Compressor for blasting

I am running 220 out to the garage tomorrow so I can upgrade my compressor to do my own sandblasting. I have the larger HF blasting booth and plan on building a bigger one that will fit frames and such. Been reading on some of the other forums but getting alot of mixed info on what size compressor I need. What are you guys running that works?

80 gal 2 stage is the way to go!! sand blasting uses a huge volume of air!! a 60 would work, just dont get one of the single stage oiless jobbers!

u use a ingersol rand p185 tow behind compressor for my sandblasting work, its diesel powered john deere 4045 engine and is capable of 200cfm if high pressure is not used.

Yeah not going for a oiless, I am using the compresser at work right now to run the blaster and its a big 80gal 2stage. It does a great job but seams a lil overkill. It keeps up running the booth and 2 palm nailer with no prob. I was looking a a sanborn 60gal and the 80gal both single stage.

yep you need a big one, I say at minimum 10-15 cfm, 20-30 would be better, actually I have no personal experience, but I'm also on the hunt for a compressor for sand blasting. I'm looking for an old beast on craigslist. When I find one it will have at least a 5HP motor and be 2 stage. I'm planning to spend $300-$500 depending on condition.

I been looking on craigslist for a 2 stage but not much luck yet. The 60gal that I am looking at is rated 3.7 hp but only 15amp motor and I didnt think you could get much more than 3hp with 15amps. Its right around 500$ and the 80gal is 5.7hp 23amps and I think it was rated 16 cfm @90psi and around 800$ both single stage. All but the HF 2stages are pushing 1000$ mark. I really dont want to have to spend that much but also dont want to get something thats not going to do what I need it to. Anybody had much luck blasting with a single stage?

find a pair of cpmpressor heads in the junk yard and a 20-30 gal tanka nd put them in tandem on each side of a electric motor with double pullet, its how we had one and was pushing about 30cfm on a 1/2 horse motor it was ugly but it worked for years and built up abotu 90 psi in about 30 seconds. and maintained it very well.

I played for years with the 5HP oil less compressors and blew up 2 of them.

Then I got off my wallet and spent the 1000$ for a large dual cast iron oiled vertical compressor.

Glad I did!!!!!

I have the sandborn 60 gallon and it’s been working great for me but I only have a small sandblasting cabinet. I would recommend the 80 if you have the space for it, you won’t regret going bigger.

i have a sanborn 60 gallon its running all the time when blasting with the cabinet

If it's the right size, it shouldn't "run all the time"; It should cycle on and off.

And the hotter it gets, the more condensation gets into the line. I'm willing to bet that if you run the cabinet for awhile, you can pop on an air nozzle and see the moisture in the line.

Going to go with a 80gal 5hp. Still going back and forth on the single vs dual stage. there both instock and i plan on having one of them in my garage come tuesday. the only thing keeping my from the 2stage is the extra 400$ its going to run me, but i might have to do what DC said and "get off my wallet" lol. I was hoping to have all this done by now but i messed around and caught the flu so i been down for a week now. Thanks for all the info and i will let ya know how it turns out.

The rotary screw compressors we had back in the days at work when I was an industrial mechanic were about 20K and you NEVER ran out of air :lol:
