The factory auto cam chain tensioners will kill a timing chain pretty quick ( too much spring tension ) I recommend a manual tensioner . Very well designed motor IMO other wise .

Jeff:

X2 on cam chain issues.

I own 2 of them now, both 2003 models. One has a Wiseco 440 kit in it.

Another issue with the early years is the front end where the upper shock mounts are. The frame there is prone to cracking if the quad sees air frequently. My 440 I bought recently has been welded there. Easily fixxed with a competent welder. Newer models ('05 and newer I think) had changes made that addressed that weak point on the older ones. I'm still learning on these quads but overall I like them quite a bit.

Other than that just look for the usual stuff....

I love my Z's for when I don't need to hop on the 350r and set my hair on fire. Good power, speed, and handling with the added bonus of e-start and reverse. Nice quads they are.....

I recently joined this site to learn more about the Z400. http://www.suzukicentral.com/forums/
Pretty descent group there. It won't take you long to figure out who I am over there! ;) I am not ashamed of my old school roots.
