do i have to take off the slotted nut on the axle to get to the brake shoes to replace them?

yes, you have to take off the slotted nut to remove the brake drum. then you can replace the brake shoes.
You can go to the yamaha website and look at microfiches there for more information.
BTW I use the EBC shoes Y518G (G=grooved) or Y518 on all my Zingers, they work really good.

Is there a trick to getting that slotted nut off , I could not get it to budge

slotted nut? is it nut shaped or is it the round one with the notches in it that you need a special wrench for? if so, I used a hammer and a punch on the one on my YTM 225 that holds the axle in... and a lot of spray lube..

its the round one with notches it holds the brake drum on ..... is it reverse threads
