Spark plugs

does it really make a difference which number plug we use as long as it is the same thread and length on a 4 stroke ? ive heard alot about a too hot plug but was thinking the plugs all get the same spark from the coil so ???

i have used random plugs in a pinch to get out of the woods but for the love of god they use a specific plug for a reason.
