is unbelievable when the monsoon's show up not to mention the trails & roads in the winter snows... I want to ride it so I am going to find a beefier tire for it. I am leaning towards the Mud Lites and am ready to buy but just not sure...

I didn't realize the fender needed to be drilled, not happening if that is the case. The front rack just bolts on?
I have seen some OHTSU tires on ebay, damn they are expensive! I need a mud/dirt tire...Being 2wd it will be a challenge around here.

Thanks all for the input!

What is the word on the 2 piece rims? I didn't realize I had them on my trike... I got the used front & tire wheel I ordered & am wondering what I have to do if anything to be sure the bead seats & the tire does not leak. I am guessing the rears are 2 piece also?

Always liked the styling of the 200S, great example. Couple buddies of mine had the older 185S versions, fun, lightweight trikes like the 200S, nice!

Thanks! I agree with you, I like the looks also, cannot wait to ride it...

Well I FINALLY got my pair of new OHTSU rear tires, only 18 days after I ordered them!

I was in the process of cancelling the order this morning with Beatrice Cycles to get my funds back & the tries showed up. I had emailed them since the 25th as the manual I ordered was delivered then & the tires had the same tracking number but no tires came, I was thinking they were lost. They never answered any of my many emails. Nor did they give me the updated tracking number when they finally decided to ship 'em 11 days after I bought them.

Anyway, felt like venting, they potentially ruined a good business relationship with me over this even tho it has never happened before. It should never happen.

OK, Beatrice Cycles just redeemed themselves by contacting me, apologizing & made an offer to help with their mistakes... They will continue to have my business! That is the way businesses are supposed to treat regular customers. Thanks Jack!

Yea no kidding, didn't respond once untill I told him (after I finally got the tires) again what happened & that maybe in the future they should change their ways & communicate a bit better. Seemed to have stirred something up! LOL

Nice trike for n even better price!

Thanks! I finally got the tires mounted, installed last nite & went riding! This thing is incredibly solid, not a single rattle & everything feels new. The OHTSU tires are fantastic, tons of grip. I am loving it but not as much as my 3 year old daughter. She woke up this morning & walked up to me & did the hand movement of pull starting the ATC! Hilarious, she wants nothing more than to go & go FAST!

The only issue I have found is the headlight is not nearly bright enough & it is backfiring when letting off the throttle. Any ideas on either as far as solutions? The exhaust looks new so no holes....

Here are a few photos.

Could it be running too lean as far as the cause of the backfiring?

How would I go about adding maybe a pair of extra lights? How do I wire it & what would be a good light to use?

bslama69
08-05-2012, 01:59 PM
Gonna be tough to add lights because the stock stator does not put out enough power for anything more than the 45w bulb that you have in there. I checked RM Stator and they don't offer a pumped up coil for the Honda 200 engines. Ricky Stator has one for the 200X but it may work for your 200s. Those engines were very similar. Call them and ask if their 75w 200x stator will work for your bike. Price is reasonable at $40.

Thanks Much bslama69, I will contact them to see. This is perfect if it works! We live in remote NM and it gets so dark here for most of the year & even with some moonshine last night it is just to hard to see well enough to ride with any speed.... I even considered the LED mountain bike light sets.

Huh, just found these 6 & 10 light LED headlights... Expensive but do not require a different stator or rewire...

Always full of questions... Any suggestions on a simple way to lock this bike up when not in use? I hate having to leave it when I am out of town without a lock, too easy to steal - not that we have any crime but still... Am looking for something that will not damage it like a chain might & will fit in the storage compartment in the back.... Any ideas?

I have to admit I AM ADDICTED to these old Hondas! :Bounce

This is an absolute blast to ride & I am amazed at how quick & fast this thing really is....Anyone know the average top speed of the 200s?

Nice but spend some money and get some great tires and enjoy it more and get stuck less.

Backfiring... Check the spark plug to see if she is running right mix wise. Couldn't tell in the picture but does your muffler have the spark arrestor still? Most of them seem to have lost them with age, if it does have it pull it out and clean it and then start it up without the arrestor and rev it up a few times and blow the carbon and crap out of the muffler. I would also check the valve adjustments as well.

Very clean looking trike, i would have paid good money for that!

Oh for the headlights... They aren't very bright, i added a couple 27w LED lights to mine in place of the high beam, makes a huge difference and only draws as much as the high beam element in the stock bulb used to, no need for electrical upgrade!
