View Full Version : '84 200X. Time to rebuild

After seeing this 200X being hoarded at the dealer,

http://i708.photobucket.com/albums/ww84/96RedCav/IMG-20120804-WA0001.jpg

My search began the following Tuesday. Picked this up on Thursday. $450, '84 200X, runs & drives perfect. Zero smoke, needs very little. Already have spacers and a new adjustable pull front brake lever/mc being shipped in. Still need 20" rears, new clutch lever (just for symmetry, original works fine), maybe a 14t front, we will see how it feels with 20's. New handle bars (originals fine also), carrier bearings, and all new plastic and seat. Maybe extended shrouds also. I took it to the trails on Saturday to see how I like it. And I must say, this is my new favorite trail machine! Great overall, now its time to freshen it up.

Nice pix.

Thanks for the mini vacation.
You should be able to access the classifieds.

I'm not good at ebay but lately I've been getting parts trikes for the prices of
the parts I'm looking for.

Well, up until the last few months.
Trikes seem to be going up in price.

I wonder if there's a new movie that re made them popular again.

Got more done. My adjustable brake lever and mc came, new bars & grips, 200X desert hi flite, and 6 pack rack. Just need to clean it more and get a few more parts. Have an msr aof clutch lever, DG RCM alloy exhaust, some rear tires, super scoops, and some newer rear plastic coming. Then we will see what else needs to be done :) Maintenance items include oil change, rear axle bearings and seals, carb cleaning, and other things. Some may think it looks weird, but that's fine :) I like it.

Nice trike. Ive got a real similar 200x thats been around the farm for years. Where do you get your parts from?

My Pa traded some work on a guys windrower for a rebuild on it. Runs damn good and drives nice. Only problem I have with it is the rear spring is old and gettin weak from having me (260 lbs) riding around on it. It bottoms out when coming down of a jump and just sits real low when Im on it. Do any of you know where I can get a heavier duty spring for it? Or do they even do that?

Take a look at my build thread. I just got a heavy duty spring for mine. Also, take a look at the link below, it is a stock shock with the progressive baja spring on it (you can tell because the spring is even at both ends and is not wound tight at the top). I bought one just like this and just used the spring.

Ebay link to 200x Baja spring: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1985-Honda-ATC-200X-Rear-Shock-/320987439540?pt=Motors_ATV_Parts_Accessories&hash=item4abc57a1b4&vxp=mtr

I find alot of my parts online, Craigslist, ebay, forums. I still need ALOT more to be complete, but its all in the search!

Never knew that about the rear springs, but I believe you have your spring definitions backwards..An even wound spring (Like the baja one posted) will be a linear rate.

You are correct in your spring terminology, however, I was referring to the "Progressive" spring manufacturing company. Yes its a linear spring and was manufactured by Progressive and after much research found out it was entitled the "Baja". :)

Take a look at them online, link below. Progressive doesn't make the "Baja" spring anymore, but they still make the progressive front springs for the 83-85 200x.

Looking good. Is there any way you can get a close up of your front brake lever and MC? I was thinking of doing the same deal with a remote MC as mine is about shot. Looks like its going to fall apart if I take the cover off of it. lol

Also, what lever did you use?

M.Pargiello
12-30-2012, 07:14 PM
It was some cheapie from ebay. It is gone in the most recent pictures because it was junk. I got a standard mx mc coming. It was always soft and leaked a little so I tossed it.

160420

One of the CDI cover screws snapped off while removing it. Fun fun.... No biggie. If I can't get it out I will just replace the plate. Other than that, it is coming apart easily for it's age.

Didn't get the frame powder coated, but I don't care. If it was going to be fully restored I would, but it's a rider so I left it as is and just did the engine. Got one picture of it on the stand in the shop and a quick clip of it idling today. Going tomorrow to get the carb set. It bogs a little in the last 1/4 of throttle, shouldn't be hard to fix. Also have my jeswinehart number plate on now too :)

Messed with the carb today, took it to a local shop run by a friend (same guy who did my port job) ended up with a 125 main jet and the top end bog is gone :) Feels quite a bit more powerful than before, still needs fine tuning to be 100%

M.Pargiello
01-22-2013, 12:34 AM
Ok, now that I am thinking about it, I can assume that I will be better off running the XR200 carb and jetting that accordingly? Velocity may drop a bit in the bottom end but once the engine is spinning this won't be an issue. Along with a lightened flywheel and XR200 piston this should squeeze a bit more out from what I understand. Not looking to build a crazy racer, just a snappy trail machine that will keep up on the track. Thanks for any input!

Hey Mike, go to my profile page and in my albums sections there is an article on what carb and manifold to use for that XR200 swap. All the information you need to know is there besides the jetting. That should get you pointed in the right direction.

Thanks for the info! I will definitely be doing all the little things that I can while keeping it reliable and fun to rip on. I plan on running it in mx this year at TF so as long as I can keep up and manage a decent position, I'll be happy

here is a quick pic after ripping in the snow earlier :) and some of the damage I found that made me rebuild the engine. Spotted this while adjusting the valves so I stopped right there and pulled the engine. Im glad I did because now it is better than ever
161612

Long story short, I found my rocker adjustment stud and lock nut sitting in the top end. The bike had some clickity clack so I went to adjust it and found that. Not good, but all is well now and it runs strong :)

Nice looking trike Mike! Hey what are those boots on the forks? Where the rubber boots normally are.

M.Pargiello
01-23-2013, 01:52 AM
Thanks, they are a set of Pro Line seal covers. They are pretty fun to wrestle on, but they keep dirt off the seals and wipe the tubes when they compress. Worth every bit of the $5 they cost. I just got sick of one of my boots being ripped and didn't want to replace them with more boots. I did buy a set of boots for the TR200 when I rebuilt it and I love those as well

CodyRosa
01-23-2013, 02:44 AM
When you get the chance could you maybe send the link to find them? With both my wheelers I got them with nice boots with no tears.. first week and they get tears. lol how that's possible is beyond me. Do they come in other colors than black?
Thanks

I will see if I can find it. My dad took it out one weekend when I first got it. Somehow he ended up on his side with a small tree on the forks between the fender and tire. Split one of the perfect boots :( still don't know how he managed that

Quick question for ya Mike. Since you ride our beautiful Michigan trails are you going to figure out how to get a spark arrester on the RCM? Only reason I'm asking is because I have the RCM exhaust on my quad and am still searching for a USFS approved screen that fits nicely.

M.Pargiello
01-29-2013, 09:41 PM
That is in the works :)

I will definitely post up what one fits when I find it. Shouldn't be hard, I need to watch out for sound levels mainly. There are some loud ass quads where I ride, but this already draws attention just being an ATC :) DNR hasn't poked around it too much yet

M.Pargiello
02-22-2013, 10:48 PM
I do almost all my own work, even machine work. I took the head from my 200X to a good friend who runs a small shop simply because I trust his work, haven't had anything done by him before, and it freed up some time on my end for the rest of the build. I have ridden many bikes he has built and can vouch for it, as well as many from local mx tracks. I have done my own port work in the past on other machines and my own project cars. If you want you can contact me and I can set you up with Dave who runs ASR in Grandville. Small hole in the wall place, so no website or anything. Great guy and quality work. If you are just looking to rebuild and don't feel comfortable doing it, you can bring it to me and I will do it no problem. Just get the parts and drop it all off at my shop.

Wow, long time no update. Not sure really what's been done since February on the 200X. Mainly been focused on riding and the building 250R's.

Well, here is a picture from getting the solid rear link and tubes dropped to check the setup for ice.

175813

And no pictures until I get back to the shop but the +4 swinger is done :) I know some of you might have comments on the length vs. power, I like hillclimbing, I don't like rolling backwards onto my bars, controls and plastics. It would cost me a lot of money if I tried shooting every hill I see since you can only ride so far forward on the tank. I had to stop in this picture. Front kept coming up, can't keep hitting the clutch either. Lose too much speed.

175817

Ill be back, hill. You just wait.

Hill climbing with the 200x can be frustrating. The lack of torque can leave you hanging out like your one picture. I've had many hills where i've had to walk the bike back down due to just not enough power. I went down 1 tooth on the front sprocket and it did help a little. A +4 swing arm would definately help you out. The trike is looking great btw.

Looking great man, I just got a 200x from my uncle for helping him build a small shed. Didn't expect anything for helping family, but the 200x was a nice bonus! Not sure if its and '84 '85' or '86, how do you tell? is there a spot on the trike that says a year? Thanks! Keep up the great work!

M.Pargiello
08-22-2013, 12:41 AM
Look right behind the headlight, there should be a tag. If not, easiest way is this

83-tubular swing arm, black seat, etc..
84-box swing arm, black sent, etc...
85-blue seat, bare forks, blue boots, red white and blue tank decals, etc..

Theres other small differences, but this should give you the year providing it is still original

Yeah, you really have to pull it up to wheelie now. I'm sure I will adjust, im just used to the stock one

Trike has been running great. Small changes here and there, but nothing worth documenting really. Ride it alot, and have had it out with some members from time to time.

Had a mishap a month or so ago, Damn strap broke and it fell out of the truck. Bent and twisted the rear upper section of the frame and my grab bar, and nothing else. Not even any scratches. Thankfully I have another good frame and that allows me to go through it for the 3rd time. Go me.

Hey Mike, I see the powroll sticker, anything specifically from them on the bike? I love that place with all my heart (and cash!) lol
